This shirt series was my introduction to your channel, Jennifer. I really enjoyed it. I’ve never sewn a collared shirt for men or women, but I think I could give it a try now for my husband! Thank you.
I am sewing it currently. I have two more fabrics so I hope I get it right by the third try. This is literally my first sewing project. I don't know how I am going to do the buttons yet.
I've made this pattern so many time short sleeve and long sleeve. It's amazing and easy to do. The longest part is cutting and placing all the pieces. 😂
Looks awesome! I'm currently making this shirt and am on the button-band sewing portion. Could someone explain why you "stitch the bottom short edge to match the length of them hem" rather than just hemming it as well? Or is there a hemming step I'm missing?
Hey Jennifer you did a wonderful job on that shirt you mentioned your straight pins where did you get your straight pins pins from you said that they were new I would like to order some of those
They are called 'Magic Pins' and I also did a video all about my pin collection if you want to see my evolution over the years: ua-cam.com/video/jcHxRgZKMX8/v-deo.html
Hi there, this is my first time seeing your channel. My daughter and I wanted to sew this shirt. She has never sewn before; I haven't sewn in decades - back in the days when all girls had to take home economics class in public school. So one class - 35 students - an hour long - decades ago - what could go wrong?. Practically qualifies me as a non-sewer except I know the terms and remember a few techniques. My daughter wanted to make this shirt to wear for herself, so we needed darts. Of course, we had no pattern with darts that we could use or even look at for an example. Halfway through the project, my old high school Singer straight-stitch and zigzag with automatic buttonholder (advanced for its day) conked out. My daughter went back home with an unfinished shirt. I felt bad about that. So I bought a new sewing machine - haven't even brought it into from the car yet, still unboxed. I found your video. Liked, thumbs upped and subbed. I feel intimidated bc you said, "This project is probably good for an advanced beginner. I wouldn't have this be like your first sewing project ever." Too late! It was frustrating to try to 'hack' this pattern for a young lady to wear. Frustrating that we used the 'small' size and should've used medium. Frustrating that the machine broke down. Frustrating to not have a serger and wouldn't know how to serge if we did have one. Frustrating that she had to go home, 320 miles, without a completed shirt. I'm going to look for the other videos you say you made that show more details on 'how to' do different parts of this shirt. (Hope they're in a playlist.) I've rebought the fabric, pattern, fusible interfacing, bought a new ($76) machine, etc. I'm hoping to be able to mail her a shirt that just needs the buttons sewn on (she took the buttons with her). This one shirt has cost quite a lot of money, but the mother-daughter time is priceless. We actually got a few good laughs along the way. Plus she learned some terms, a few techniques, and some confidence that projects like this can be doable even though this one wasn't - so far. Thanks for your video. I really do appreciate it. I think that so many people being shut-in with this covid-19 will have many people looking for channels like yours. Just please keep in mind that there are people out there with no knowledge, who want to start right in. By that I mean that I'm not looking for intro to sewing vids, bc I did that and they are overly long-winded, not worth watching. 30 minutes later, no project started. I like that you show more than 'how to,' you actually do some teaching. Washer pattern weights; use glue to tack fabric down; and iron to set the glue; things like that. Very helpful for the beginner who wants to start on a project and 'learn by doing.'
Wow quite a sewing adventure there! Thanks for taking the time to write all that, and glad this video series can help. I've been doing videos aimed at true beginners this year so hopefully that will help you and your daughter. Try not to get frustrated when projects don't go exactly to plan. That is part of the journey and even sewing "fails" will teach you something you can use moving forward.
Looks great! This is one of my favorite patterns! Though it seems you have a little to much ruffling happening at the sleeve hole. Easing is the most crucial part of shirt making. Also the most difficult to master! Thanks for the video
Didn’t finish. Does this pattern have any room for modification? I’ve plenty of things for women but no menu’s shirt. Do you think this would be too ambitious?
Excellently done!!! What a lucky husband to get. such a fabulous shirt! I'll be picking up this pattern now that I've seen that clever two piece sleeve. Loved your coverage of the techniques. This is gorgeous filming! What lighting do you use? I'd love to light my sewing machines nice and brightly like that!
