  • Detailed Plans for most common shed sizes: kingsfinewoodw...
Includes complete materials list and cut list, with all angles and math done for you! Plus these designs maximize material use, giving you the most amount of shed for the least amount of money.
This is a complete video series detailing exactly how to build a shed from beginning to end. It is presented so that even someone with little to no experience can tackle this project. The instruction teaches the IBC (International Building Code) rules that almost every jurisdiction in the United States follows, so you will be prepared if you need a permit. But in many cases a permit isn’t required for a shed under a certain size.
This project takes only basic tools to accomplish. If you have a circular saw, a drill, a level & a hammer, along with some basic hand tools, you can do this.
There are things that will make it quicker of course, such as a nailgun & compressor. But you can decide what level of tools are needed.
I’ve broken the video into digestible parts. This makes it easier to refer back to a specific section. Or, if you only happen to need instruction in one area, this will save you time, since you can just watch what you need.
Things we used for this project:
    Tools:
    7 Inch Speed Square - amzn.to/3kSDL29
    Milwaukee 25' Tape Measure - amzn.to/3RuBOFt
Machinist Engineer Solid Square - amzn.to/3l22Mb2
Dewalt Circular Saw, Tool Only - amzn.to/3DplHTx
    Dewalt Jig Saw - amzn.to/3wKizOE
Dewalt Power Tool Combo Kit with 2 Batteries and Charger - amzn.to/3johJUr
Bostitch Pneumatic Framing Nailer - amzn.to/3jw6TMo
Best Carbide Forstner drill bits - amzn.to/2zdGZ3e
Dewalt Drill Bit Set - amzn.to/3YoCVZr
    Empire Framing Square - amzn.to/3XRfnvX
    Blue Chalk Wheel - amzn.to/3JvbGIv
    3-1/2 in. Full-Size Palm Nailer - amzn.to/3lch60J
    Husky Air Compressor - amzn.to/3DJdppR
    78" Level - amzn.to/3HSkuFL
    48" Level - amzn.to/3HqnBVm
    Materials:
    Bostitch Framing Nails 2" - amzn.to/3Y4DaJg
TimberLok 6" Heavy Duty Wood Screws - amzn.to/3YnxSZK
    16D galv nails
    6D galv ring shank nails

Ive heard some interesting things about it and my colleague got excellent success with it.

When you calculated the rafter length (hypotenuse), you used 60” as the B side dimension of the triangle (half the span). When you assembled the trusses, you added an extra 1/2” piece on each side to simulate the siding thickness, making the total span 10’-1”, not 10’. Unless your shed deck width is 9’-11” and not 10’, the B side dimension used in your rafter length calculation should have been 60-1/2”, not 60”.

I am so grateful for you posting these videos. I have built my walls on my shed and now have come to the point where it's time to build my trusses. I was looking for a way to build my trusses to give me maximum headroom but still be strong enough to handle a significant snow load as I can't access my shed during the winter months. In my part of the world I can expect about 4 feet of snow. I decided I would install a tin roof so that the snow might slide off the roof in the spring. I originally planned a 4/12 pitch but having seen your 7/12 pitch I can see the advantage which hopefully will cause the snow to slide off. Even if the snow doesn't slide off I am more confident that the runoff in the spring will keep the extra weight from the water to minimize the extra weight

I taught carpentry at a vocational school and the algebra would have scared them to death. I taught every method from stepping off a foot of run at a time stepped off five times on your example shed.
Second method was the unit length method from the framing square and finally Pythagorean method. We made it fun and they were amazed when I could give them the length of the rafter in a few seconds. Strong motivation for the more advanced but always a simpler method for the less educated in math.
The most simple method of all would be to lay out the rafters directly on the floor and make allowances for the ridge and siding thickness

Outstanding! When I built my shed, & made birdmouths, I winged it, (basically measured a 22° slope for it)tested it on my base floor, & then marked a center line on my shed floor, used that as my mark for the stud rafter cut (used a sliding angle for the ends)& measured down for the birdsmouth cut & then added 6” for the eave.
    This is pretty neatly explained!

Pitch is simply a slope defined as number of inches of rise for every 12 inches of run. As in 3/12 pitch is 3 inches of rise for every 12 inches of run. Slope and pitch are one and the same just expressed in different units.

I'm a total nube at this stuff so of course, I didn't discover that until I had cut and notched all the rafters, so that was eight 2x4s down the drain. Turns out I could have got all the rafter bits out of four 2x4s. Thanks for the vid. I learned a lot!

James thank you for giving the correct definition of pitch. I have had some heated on line arguments with people who define pitch and slope as being synonymous. I was very disappointed one time while watching “This Old House” where Tommy Silva was teaching some apprentices about rafter layout. He said the rafter had a 8 in 12 pitch.

    • @MarkReederConst
      @MarkReederConst 3 роки тому

I was taught wrong. I still catch myself saying pitch instead of slope. I've always believed it important to become a student of my job. So I would learn what ever I could about the job I had so I would be knowledgeable and could do it better. That got a lot easier with the internet. When I was framing I told the crew we were saying it wrong, and went on to explain the difference between slope and pitch. I was ridiculed and laughed at for a long time. I'm still in construction, however I'm a PM and they're still pounding nails, but I'm still learning every day.

    • @jrf2010ification
      @jrf2010ification Рік тому

They're the same thing just expressed in different ways. Granted people usually do use pitch when they mean slope so that could be confusing to someone if they use the number correct to the word.
Oddly enough the Construction Master Pro calculator lists pitch and slope as each other so it would say the above shed roof would have a 4" pitch instead of a 4" slope. Offhand I don't know the fraction by the pitch would be .33 pitch and a 4" slope. Carpenters would use the word pitch but use the number for slope so it is VERY commonly done that way.

I'm building 8 by 12 shed right now following your methods. Hopefully will get it right.
I'm having troubles from the start . My back yard ground is very sloop and uneven !
Money is short! So I'm doing my best from the get go .

Came to see a shed build, get algebra and Pythagorean theorem. Sneaky...very sneaky. Still enjoyed the build...and yes, I noticed the pet rock right away.

Very Good explanation of Pythagorean theorem, and using a speed square (probably the best I've seen). I however, cut my rafters using degrees on my 12" miter saw, it would be 30.5 degrees for a 7/12 pitch.

With all the shed vids on you tube, I was over analyzing and left confused and exhausted.
I have 30 years masonry experience but not sure about framing and what might collapse etc.
Great video. I'm building 10 x 12 shed with gable ...now with 7/12 slope and on a concrete slab with J bolts.
I have hurricane ties etc. I live in Maine. I'm going to watch this whole series and feel confident and will check you out on Facebook .... Thanks
