Hi! Thank you for your content. I have endeavored this school term in trying to provide an extra-curricular activity in a drawing and painting workshop here in Spain, having studied art at the end of the 90's at university in southwest London, yet for various reasons not having been able to further my career, especially in a foreign country, getting my degree accepted and starting a family. I have some questions: At what age do you feel children can draw from real life and not copy from a picture ? And, do you have any motivational issues, especially with repeating the same grid method for drawing, and if so, what do you suggest as it is hard to balance routine with variety to keep them interested? Would you suggest to stick to drawing in the early ages of development or can children start painting early on? When would you encourage children to depict texture or learn brush strokes, contrasts and composition? Also, how long are your classes? In my case an hour and half may be too long for some, and not long enough for others. And yet some (particularly the younger ones. I teach Junior school kids) have no interest in finishing something they started the week prior. Thank you!
I have seen some references in comments (not specifically this video) to art therapy as an outlet especially after the pandemic. This I feel hard with respect to structure, but I can see the benefits, although there are some exercises that involve little thought to encourage creativity and expression, it's a difficult topic to continue throughout a school year for lack of ideas, so I was wondering your perspective on artistic expression as you suggest this is only possible with older children. I have struggled with transmitting my enthusiasm and 'vision' , being faced with children quite hurtfully responding with disinterest, seeking a quick results with minimal effort or just 'messing around' so to speak, whereby some children wish to fulfill a tactile need. I relate to a comment in your video for Art Teachers where you mention wanting to teach art and not just provide an arts and crafts experience, which I feel most kids are expecting and they can also become overwhelmed by unrealistic expectations and I feel in part to blame because I try to draw with them to show them how I would approach a drawing task and feel they are expected to draw just as well. Also being asked by the same 'problematic' child why can't they just draw what they want, which then questions my role and purpose and also my ability to coordinate the class adequately, as I can not provide my personal attention to each of them individually. It has been quite quite hard🙄.. Added the fact the space I am using has not been provided exclusively for my use and I need to clear up (sometimes staying on an extra hour) and having to take my materials to and fro. Thanks again if you manage to read this far (anyone) 😅

Why not teach students to draw the four basic shapes first then next how to join the four basic shapes all with value?

the grid is a bad idea, you are teaching them to create facsimile and not explore or understand form.
