Sports streaming is here. Will TV break?

- Live news and sports were supposed to keep us in the cable bundle. But now, you’ve got Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime, Lionel Messi on Apple TV, WWE Smackdown on Netflix, and Google’s UA-cam TV as the fourth biggest TV provider in the country. Even traditional TV is giving in, with a new mega-sports app from Fox, Disney’s ESPN, and Warner Brothers Discovery. Live sports was the last holdout, and now it’s embracing the cord-cutters. This week on TechCheck, we update our “Great Rebundling” deep-dive and ask, does live sports break the dam?

But the difference between streaming services and cable providers is you can suspend your subscription for months and then restart it when a program or series comes back. I do this all the time with Hulu and Netflix so I really only pay nine months out of the year (three months on three months off ). You cannot do that with cable services.
CNBC is a direct competitor to this new sports streaming service. They have an incentive to spread negativity against this new service. Apparently, Comcast and Paramount-CBS weren't even invited by Disney, Fox and WB for this new service.
It's Raw on Netflix not Smackdown.
Reporters don’t even do research just sad I think for other countries smackdown will be on netflix but RAW ON NETFILX IS IN USA
@@lavoncetisdaleCNBC is a USA Based TV Network and they've 100% messed-Up. 😂
I'm glad someone flagged this. It would be difficult to cram more inaccuracies into a 15 minute clip.
With Ads on streaming the real question is ... Isn't streaming just cable TV but piecemeal billing?
@texasscifi3431
Exactly, the point of streaming was to become cable. They want more money from the people.
I mean, at least you have control on what you want to watch and when and be able to pause it and play whenever. Versus following a schedule
I will not buy a streaming service just to watch one game. I also dont need football six days a week.
It's funny to think that streaming services were consumer-centric and that's why they slashed the ads entirely... Now they're realizing that to sustain the business model need companies to pay for our attention anyway.
I think it’s trash having to subscribe to streaming services just to watch a game.
Especially, when just a few years ago, everything was free over the air television.
It’s still free, idk why you guys don’t just google it. You don’t have to pay for streaming services.
being able to watch shows on a ocmputer/mobile will always beat old tv
The trick is you don't subscribe to every single streaming service at the same time. You just subscribe to one or maybe two, and catch up on what you want to watch there. Then cancel and subscribe to a different service.
5:10 Even with “streamflation” we don’t have to pay the ridiculous monthly rental fees for the DVRs and other equipment.
Good point!
India has had sports streaming for over 10 years and they still also watch TV over there.. maybe TV could focus on less ads and more content to draw viewers back ?
But the situation in India is changing. When the next IPL media rights comes in, digital rights will surely outbid TV rights. Also many youths in India do not watch TV. They just rely on streaming apps for entertainment.
I'm not joining peacock to watch one game. I'll just watch the highlights on the NFL UA-cam channel
Here in India, Super Bowl game will be available on DAZN with Game Pass for $1.
I was been saying that. It's always free to watch on UA-cam...damn I love UA-cam my #1 app
Good idea. I don’t watch sports, so I don’t have to pay for sports that I don’t watch, like I’ve been doing for decades on the cable networks.
I feel streaming is indeed the future, very soon people will shift completely to streaming to watch sports, much like how Netflix and the other streaming services have become the home of movies and shows.
The fact that just one football game took 23% of the internet is more scary than amazing .
Not really. It's just unaccounted bandwidth that was always being consumed its just that cable networks, antennas, and satellite took the stress off the internet
This nickel and diming us back to cable type options is so frustrating. The reason we cut the cord was to get away from ads and to be able to choose what we wanted when we wanted it. Now we have to deal with ads, inflated pricing, and bundling? I subscribed to UA-cam TV just for mostly college football and NFL on ESPN. It was not cheap. now that the season is over, it's getting canceled. I'll be canceling Apple TV+ since I watched The Morning Show. How much more money do these people need?
