To all Honda lovers, yes its not as smooth as DCT, but its not trying to safe fuel as Honda do, to a point where smoothness of shifting turning to a bike jerkiness due to a high gear and low rpm. BMW ASA dose the the thing on the end of the day, it shifting gears for you. And it for sure will take a slice of Hondas automatic gear box pie.
I like to have control over the clutch, with a Quickshifter to use it or not at my will. This looks a great option for people who are fed up of clutches.
Test it at mountain roads. Curvy needle curves in automatic check if the gears are right. DCT sends me with automatic setup in D5 into the curves, so I use only manual + - otherwise too dangerous.
Super video sir, I’ve tried an ASA GS bike too, i was thoroughly impressed and i loved riding it, it was flawless. I think i would love to carry on riding a motorbike in the traditional way for a little longer. Kind regards.
Call me old school. I don't want to re-learn how to ride my motorcycles. And I still perceive that my engagement with the machine and ride is elevated with a "proper" manual transmission and clutch.
Nice! However sometimes it feels so good to ride a bike in its most basic form... just a bike - a speedometer, fuel gauge, normal clutch and gear lever - and does not even have to be powerful... Maybe I'm just old!! 🙂
I agree. I have the last year(2019) of cable throttle BMW R9T, that i'll never sell for that reason. However, when considering the R1300 its already a computer guided cruise missile, and for that purpose I think this ASA might actually be good :D
I would pay extra for BMW not to use Nikasil on cylinder walls and that electronically driven camshift inside the engine. that is just unnecessary. Suzuki used to do it with engine oil and it was fine (the variable cam tech)
Good on people for buying a first generation bike but at least for me i would wait. Its pretty smart manufacturer are recognizing that young people coming into their motorcycle years have no idea what a manual transmission is.

Excellent review; thanks. I have a 1250GS and a Honda ADV 350 scooter with CVT transmission. Looks like I'll be trading both for an ASA BMW. Only decision will be GS or R1300R 🤔
Sure no problem, if you are on an incline at a light in gear it will roll backwards if you let off the brakes, give it just the slightest bit of throttle and it holds you still and a little more and it moves up a little, just like a car.
Outstanding review. This looks really good. I am wondering how it handles at slow speed parking lot U-turns, figure 8's etc. Would there be a tendency to stall out?
I have not tried it yet, but i‘m not sure, if that this is the kind of automated transmission i would want. The concept sounds like a normal gearbox, with somebody else controlling the gear shifting. Many years back, when Collin McRae was my idol, I was sceptic about automatic transmission. My thoughts about Americans unable to drive manual, I am not able to speak out today. I drive automat car last 14 years and next bike - 80% will be with automated gearbox. Yamaha? Honda? BMW? maybe new contender? which will suite me the best?
I believe the ASA will be a transition / intermediate solution to fully automated gearbox demand of gs fans, like hybrid cars... It won't last long, like Honda's dct. Bmw will replace it soon with its own new dual clutch fully automated system. Just my prediction...
It is just an automated manual gearbox which is old technology in semi trucks for years already. My 2012 Iveco Stralis 480 worked the same. This tech only seems to be making its way now into smaller vehicles. DCT on the other hand is effectively two three speed gearboxes, each with its own clutch hence the extra weight and split second shifting speeds. An AM will never be as smooth as a DCT, it is just not possible. So two helmets will always be knocking
@@piotrwiszniewski4179 That is not correct. There is a choice in the dynamic package - if you choose ASA instead of quickshifter there will be an upcharge.

Yeah I don't miss manual.gearbox. But it's also nice change to get back on traditional gearbox bike and appreciate that mechanical feel sometimes. But only for some time. After 10minutes I already miss my dct 😂
My understanding is the Africa Twin has 105 Nm of torque and the GS has 110 Nm. I ride AT so I know what that feels like, but does the GS deliver its torque so differently?
The base AT = 231 then add DCT = 242kg The Base GS = 237 then add ASA = 239.1kg Add Electronic Suspension to the AT = 233kg (cause GS does not come without ES) It's just a numbers thing, my brain automatically goes there...sorry. (it drives my wife crazy) So if you equip both bikes the same and then add Automatic Clutch, the GS is always lighter and lower center of gravity.
Yea, it still has a rear brake, switch to Enduro mode, turn off rear ABS and you can lock up the rear all the time or twist the throttle and spin donuts.
It's not really clear to me, you want to sell the GS and keep the RT, and now you say whether I should exchange the GS for the GS ASA, explain it to us a bit 😉
@@NothingToProve so it’s pretty easy to shift up and down then, as in not much resistance? That’s one of my few complaints on my current 22 model year GSA, every now and then I won’t push up hard enough on the shifter and it’ll get stuck between gears.
You won't have that problem with this, at least I didn't at all. Tomorrow I ride the 1300 GS Adventure ASA, so that will be the second ASA that I ride. What I'd like to feel/see/experience is the same consistent shifting, whether in manual or auto mode.

