I visited the parents-in-law of a friend when I was in Busan. Since I was the oldest one there, the husband pressed me to start eating even as his wife was still scurrying around the kitchen and bringing more food. I told them I was brought up to wait for the hostess to raise her fork. My friend was pleased when she heard this because she thinks her mother-in-law doesn’t receive the appropriate respect for her contributions as homemaker. I know “when in Rome, do as the Romans,” but I felt uncomfortable with the idea of eating before everyone was seated…as though my hostess were some hired lackey.
If you say it is important to follow Roman law, then it should be followed. In Korea, people are shocked when they see foreigners living at home with shoes. But we understand, that's the difference between cultures. No matter how different your life is, Korean culture has kept order, so respect it.
NO ISTG WHEN THEY KEEP PICKING UP AND DROPPING THE STUPID UTENSIL LIKE HURRY UPPPP I WANNA EAT I DONT WANNA KNOW WHY COUSIN JIMMY TWISTED HIS ANKLE THEN FELL DOWN BY A FLIGHT OF STAIRS AND GOT A B MINUS 😭😭😭
We were taught to wait until everyone was seated at the table but once seated, we didn't have to wait for our parents to take the first bite.
Is this a universal tradition? Waiting for elders to begin their meal first is a must in Korean culture #koreanculture #familydinners #traditions
Almost the same in Asian and Arab countries, this includes hospitality .
Im Mexican, in my family kids usually eat first.Imagine coming back from school, have not eating all day,and still make them wait, nope.
Lived in Korea, know the struggle 😂
Just a normal thing in Indian joint family household 😅😂
