- Most people have heard that "wool keeps you warm even when it's wet". So, a few of us dunked ourselves in cold winter water to see if wet wool really would keep us warm. It did. When we posted these "dunk" videos, and cited some research that wool actually generates heat when water is added, there was some disbelief. And really, the idea of a wet fabric getting warmer does seem to run counter to common sense. But Albert Einstein, who famously turned common sense inside out, observed that "common sense is actually nothing more than a deposit of prejudices laid down in the mind prior to the age of eighteen."
So ... this is a crude kitchen-table experiment. Maybe we'll refine it, but the idea here was to demonstrate in a simple way -- that anyone can duplicate -- that wool plus water actually does generate heat. This is very important for All-Purpose Outerwear!!
One thing I did not think of until watching this video ... The “control” thermometer - the one we placed inside the wool that was NOT spritzed with water - also provided some proof that “wool plus water = heat”. When the control thermometer was wrapped in wool, the humidity went down … meaning the wool dried the air somewhat … and THAT’S WHY the control thermometer also warmed up.

I expect if we'd been wearing wool every day our whole lives, we'd take this for granted, and we would think the " opposite" behavior of cotton (or synthetics) was amazing. It's a little bit funny to imagine (I'm just making this up) some people from Northern Scotland, a thousand years ago, experimenting with cotton garments and being astonished that the stuff is nice when it's dry but get it wet and it'll kill you!! -- Ralph
What socks were you wearing when you dunked? And gloves? Have you tried Buffalo Wool Co for socks and gloves? Or Hollow? I've experienced the warming effects of wool (socks) when my foot went through thinner ice on a 0 degree (fahrenheit) day with a good midweight Merino sock. Also, would love to see this testing with other brands of wool!

Excellent to see this backing you're claims. I never doubted for a second. But I understand why ppl are hesitant to believe it. Extremely underated, this rambouillet wool. And this craftsmanship. I think everyone will forget their doubts about it.
Searching on the web for info about wool generating heat turned up some real scientific work, but it was all old. Seemed like nobody had looked at this for a long time. Hopefully and probably I'm wrong about that. It seems like the wool trade organizations ought to have some good material on this. Thank You for the encouraging words! -- Ralph
Hello Ralph Nice test those sheep seem to have the secret I think I've had your coat for about 4 years now best coat I've ever had works out very cheap plus I have instructed my son I will be buried in it just incase its cold and wet down there. Great product Ralph 👍

Il y a un phénomène météorologique qui se nomme "Effet de Fœhn" et qui consiste au blocage d'une masse d'air contre une montagne, conduite par des vents pouvant être violents. Ce contact avec un versant oblige l'air à se refroidir et se charger d'humidité. Au-delà des crêtes, la masse d'air se réchauffe rapidement et s'assèche. Y a-t-il un rapport ? La laine jouerait-elle le rôle du versant de la montagne ?

I have a lot more realistic experiment that proves that wool DOES NOT keep you warm when wet. So the experiment is as follows: Take two identical bottles with warm water (does not have to be boiling water). Put one of the bottles inside wet wool sock, hat or what ever. Leave the other bottle just as it is. Measure the temperature inside of both bottles after certain amount of time (like 15 mins, 20 mins, 30 mins, 1 hour, etc..) You will find that the bottle with the wet wool will get colder more quickly than the bottle without any wool.

Would be interesting to see the results. But I've experienced what felt like the warming effects of wool when I accidentally broke through ice. I haven't done any controlled tests, but at the very least wool insulates well when wet as I have experienced. Granted, depending upon the conditions, wool doesn't have any body heat to retain. FWIW

I think the water dunk in the previous video was not long enough to saturate the wool with water, which would dramatically alter your experience
Yeah, I wish I had stayed in longer. I did have water run inside the garment from the neck line to it did get wet on both inside and outside. I'll try to do it longer this winter:) - Cody