Sure.. nice cope for a buyers Remorse.
THe BMW ASA is already superior to DCT!
ASA is mind blowing!
Honda has e-clutch now as well as DCT.
So, the riding modes act like different automatic rpm-change selectors? Like Honda’s S1, S2, S3?
yep
30 / 5.000
I'm curious about the consumption
It is just an automated manual gearbox which is old technology in semi trucks for years already.
My 2012 Iveco Stralis 480 worked the same.
This tech only seems to be making its way now into smaller vehicles.
DCT on the other hand is effectively two three speed gearboxes, each with its own clutch hence the extra weight and split second shifting speeds.
An AM will never be as smooth as a DCT, it is just not possible. So two helmets will always be knocking
Thanks, VERY IMPRESSIVE! - "What's the price of this R1300 GS ASA (maybe I missed that in your review?)
Same price as standard model with clutch
@@piotrwiszniewski4179 WOW (nice to know) I thought there would be an additional price
@@piotrwiszniewski4179 That is not correct. There is a choice in the dynamic package - if you choose ASA instead of quickshifter there will be an upcharge.
@@markm9978 I have double check on the BMW website configuration. Whichever option I choose (trophy, triple black, 719…) versions without clutch is for 0 PLN ( polish currency). Maybe in your country is different.
@@piotrwiszniewski4179 Interesting - then it is depending on the country.
Is this making it much less stealable as not being able to just roll it away?
Is it like the goldwing auto that “learns” your driving style and can preempt your shift style ?
No, it's not that good...yet.
The GW can do that?
@@TommyStarwindnot really, it just adjusts to your aggressiveness level.
If u accelerate fast and break hard it'll adjust to that in few minutes and will hold gears longer. Nothing to do with prediction.
At least on my AT
@@Angry-Lynx that the 2024 update to DCT w/ the AT? I heard the new one is pretty solid. And this sounds like it.
Favorite rt versus gs now??
Not a big thing but, with DCT, can’t break the shift lever and there’s no way to mistakenly foot shift while standing on the pegs bouncing through the bouncy stuff.
Yeah I don't miss manual.gearbox.
But it's also nice change to get back on traditional gearbox bike and appreciate that mechanical feel sometimes. But only for some time. After 10minutes I already miss my dct 😂
How is the ASA integrated with the ACC? if a car in front comes to a full stop, will the bike also stop automatically?
No ACC will come to a complete stop, with or without ASA. If you think they will, try it but before you do but get it on video. 🤣🤣
@@NothingToProve it shure does stop with my automatic vw golf
Is there N between first and second gear under left foot?
My understanding is the Africa Twin has 105 Nm of torque and the GS has 110 Nm. I ride AT so I know what that feels like, but does the GS deliver its torque so differently?
It has 149 nm😮
^ what he said. That's almost 50% more torque, with mostly the same weight
The base AT = 231 then add DCT = 242kg
The Base GS = 237 then add ASA = 239.1kg
Add Electronic Suspension to the AT = 233kg (cause GS does not come without ES)
It's just a numbers thing, my brain automatically goes there...sorry. (it drives my wife crazy)
So if you equip both bikes the same and then add Automatic Clutch, the GS is always lighter and lower center of gravity.
@@NothingToProve Thanks - numbers matter!
Any idea how to ride this ASA off-road and do a brake slide?
Yea, it still has a rear brake, switch to Enduro mode, turn off rear ABS and you can lock up the rear all the time or twist the throttle and spin donuts.
With no clutch lever and no foot shifting, what does the left side of your body need to do besides lean and steer?
File for unemployment 🤣🤣
It's not really clear to me, you want to sell the GS and keep the RT, and now you say whether I should exchange the GS for the GS ASA, explain it to us a bit 😉
You want to buy it? Make me an offer! Then I won't have it any more 😂
Regarding your question
go for the ASA
20:12 during this shifting (m mode ) can you dot with throttle ++ or you should not
Sure no problem
Will u sell your current GS for this model?
Yamaha have added auto to their MT09 as well.Times are changing.
Yea, hope to ride that next month!
So question. Is the shift lever still a mechanical engagement or is it an electronic shift.
Electric, no mechanical linkage whatsoever.
@@NothingToProve you doing a video on that one also?
Yes!
I am to old (65) for this stuff. To me, riding a motorcycle contributes to the prevention of dementia. With an automated gearshift, an important part of the exercise of motor skills that riding a motorcycle requires is missing.
