Normally I don't take joy in watching people fall, but them continuously falling graciously over one another for almost four minutes straight did bring a smile to my face. That was some funny stuff! :P
First of all anyone who ski 90 kilometres in one day can't be called an amateur. Now the reason people fall: 1. Realy icy tracks 2012 2. Age span from 18 to 87. Old people have worse balance. 3. If one falls everyone falls. 4. People have went over 30km at this point and may be tired.
Cause = Age * Speed * Icy snow * Fatigue * Skill level * Congestion. Age: Older people have longer reaction time, poorer balance and agility. Speed: It requires better reflexes to dodge fallen skiiers when speed is high. Most people get afraid when speed gets too high. Icy snow: Old hard snow. Fatigue: Many people begin to get tired after skiing for 30km. Skill level: Experienced skiiers are more confident downhill and better at slalom. Congestion: Too many people to close.
Could be. But I know that this time of year the weather in Sweden nowadays are really different day by day. One day the snow is melting, but during the night the melting snow which is much water turns into ice and therefore you get a really icy surface which gives you amazing speed when you're going downhill.
Realizing I'm answering an old question, but for what it's worth, here's my guess: the first thing is, the hill is groomed, with tracks, and despite the fact it's a gentle hill (maybe gentle enough to groom), you have one person stop or fall and it's hard to avoid because you need to jump the tracks. Secondly, judging by the icicle-beards, I'm gathering this is some distance into the race where folks are tired. Thirdly, (going back to the icicle-beards), snow conditions are such that even with that gentle hill, folks are going fast. Fourthly, it looks like the skiers are coming around a curve so can't see too far ahead, fifthly, despite it being a gentle hill at that point, they are coming from a steeper hill so going at good speed, maybe 30km/hr (?) and finally, as someone else pointed out, maybe there are some newer skiers that aren't as familiar with maneuvering. At the American Birkebeiner, which has some serious hills, you'll definitely see who is practiced at going down the hill, and who isn't. But IMO, they should not be putting tracks here, for starters.
Yep, they're carrying serious speed! Reminds me of the "bobblehead hill" hill at the American Birkie. Sharp downhill right hander! Great for spectating.
More icy than usual and cross country skis are not good going downhill. A lot of participants do it with only one to several weeks skiing prior. The pros don't trip, but loads doing Vasaloppet are not pros. I did it 6 times and I never had the opportunity to ski more than a week prior. My physical form comes from doing other things. IIRC I participated in that year without tripping.
Dane here. When I participated it was the Norwegian and Swedish amateurs falling downhill. One time I had to wait 15 minutes in an queue before going down an easy hill some kms before Risberg. Completed the race 6 times.
1 falls down -> others start to slow down -> people behind them wont notice that early enough = crashes. besides have u ever tried skiing? those skiis are pretty narrow^^
Skating technique is better than classic for about a hundred different reasons, one being you can control the descends because you have more techniques not just playing a a train on rails.
During the Classical Vasaloppet run you aren't allowed to skate. It ruins the tracks and takes up too much space. With 15.000 participants there is no room for that.
Someone should've warned them to slow down at the top of the hill. Many were coming down way too fast and had no chance to stop when they saw people laying down all over the place.
Jo.
I think there is a really heavy downslope right before this area that you can't see in the video. So they have really high speed, and maybe the tracks aren't that good, and if one falls, there is this chain reaction because it can be hard to avoid people.
The once that fall the most are those who have the most expensive fancy Oakley glasses. Bet they splashed out on world cup level skis as well, trying desperately to compensate for lack of skills.
Let's be honest - xc skis suck on downhills. I still love xc skiing. And no, if you can do a half decent parallel swing after 5 years of training that doesn't refute the statement above.

This will be my new youtube addiction during 2024.
I was explicitly looking for a nice cross country pileup.
Thank you, I am laughing tears!

Mardurenn and 5) you lose your balance when you laugh .

I guess skill level should be inverted😅
0:55 Bowling Strike!
True. They should try mass starts also in alpine skiing, that would be badass :oD
The crash at about 2:20 looks authentic.

Fanny... . A simple question: why do many people fall exactly in that point?

2012 was a good year........
can someone please tell me why they are falling? Haven't they trained for this for like months beforehand?

Is this a drunken skier race?
I think it might be😂
X-games 2014?
Why straight legs ??
bästa jag sett
Danish people trying to ski?
Yes and no.
Dane here.

Naa... Stockholmare..
Where do they come from? Did they put all Sweden on skis?
1 falls down -> others start to slow down -> people behind them wont notice that early enough = crashes. besides have u ever tried skiing? those skiis are pretty narrow^^
Tror att folk måste börja träna utförsåkning. :)
That looks like a battlefield in war. Now those people know how the allied felt at Normandy.
I did not know cross-country skiing is a contact sport!
Totally agree with Mynnigon. Have normally problems watching other people fail, but this was funny... 👍😂😂😂

Why do people always fall down at this exact place in the middle of such a long race? What's so singular about Risberg?
Hur många dog
underbart före det året
So many amateurs or was there ice on the track? Or can someone explain why they are falling so much...
Fréderic Louis icy track in that spot

do they not know how to slow down
Gannabis?
Why isn't the Benny Hill theme song dubbed as the soundtrack? Clearly it is the only soundtrack that will work!
2:50 Gustav I of Sweden came to ski as well
🤣
3:03 favorite crash - watch how he breaks with his head x)
Back in Nam it was like this also
That 16058 guy solved it perfectly 1:12
2:03 even managed quite a nice Telemark before going down lol
Why don't they just go in the tracks? Clearly the people doing so don't fall over.
Someone should've warned them to slow down at the top of the hill. Many were coming down way too fast and had no chance to stop when they saw people laying down all over the place.

hahahaha UUUUUR SPÅÅÅÅÅÅÅR FÖR I HEEELVETEEE!!!
Oh, Bravo!

Why they skiing if they don't know how to control theirs skies?
Haha, där skulle jag se på loppet. I en solstol med en kall bärs. Underhållning på hög nivå.
Brilliant!!!

It's just your typical Swedes skiing, hurrdurr.
The once that fall the most are those who have the most expensive fancy Oakley glasses. Bet they splashed out on world cup level skis as well, trying desperately to compensate for lack of skills.
Faller en falleralla.
