@Issa Wheeler DUDE I’m an American who believes people can shit on the government if they want to. There was a point in time where the British killed Americans (before they considered independent and Americans) because they spoke out against them and spread anti government propaganda. The British I’m sure believed that they were giving the Americans a good life and thought the people who spoke out against them should be punished. So, when Americans became independent they made sure to include free speech in their laws. People can spread whatever propaganda they want for a reason. America doesn’t ”give” people a better life. People work hard, Make their own damn money, and build their own damn empires here. American law gives you the opportunity to do many things that other countries might not allow, like use of free speech, but people give themselves a better life, or the people around them who care about them do.

These differences are refreshing and insightful. If I am around, watch, listen to people who look like me and have had the same/similar experiences as me it can grow a bit stale. I'm from St. Vincent and I picked up on a couple of things he said before watching this. This is the first time, though, that I'm hearing of a government shutdown.
All societies are “weird” in one way or another. Many of us in the U.S., especially those who’ve traveled or have lived in culturally diverse cities, have picked up on some of our strange customs and predominant beliefs. And yes, our chickens are way too big. They’ve been genetically modified to grow really fast in a short amount of time. It’s actually pretty cruel, but government and big time ag lobbyists have played a significant role in keeping the public blind regarding where the food comes from (ag-gag laws). People are very detached and it’s frustrating. Overall, the United States is a wonderful country despite its cruel history (as is true with many countries). Things are changing, albeit slowly, but there is progress :)
@@kel5710 Sure, every country looks weird to any other by nature. It wasn't an attack, It is just that since american culture is so widespread we tend to take it as the measuring yard for 'normal' behavior and social norms, and it just shouldn't. The acceptance of diversity should be the measure.
I had the exact same thing, I grew up in Germany & coming to America when I was 18, was INSANE. I watched the news & they had a report on a local cat on tv - they have zero global coverage. In Germany you get global events first thing in the morning, like every news program was about global news & then local. In America, it's only local, it's really nuts. I did geek out the first time I ordered pizza. At the time Germany didn't have any pizza delivery, no food delivery, like unless you were assigned to a disability food delivery thing. So the first time I ordered pizza it was from Pizza Hut & they were like "What would you like?" and I was like ... "pizza!" and they were like "yea, what kind?" I was like ... "uh, what?" and they were so patient with me, bless her heart - patiently explained what pizza was & different toppings. It was the best food I ever tasted. That was 20 yrs ago I still love Pizza Hut, and the news is still fucked. I had the same exact issue with buffalo wings, I thought it was buffalo too. Bless you & thank you for speaking up on everything, you're appreciated. ♥
Kitten -- you were watching the LOCAL news. Of course there is no global coverage on the local news. There are two separate news programs. One is strictly local and the other is national and international.
@@peterpiper7441 How do people choose what to watch I mean local vs national)? And does local news cover what's happening nationally as well or only the local news?
I adore him. He says "Volkswagen" the correct way, with a German tongue (as it is a German word), then re-says it for the Americans in their dialect. 14:16
I felt off ever since the news of George Floyd got out. I didnt think it was ok to have fun at this type of time. Thank you Trevor for the video. It got my spirits back up again😁
i agree that that's true but i have the exact same conversations with international students at my uni.. just having people from a different background or country causes these kinds of long conversations because you have so many things to compare and common things to discover.
I prefer "Folksvoggen" vs. "Vokeswaggen", but you should see the looks I get here in America when I pronounce it the correct way. Then again, a white complained to me when I was briefly talking with an Ethiopian clerk at a 7-Eleven, "What are you doin' talkin' to him?" I think the clerk and I looked at each other and I thought, "White guy, because the Ethiopian is more polite and more intelligent than you are." (Btw, I'm also white.) Sometimes I wish I had brown skin or black skin instead of pink skin. I'd feel alot less ashamed.
Me too. I happened to have the captions on & it correctly translated the American pronunciation but made a complete hash of Trevor's SA / correct version.😆
I love how he said it correctly first then "corrected" himself by mispronouncing it so the US audience would know what he was referring to lol. As a South African the mispronounciation grates me so much lol.
Called once to finnish fire department because there was a cat in a tree at our summer cottage. They responded: "We have never seen a dead cat in a tree, have a nice day"
Same in Germany. If you call the fire Department for a cat sitting in a tree they will tell you ,,Well we can come and get the cat out, no problem, but that would cost you a couple thousand Euro. Do you still want us to come? No? Okay then have a nice day😁