Thanks Andrea!!! Mostly I've been using the Mountdog 3-light kit along with some from this LimoStudio kit - both are reasonably priced but the Mountdog is significantly brighter. kit.com/sewingreport/youtube-filming-gear/1627494-mountdog-1350w-photo kit.com/sewingreport/youtube-filming-gear/limostudio-photograp
@@SewingReport Woah! Wow! That's super professional!!! I don't think I'll be bringing giant soft boxes into my sewing room, but thank you so much for the answer!
I'm one of those people who needs a room to be surface of the sun bright. Our previous bedroom had a light fixture that held 9 bulbs and I put 90W daylights in it. We would also install those T5 workshop light fixtures in regular rooms which made filming / working in them a lot easier. www.homedepot.com/p/Lithonia-Lighting-2-Light-High-Output-Multi-Volt-T5-Compact-White-Fluorescent-Strip-Light-ZR-2-54T5HO-MVOLT-GEB10PS/203137160?MERCH=REC-_-PIPHorizontal2_rr-_-202838871-_-203137160-_-N
Thanks for your input! I'm currently doing a simplicity 8427. It's the first thing I have made for myself. I'm Hoping to do a good job! Turns out sewing is all about making things for other people. Not that I have a problem with that. But as it turns out. It's fun to make things for yourself. Just more difficult. Or I should say. Making wearable clothing for yourself is more difficult than making a quilt!!! Just sayin'
I actually used this pattern, it is really for a thin man, so I had to make adjustments for my husband. But, I did not have iron on interfacing only the old fashion kind which I hand based. Honestly, today's shirts do not have any interfacing from off the rack so I am wondering, should interfacing be used if ready wear clothes do not have them? It adds a lot of extra time.
For collared shirts, I do believe interfacing is necessary. Otherwise they would not have any shape and the thing I love about them is the crisp collars. We just bought a Calvin Klein shirt for my husband, and I noticed it had VERY crisp interfacing and I am going to order some if I do another shirt.
That shirt is gorgeous! I've never heard of the 'magic pins' till this vid. I reviewed at Connecting Threads. I person said they were great, another said 'they bend easily & are not very sharp'. Could you please let me know your take? Thanx for sharing :D
Because they are my "new" pins I'm treating them with care but they are sharp and haven't left noticeable holes in fabrics. As far as them bending, most pins will bend if you put enough pressure on them. They were a tad pricey, but I do like the grips and feel they're easier to hold and use then my others. That might be a good video idea actually, going over all the different types of pins. I've got at least 5-6 kinds.
@@SewingReport Thank you. A pin review would be great. I'm a really new sewist & am trying to learn what products are best without making a bunch of willy nilly purchases that aren't good for my budget. Also I've heard mention somewhere about glass head pins? Need to check into that. :D
Am I the only one that thinks there's a problem with the notches on the sleeve pieces in this pattern? You can match the edges of the pieces or the notches, but not both. Which makes the usual challenge of easing a high sleeve cap less likely to succeed. I'd love to hear if anyone else has had this issue and how they solved it.
My husband wears an extra large shirt but has a large neck. He’s most comfortable with a 19 inch neck. If he gets a 19 inch neck, the shirt is way too big.

I enjoy the educational sew along. Keep up the good work.
it was very easy way to sew shirt . i like it thank you.
I actually use this pattern and modify for men's native style ribbon shirt. But I always have trouble with the cuffs.
I’m learning and got this pattern to attempt exactly that!
Thank you very much ! Found them on your link :)
great video, loved the brevity

Love your videos but I can’t find a xxxl sized pattern my normal shirt size is 20 - 38/39. Do you know a pattern I can use
Love the video. Do you have a link for the sewing pins being used? Love them!

What kind of interfacing did you use for this project? Thanks for your efforts to make this tutorial video for us.
I like a well made high quality shirt.

Setting sleeve is the most difficult task.
I’m kinda new to sewing tops, but I found sleeves to be the easiest for me. Collars confuse me lol

Good! Thank You ;->
I have that pattern havent made it yet
First time it took me forever to make, but that happens with all new patterns for me.
What is the name of the glue you used?
For which portion? I used both Elmer's Washable School Glue and Fabri-Tac.

No one ever responded. Too bad. I was also interested in the answer.
WAIT!!! you use Elmer’s glue😳😳😳😳
Yes I do
