Got some tec lowering shocks to replace the factory ones on my interceptor and now the seat height is a couple inches lower; I’m 5’8” and could not stand flat footed while riding before, but now I can. Thanks.
Hello James, I had the same problem with my Interceptor shocks, it wasn't long before they corroded and looked tatty and the knock from the rear became apparent, which is from the shocks. I first noticed it pushing my bike into the garage as it rolled over the door threshold strip ,and more so going over the speed humps on my street. I fitted Hagon's to mine and the knock from the rear is no longer there. And they perform better on the road, good to see someone has done a video on this problem, cheers.
Hi there. Sounds exactly what I endured for a long time! And it wasn’t the centrestand, as we both know. Great that you eliminated the knocking, just as I did! How many other people suffer this? Loads, I bet!
@@internetpolification yes there's probably quite a few , and for those not mechanically minded to suss things like this out it can be an annoyance, but videos as yours point them in the right direction 👍
The knocking and rattling sound and feeling from the rear of my interceptor has been driving me crazy. It's been good to know a few people online have related the issue to the rear shocks; now I definitely want to change them.
Dear James, I changed my rear shocks to lower the saddle height. I wanted the TEC lowering shocks but at the time there was a 6 month delay on those so I got a 30mm shorter (adjustable), much cheaper and more blingy pair from China. I don't push my bike to anywhere near its limits so I can't comment on handling other than to say they seem fine. I never got the clunk, my bike (the GT version) does not have a centre stand. I don't recall seeing any resin coating on my upper rear shock absorber mounts. Thank you for taking the time to make this excellent video. I eagerly await the next instalment of the 'what gear am I in' video series. Best regards.
That’s just it, isn’t it? It’s not a bike to push near its limits anyway and….why? I just went to the post office on my bike and, even without fine tuning them and messing about with damping etc, they are a noticeable improvement on the OEM ones. Amazing;y so. I think the clonk might be the centre stand. I’m going to remove it in an effort to find out. Yes, re the gear indicator….I’m waiting for a drill bit and thread tap and plan to install a metal ‘pointer’ which would move (with the little magnet on the end of it) between the two sensors…..
Agree with you regarding the cost & spec of the YSS. I went for the Hagon at just over £200. They are an improvement over stock. With the state of UK roads, I’m not sure that any amount of spend will give perfect ride all the time. Have been considering the YSS front suspension upgrade for over 3 years now & still unsure. The front definitely needs an upgrade.
I live in New Orleans, LA within the US which is built on swampland, meaning that the roads are in a constant need of repair as the ground settles so quickly. I got the YSS fork suspension within a month of owning my Conti GT 650 and haven't regretted the purchase one bit - total game changer and worth the money. I'm sure there are other brands that are equivalent in quality, but I can personally recommend 'em.
Hello James, I fitted TEC shocks to my old 865cc Bonneville, the transformation was unbelievable. Mind you if you think the Interceptor shocks are bad, compared to the Bonneville they are more than adequate. I hope to fit TEC Shocks to the Interceptor, so I've put them on my Christmas list....!? Yes I've started a Christmas list already...!
Heavens above….there’s worse ones? 😀 As to Christmas…I buy presents early and put them away thinking “that’s Christmas sorted out then”….after a few weeks I can’t contain the secret any more, start thinking about how one never knows what’s round the corner and…..give the presents months early! Thereby causing me a frantic Christmas looking for gifts!
Tec bike parts has a you tube channel , and i really like what he done with his , there parts are good for the money , agree totaly its not a race bike you bye these to enjoy not get the knee down
True Mark. It’s a 47bhp bike with a claimed top speed of 108mph. Sedate but lovely to ride and characterful. I mean what would be next?…Metmachex box section swinging arm, race cartridge emulators in the forks, costly rear shocks, costly front fork upgrade, carbon-fibre cans, new camshafts, 850 cc conversion, new UCU power commander, uprated clutch. Maybe nitrous injection? A big no to all of that, thanks. What’s the point? I tweaked an XJR1300 to 160bhp (dyno reading), massive weight reduction, titanium fasteners, axles etc £5k of mods. I put nitrous on an XS1100. And the result was frightening on both bikes and that’s great. But to do that sort of thing on a bike like the Interceptor is somewhat misplaced, I’d say.
@@internetpolification im going to turn mine into a back lanner 60/40 tyres etc the sort of roads you see a sign for village and its got a farm 3 houses and a post box ,
It'll be interesting to see if the clunk has gone, from new my bike occasionally does that. Not very often, usually when I go over a speed bump a tad too fast it'll make a clunk sound. I've always assumed it's the centre stand. Ride safe
Nice job James. What size Allen bolts did you use? I did a tool hack when I fitted RE sump guard. Every video on the subject said the exhaust pipes had to be removed in order to fit the sump guard mounts to the frame. I cut down an 8mm Allen key and job done! No exhaust removal! I think the bottom adjuster on your new shocks is for rebound damping? Reduces or speeds up the rate the shock spring returns to its normal position after going over bumps? I’m presuming the Shraeder valve means the shocks are air adjustable?
There’s nothing like a reduced length Allen key! I used 10mm Allen bolts to replace the bottom ones and I bought extended 8mm Allen bolts for the top to accommodate the planner rack brackets which use the top shocker bolts to mount on the bike.yes, the bottom adjuster is for damping and has 8 positions. TEC instructions say set so 3-5 from softest and run for a few weeks and adjust accordingly but not to go to the higher settings which are for smooth track racing. Yes, the Schroeder valve means they can be pressurised from 5-60 psi using a hand pump only and not an airline
I rode the bike to the post office a few minutes after getting g the shocks on. I just put them straight on the bike and the difference, even at that stage, was very apparent. A nicer ride already and that’s without any tuning

Thanks in advance.
Will do then. I went to the post office just after doing this video. I hadn’t touched the shocks at all but had to get the last post. And the difference was immediately obvious. I’ll post a little video once I’ve had time to tweak them and ride a bit etc…….
The instructions that came with the shockers said the dampers need to bed in and the springs settle over a month or so. They suggest 3-5 clicks on the damper adjustment (out of a possible 8 which is the hardest)l altering the preload needs to be done with the bike on the centre stand. The valve on the piggyback runs at 5-60psi but an airline CAN’T be used, probably due to the risk of over inflating. So a foot pump or similar needs to be used…. I do like the look of them as OEM look awful, I think, and I personally prefer chrome springs on a retro-type bike
@@internetpolification hi thank you for the reply I know you can buy them high pressure pumps they use on some push bikes that go just over 100 psi so that would be the safest way to blow it up by hand how I know this is my mate just rebuilt his shock on his DR 250 and in his forums that’s the advice is to use one of them hand pumps thank you 👍👍🙏