Yes, you do. And not just about black people. About the McCarthy period. About political persecution. About the destruction of Native American life. About the persecution and illtreatment of mexicans. There are so many skeletons in the history of the US that need to be dealt with.
random Swiftie I have never liked laughing in the background. I absolutely love watching him now in his home because then I can laugh when it’s appropriate which is all the time of course but I don’t have to hear a whole group of people laughing, which actually distracts my thoughts about what he just said.
It explains the success of a series like 'Mork & Mindy'; it's always refreshing to hear an outsiders view on things we take for granted; the good AND the bad.
I love how he said "Volkswagen" correctly, pretty much perfectly, the first time... Then corrected himself for our tiny little American minds to wrap around comfortably. (Because the *American way* -"must"- be the right way, right?) Lol!
Well, that's not really true at least for me. Some schools massively struggle with these issues but I wouldn't generalize all of America based on your viewpoint.
US history learning is what it is, because its unethical to teach the kids the truth, if its not patriotic or good for the morale. When they grow up, they either are amazed and outraged to hear about things like Mi Lai for the first time, or they take it as weird communist/terrorist/current enemy propaganda, deny it, because it cant be true, it wasnt talked in classes. Ive seen also other unusual misconceptions, like Americans invented the car (and lots of other stuff), or they won the Vietnam war, or how young white Americans alone cut the nazis down in the WW2. Or my favorite, a teenaged girl pondered if and what other countries could see the moon too, since it was stationary over America... They are simply told from the start that they are the very best there is. And thats why it is the only country you can have masses chant the countrys name just for the fun of it, not at a sporting event etc. If my fellow Finns ever start doing that, Im coming to Sweden :)
The question is: how much do you learn about the treatment of Sami and Finish peoople? About forced conversions? About the forbidding of their languages? We danes also learned quite a lot about slavery. About the holocaust. About the treatment of Native Americans. But we didn't learn about the dark sides of our relationship with the Føroyar and Greenland. We also don't learn much about how we sold the caribbean possesions of the danish commonwealth in the early twentieth century to the US without even considering the opinion of the population. We sold it with the people. Last slave trade that we did really. It is easy to point to the dark spots in someone elses history. The problem is being honest about the skeletons in your own closet. It is about studying how our migrants became abusers in their homelands. How they drove out indigenous populations in many places. I studied history in a swedish school for 3 years and I never saw the sami issue covered and this was in the late eighties and early nineties. The splinter in the eye of thy neighbour vs the beam in thy own is really a very good analogy still.

Why would that be vulgar? It's a mindset from a time where there was almost no food. Right now in my country we have enough food. Nobody dies from food shortages so why keep that mindset like food is something holy? It's like Indians praise cows. It's just stupid. Yes if there is a shortage of food, people will automatically go back to that mindset. But it isn't necessary right now.
true - I took my granddaughter to a birthday party with several african americans and that up one from disney is how they sang happy birthday -I wondered where it came from - so much happier
Totally love the talk about race. Even from an outsider eyes like me, racial problems in America are really messed up, and there should be a talk about it. Its YOUR history, YOU'VE gone through it, and YOU still struggles with it. Understanding why things the way it is and how it started will really make a difference. Hoping for the best!
That doesn't sound profitable at all though. Surely there's more money to be made if we divide them up into little camps and pit them against each other.

I never let it be sung and if someone tries I start clapping to speed it up. It’s so bizarre!!!!
Have you heard of the birthday dirge?
I'm from Asia. One time we had a video conference with our team in north america and there was a birthday surprise for one of the members there and they sung the happy birthday song. My team in asia were trying our best not to laugh because the beat was so sad it really sounded like a funeral song.
in our country we sing it fast and jolly while clapping to the beat then sing it a second time 2x faster. so we thought it was hilarious that they're singing it so sadly 😂

@Mary C Huh? Minor keys aren't hard on most instruments, it's just the 6th mode of a major. If you know your key signatures, it's super easy. Just convert it to major in your head (i.e., if you're playing in a minor, just play in CMaj, but start on A, it's exactly the same thing).

And this, my friends, is why we need diversity in our lives. Different perspectives give us new thoughts. And sometimes highlight similarities.
Which is why South Africans miss Trevor the most (other than his family).
@Toby Allis The diversity I reference here is Trevor, who lived in another country, making humourous comparisons to what he's experienced here in the US. These differences are refreshing and insightful. If I am around, watch, listen to people who look like me and have had the same/similar experiences as me it can grow a bit stale. I enjoy both: same and difference. Diversity to me is experiencing directly and/or learning from others, like I did listening to Trevor, who experienced things I have not.

The past few weeks has showed me that we learn more about American history in Sweden that they do in America...
Sad but true.
Read "Lies My Teacher Told Me" books. They expose all the lies in textbooks.

Lol I'm from South Africa and it's always pretty cool to see how our cultures intersect
@@mbasador35 every story he told it's like he's talking about us, how his mom behaves and what she said about the americans wasting food, how children play, everything is the same. You're from the south and we are from the north, maybe what we eat is different and how we dress is different to a certain point with globalization, but our behaviors are exactly the same, not just us but in all the continent.
His smart enough to not stupidly generalize africa.when he does it actually does apply to almost all Africans..am from Zambia, the escalator story country 🤣🤣if u know I know
@@nah_thando9336 ohhhh yes I know, and guess what, even we used to do that as well and i'm still doing it when the opportunity present it self, like who doesn't like escalators? the first time I saw the escalator when i was a kid I couldn't stop going up and down, up and down hhhhhhh
911 was watched in many countries in Africa, the cat thing is true too. If you call emergency to get your cat they will look at you like you're stupid or something is completely wrong with you.
I’m glad this was posted today. With tragedy going around us, I needed to get my mind off of it for a bit and have a good couple of laughs.
same first time i've laughed in days
I think he is out protesting. I wonder if he will come back with a new hoodie?
"Ive never lookee into someones eyes and see sex being erased just like that" 😂😂😂😂
