In this video, I share the best tips from my experience planting fig trees. The best times to plant vary based on climate, but fall or spring, offer mild conditions to make your tree's new transition easier. I've found that using larger containers, particularly two or three-gallon sizes, offers the best growth results. One of the most important things is to ensure the tree's continuous growth and health before transplanting. It's essential to avoid transplant shock and take utmost care not to damage the roots. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of mulching for soil health, retaining moisture, and ensuring the tree's establishment. I've also noticed that having too many fruits on young trees can be counterproductive, and there's great value in diversifying the crops you grow.
Watering is another key aspect. I've pinpointed a specific daily water range that seems ideal for smaller trees. I've seen firsthand how insufficient mulching can expose the root systems leading to slower establishment. Interestingly, fruits from younger trees may not always be the tastiest. It's more beneficial to focus on establishing the tree rather than rushing for early fruit yield. I always plant my trees in warm, sunny spots and ensure there's enough space between them. I've also learned the importance of adding organic materials to enrich the soil for better growth. Lastly, I've adopted the 'chop and drop' method to maintain soil moisture, especially during the warmer months.

Can’t wait to learn the best pruning tips for in-ground fig trees!
I’ve tried for years to keep my fig tree manageable, but pruning always seems to stress it out. I get lots of vertical growth, but not a lot of fruit.
I’m thrilled you’ll be growing more trees in the ground! This is going to help me a ton.

I bought a one gallon size from a lady that had it in the pot I bought it in she said it was ready to put it in the ground because it was really root bound ! She said it was 5 years old so I plantedbin the ground! So do I leave it planted in the ground or get a 3 to 5 gallon bucket and replant in the bucket! It's a Chicago Hardy Fig! What do I do? So you sell fig trees to the public?

A friend wants to get rid of a fig tree that has been in ground for 30+ years and gets cut down to the ground every fall. When it gets cut this fall, could this be dug up and planted at my house? We're on Long Island, Zone 7a.

I've dug one up and it lived. But you can also get cuttings and root them.

Ross what direction do you plant them. South, south west. Is it good if I plant a fig tree on the south east side of my house to avoid the west wind? I live in North Jersey Sussex county. Let me know.

I start growing my cuttings in a 1 gal container, late spring I transfer to a 5 gal Lowes or HD bucket, after 1 or 2 years I transfer to a 15 gal container. My 3 early figs are Campaniere, LSU Champagne, and Violette de Bordeaux. I’m in 6b and don’t grow in ground trees.

Ok…So I buy one of your 1 gallon potted figs. I should then up pot it into a 3 gallon pot to get better root growth. So how long should that fig stay in that 3 gallon container?? 1 growing season? Two??

I root them in the 1 gallon size. Move them up to a 2-3. In 2-3 months they're usually ready to plant.
