Bab El Bhar, or “Gate of the Sea”, is one of the gates of the medina of Tunis located to the east of the old wall, on Place de la Victoire. It took the name Porte de France during the French protectorate, a name that is still sometimes given to it today.
The original gate was built during the reign of the Aghlabids. In 1860, a new gate was built in the axis of the future avenue de la Marine, at the request of the French consul Léon Roches, who had obtained authorization from the bey in 1857 to build the consulate outside the walls, more precisely on the future avenue.
In 1939, the gate was cleared of surrounding constructions
The medina, an unmissable place during a visit to Tunis, is located in the historic heart of Tunis, it has been listed as a UNESCO world heritage site since 1979.