.
Being over 55, I'm going to drop my AT&T cell service because I can get a better deal with T-Mobile plus get Netflix and Disney+ thrown in for free. So I'll be dropping my current Netflix and Disney+ for new accounts.
That playoff streaming game did not go off without a hitch. Articles and social media were complaining about the production and glitches in the video.
CNBC is owned by the same company as Peacock, of course they'll be saying that it went off "without a hitch"
My experience was perfect. I haven't had any hiccups with live events on the app.
As someone who has spent months immersed in researching the media landscape, I must highlight that, as others have flagged in the comments, the misreporting and oversights in this clip are concerning. These include:
1. The absurdity of comparing the basket of top ad-free U.S. streaming services to the average cable bill for several reasons: a) cable is filled with ads (making it an apples-to-oranges comparison), b) these services, collectively, have far more content than cable (given their vast libraries), and c) there's likely not a single household in the U.S. that subscribes to each of these services simultaneously, let alone the premium versions.
2. The opinion from guest Elaine Low (at 6:35), "If you look at how much revenue ESPN generates vs. ESPN+, you have a fair idea of how tough it is to be a streamer in this age." It seems both Elaine and the show's producers overlooked that ESPN+ is an add-on service, not the streaming equivalent of the main ESPN networks. ESPN+ lacks the high-profile live sports broadcast on the main networks (except for some simulcasts), which explains why its average revenue per user is about one-third of ESPN's, not because of the challenges of streaming.
3. The incorrect statement that WWE "Smackdown" is moving to Netflix, when it is actually WWE "Raw."
4. Most annoyingly, questioning whether the new sports joint venture streaming service will be "TV's breaking point." Host Deirdre Bosa said, "So, instead of holding onto TV viewership, they will drive fans to streaming." This is incorrect for many reasons, not least because the companies involved have stated that this is not the venture's aim. In fact, there's good reason to believe that the cord-cutting resulting from this will be negligible. Here is a more balanced view from a report I'm publishing next week:
"Opinions differ on how the sports media landscape will be affected by the introduction of a 'skinny bundle' priced between $35 and $55 per month. Some view this as a significant shift, while others doubt the demand for such a service. Most anticipate the price will be set at the mid-point or higher of that range to prevent widespread cord-cutting. Since cable TV packages typically include home broadband, all nationally televised (major league) games, and other entertainment options, the launch of this new app is unlikely to compel consumers to cut the cord. The product seems to target younger individuals who are passionate about sports and willing to spend over $50 per month when (presumably) combined with other streaming services, and who do not currently have pay TV."
For those interested, you can read part one of my report of this report, which extensively covers the TV and streaming landscape, with no paywall here: valuepunks.substack.com/p/the-walt-disney-company-dis-part?
This feels like an infomercial.
Bill Simmons said it best, "Make it stop" and Brian Sullivan pointed to the popular strategy of signing up for one month, bingeing your show(s) and then cancel for the next 11 months or so. We'll see how long 'a la carte' streaming lasts without longer (more than monthly) subscriptions. These networks and media giants are cannibalizing themselves.
I still think this is very NFL centric. As a Premier League and Champions League fan, I have to sub to peacock, paramount plus, and still have cable or a cable like subscription (like Fubo) to watch the majority of the games...
Streaming is big meas
not to mention commercials....no one wants to watch commercials...or pay not to watch them. I stopped watching entertainment all together. lol. Still using cousin's disney service because they havent cut off sharing yet lol.
I cancelled all my streaming services cause it was more expensive now than regular cable
I will not now or ever pay for something that has commercials I cannot skip full stop.
That part
@lifethrualense1234
Have you considered buying DVDS?
They should just let you rent a movie or t.v. show for a small price (i.e $1.99 - $4.99) without needing a subscription.
The appeal of streaming vs live t.v. (i.e.cable) is being able to watch content on your own terms, at your leisure, at whatever time you want.
