Hi, I discovered shell chords recently (I think through one of your videos, as far as I remember). This is great stuff as they are quite "expandable 😊" and the staple chords you describe here can be considered from "expansions" of them. Thanks for your contribution to jazz guitar éducation.
Hi Marc, I'm a bit confused, at 3:11 in the video where you play the Cmin7 without the 6th string root C but with the 1st string D alt note added is this not a EbMaj7 chord ? I know there can be different voicings of the same chord but not sure how a Maj7 can be a voicing of min9
I use the word "staple" to mean something relevant we will get back too often. For instance, flour is a staple for baking. Milk is kitchen staple. According to Cambridge: " a main or important part of something: Once a staple of men's business wardrobes, the suit is becoming more rare. "
You can get away with the meaning of staples you already know as follows: if I staple every one of these chords to my brain, I will never forget them. And then I can staple more variations on them. 🎉😂 PS In the US we have a chain store Staples. They sell office supply staples, including, of course, staples. 😂

Good question -- context dictates.
If I play xx 8 8 8 11 while a bass player is holding down a C root, we will hear Cm9
;)
Thanks Marc, yes makes sense if someone else is playing the root, but if I'm playing chord melody solo then assume I'd need to play the root as well
Again, it's implied from context@@johnbates9040
Expandable - word !

Nice video. There is only one thing I didn't understand: what is the meaning of "staple" here?

@@jazzguitar Thanks, so I think it fits quite well. I wasn't aware of this meaning of staple (I'm not a native English speaker).
