I remember when they used to say, aswel as Andrei used to say that he had actually killed a bit over a hundered, that he was killing when he was a teacher too ever since he was like 25-30 already. But they actually decreased the number only because they haven't found the other bodies at all or haven't found proof for that.
OR one theory is... the USSR went and kept that hidden because they didn't wanna make the case worse than it already was showing their incompetence taking so long to find one man compared to the USA.
But a man with such a number and all those years time, it's very well possible and i honestly believe it to be true, but it's something i wanna be careful about spreading only because it's not a proven fact. So you be the judge.

It happens all the time with serial killers not being properly investigated or charged. I'm in Vancouver, British Columbia, and it happened more than once here. Back in the 80's there was Clifford Robert Olson who, raped, tortured, mutilated and murdered 11 children, he was caught and released and then killed more victims. Then again in the early 2000's Robert Pickton was a pig farmer who murdered, butchered 49 women and fed their remain to his pigs. He was caught for attacking prostitute with a knife but got off because he convinced the police that he was the victim. When he was awaiting trial, an undercover officer was placed in a prison cell with him and Picton admitted to murdering 49 women, bragging that he was going to do "one more to make it an even 50".

So interesting, yet so disturbing. Loved the longer format and the detail that was put into this. I’m glad they didn’t declare him insane and unfit to stand trial or something. I do wonder how his wife responded and felt about everything. Although it seems he kept it completely separate from his at-home life, it just seems like there were so many dots that could’ve been connected to him: he was questioned, he was never home at the time of the murders, he rode the trains, etc. I assume (due to his BPD), that he manipulated her and pretty much gaslight her into believing he was innocent. Would love to hear what she had to say about it all. And what his children thought as adults.

Many people estimate he could have even massacred as many as 60 million of his own people. Your people. So yeah I don't think the 90s were THAT bad. And I certainly wouldn't say by "all accounts". Soviet Union had a political system like every other country on the world. Just like in every country, some people are untouchable, whereas other supporters of the establishment are gladly fed to society. It's exactly the same, the difference are social attitudes promoted and economy. You can't say that an unimportant supporter of government, who graduated from community college, is a person of outstanding education with connections at the top.
He wasn't a member important enough to avoid prison. He lost his job countless times and didn't do politics for living. Back then, huge part of society belonged to the party. It doesn't mean than 15% of society, random activists, were protected from social repercussions.

Education...any Education was enough to be considered elite. The fact that he was also an ardent communist party member and held a job as a teacher was more than enough to make him above suspicion.
In addition crimes (serial murder, sexual deviance and other sadistic behavior) was considered a "western" thing something that not only didn't happen in Russia but couldn't be from a party member. It's part of what took so long to put the pieces together to catch him.

Lawrence is my grandads name and according to her I was going to be named Christie after John Christie. Well of course I asked who that was and she told me to look it up. So off I went to the library and asked for books on John Christie the lady asked my why on earth would I want books on that awful man I explained my gran said I was going to be named after him she looked horrorfied but took me to the books and where I voukd see the crime scene photos. I was hooked and started reading about seriel killers after that, yeah I was a weird kid lol. It wasn't until 30 plus years later I actually found out my other grandads middle name was Christie so I wasn't going to be named after a crazy seriel killer after all. Why no one told me this when i asked why would they name me after john Christie ill never understand but i was told it wasnt worth telling me the truth as my gran would argue against it. I wonder what would have become of him if he had not endured so much in his younger years. Perhaps he was a beast anyway, but he was also a product.

Yeah, not sure if I've heard of a more disturbed killer before. Sent chills down my spine. If only he had been caught sooner.

Boy are you ready to be disappointed? Ice pick killer, pig farm killer, granny ripper, etc. Tons and tons more that did things even worse than this make Chikatilo look like a Saint in comparison.

Does he really think all these "solved" cases were actually solved instead of being just another case of the police pinning the blame on anyone they could get their hands on?

    • @ShishkinaOlga
      @ShishkinaOlga 2 роки тому

That's a valid concern, but as far as I know, the crimes very actually solved. There very many serial killers in Soviet Union and not all the police forces treated their cases as this one at the beginning, not all policemen were so idiotic

The film "Citizen X" is a must watch because it is about this case from the moment that the first body showed up, until Chikatilo's end.
Just a quick pointer... it is not The Ukraine which is what it was when it was part of the USSR, but since the break up, it is simply known as Ukraine. Just for context, it would be like calling Canada, The Canada.

There was an excellent movie about him, called Citizen X. The investigator, (played by Stephen Rea) was great. He had to muster everything he had, to try and understand Chikatilo, so he could get him to confess, because he was stonewalling him. But what he had to subject himself to mentally, to extract that confession, haunted and deeply disturbed him. This is quite possibly the most heinous serial killer of all time.
His actions, were not that of a typical serial killer, he was highly controlled, hard to catch (despite his blunders), he sniffed out a setup up in the movie and his paranoia served him well to even avoid getting caught. But when he did kill, it was highly viscerally disturbing and again wasn't typical fare of serial killers or even cultists. And more like the lone Wolf creepiness of Ed Gein, mixed with the stuff of nightmares that shocked me far more, than the likes of Ed and Ed's house or any movies based on him. Like Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

You know what? This video is seamless, smooth and ready-to-go. You did a wonderful job of it, too.
I'm a long-time aficionado of true crime stories, and your collection is stellar. One suggestion? Make more long videos, like this one. You've definitely learned about and excelled at the the ~15 min stories. Make more like this!
In any case, I've given you a thumbs-up and subscribed to your channel.

Amazing how he developed his communication skills... From not being able to speak one sentence to the opposite sex to the art of being able to seduce virtually anybody for a random sex with unknown stranger deep in woods...