You can do that lol
What? 😂😂😂 You can rent almost anything you want on Vudu, Apple TV, Amazon, etc. without a subscription.
Lol you are literally describing iTunes digital downloads and Google Play Movies & TV. I think it's a little bit more expensive than that (around 6-10 dollars) but they let you rent it for 48 hours from the time you start playing. That's how I watched Mission Impossible 7 and it was cheaper than a cinema ticket, and I got to watch it over and over for 2 days.
If you’re subscribing to a streamer for more than one month a year, you’re doing it wrong.
My brother signs up with a streaming service only when it's Football season. Most of the time he suspends the service.
Real simple. Stop watching TV.
Do your research miss, it's WWE Raw not SmackDown that is going to Netflix
*_And big names like Netflix is aiming to be stricter with account or password sharing._*
Yeah, and guess how many streaming video services I subscribe to?
ZERO.
WWE is going to Raw, not SmackDown
This is why pirating is ok. These company's wanna be money hungry thats fine..... we'll just steal the content lol
Here I am... Holding on my own there in the high sea.
So they are basically starting another Hulu with adding sports. 🤔 but most of them sold their stake in Hulu back to Disney to only join back together and start another streaming channel. I’m about to just stick to UA-cam and my UA-cam premium membership to skip all these ads and call it a day. 🤦🏾♂️
Different cost, time vs money. Or do you think our time is worthless? The time that commercials took on the old system was one of the advantages of no adds, you got the time back. But it was just a matter of time before it went back to the old system of taking more of our time and giving us less content.
My rent includes cable so I have no need for streaming services.
The only consultation is the services are driving themselves into the ground.
I am very happy NBA TNT is on HBO Max
Great video essay. And also, let's be honest, the host is kinda fine af 😍
do they mean "cable"? 😊
A friend of mine Download everything from torrent 😀👌🏻
Netflix owns the space because they make good original shows and movies. Everyone else is focused on trying to get back to their glory days in revenue that they forgot to keep making good shows and movies.
Economic reset? Funny way to say “greed.”
I'll just avoid sports:
Flyers
Sixers
Eagles
Phillies
😭😭😭😭😭😭
Do they tell her to move so much or it’s spontaneous? Girl moves as if something is poking her under.
Amazon and Apple TV are KILLING SPORTS.
I have watched less MLS and MLB this year than any point in the past 10 years. Including a pandemic.
Its a reason why we got away from cable but now yall doing to much with all this streaming...it was fine just streaming 4yrs ago stop with all this extra shii
Fubo
but still no freestyle wrestling
Yaarh !
Get someone else to present.
All the pirating sites are loving this
Cable will die fast and hard.
Premium Sports channels have been a monopoly since 1998 by a company owned by all major telecommunications companys until 2018 when eleven sports entered my country and now we have basically a duopoly, we have other sports channels on cable tv but is less interesting sports or second league games like eurosports, our fooball federation channel, non premium club channels, one generalist channel also sometomes show gaes ect, every time sports is on broadcast tv like in other countries it wins the rating, overall is true that news and sports keep cable tv alive but here most have cable tv because internet plan is cheap with tv rather than without it also telephone is free although almost no one use it.
Todays streaming is Paralysis by Analysis.....smh
1. Consumers want the benefits of on-demand and no ads but they dont want to pay for that upgrade.
2. Consumers want a one stop shop for their content needs but dont want a monopoly.
3. Consumers are id!ots.
🏴☠️
Good thing I don’t watch sports.
The sign of the devil.
No my TV 📺 will not break get real! 🤬
This segment would have been super relevant 10 years ago. A little late to the party don't you think?
Thank god for piracy!
this is terrible
YOU ARE NOT PAYING MORE FOR STREAMING -Cable might seem like less THATS BEFORE THE DUMB FEES AND TAXES
With the combination of every streaming out here which you are starting to need to see all of your content, I would have to disagree
