- Digital Comics are quickly becoming the most accessible option for new readers, but with Marvel, DC Comics, Comixology, and Amazon having their own apps, what's the best for a new reader? I cover this and more in this Digital Comics 101, where all your questions about the medium are answered! (As long as by all, we mean a question I covered in this video!)

Hey , I have question do combined physical volumes contain all comics ever existed from the beginning like without missing any issues. Like from golden age.
Every 6 months or so I consider going digital... and then I buy another omni.
I’m running out of room! Also I have a hard time sitting down and reading an Omni.

@@finalforest7561 basically a collection of an entire run of a comic. Like for example they have a omni for the entire Stan Lee Spider-Man, they’re usually like 1000 plus pages

I’ve enjoyed my time on digital and the amount of marvel titles I’ve read with unlimited has saved me money and shelf space
I find it good to read stuff your most likely not going to reread and if you do read something that you really enjoy you can add the physical to your collection

@@johneith5158 they do have a decent back catalogue but if it’s got hundreds of issues I doubt it would be complete
Great video! Just would like to add that DC Universe Infinite doesn't have any movies or TV shows anymore. They shifted to being comics only when HBO Max launched.
As always, you hit the nail on the head! I think DC Universe now mainly has the comics, as a lot of the shows/movies have gone to HBO Max, but it's still a great deal for the comic library. I'm still primarily a physical collector; however I'm trying now to mainly keep collected editions that have some added significance for me, rather than buy everything physically. All of the subscription services are great ways to save money and space. So really, I like to think I'm a good blend of physical and digital, although starting to move slightly more toward digital.
Making some strong points here. I got on the digital train years ago, but I use it to supplement my crushing desire to read a lot of series, so it helps vet things to buy physically.
I've been looking for a tutorial on how to stretch a digital spine for a while now, and finally the Maddogg delivers! 😂
In all seriousness though, I don't read digital at all, and I will hold off as long as I possibly can. I love having a collection, and I also love interacting with my LCS.
Cheers man, so many guides out there acting like there is no world beyond the US, you listen through an entire video just to find out the service is limited. Your due dilligence in noting the obvious disclaimers is quite appreciated.
Really helpful video! I’m really interested in getting into comics but have been put off for ages as I just didn’t know where to start! Digital is most likely the option for me as storage would be the main issue, the next challenge is choosing which digital platform to view them on - have been thinking of using kindle/comixology but may do monthly Marvel unlimited and then pick up the stray non marvel graphic novel and manga on kindle/comix when they fully join…. Decisions decisions!! 🤯😭

I only read physical but i should really get into digital more even though i prefer the actual comic in front of me. The one good thing is the space it saves which is what i struggle with.😄

I actually got into comics through digital originally, I enjoyed it so much now I have a pretty decent sized collection of physicals and I find a happy medium of switching between just based on the book I'm reading. Something like East of West is something I'm 90% sure I am going to like to I am trying to hunt down the physicals of those. Meanwhile random series from Marvel Unlimited or even DC's app I'm cool with just diving in and seeing if something is good or not.

I like to read in my bed from my tablet so digital it is, but when I buy a comic book , it's usually a variant cover or a first issue, specing for an investment.
Honestly Marcus, this video and the topic is very much raw! The pros and cons for going either physical or digital is the biggest "horns of dilemma" for comic book readers like you and me! Unfortunately, apps like Comixology, Marvel Unlimited and DC Universe should try for country specific buying option.... Not just stick to $!
I get my comics in Omnibus firstly, TPB, single issue and then if not available, digital version, in that order. DC comics Batman for example, particular issues are only available in certain ways so to read everything, I think you have to have a mix of formats, just the way it is.

Interesting video, I have a similar idea in the works.
I love all the lcs's I've been to but im also a realist. Im sure many ppl loved picking up comics on the news rack - and that's when comics could reach a wider audience (and HAD a wider audience too) right now digital and web comics have the largest reach possible (save the sites only for US) i think digital and web comics are great when they embrace new creative formats for readers to experience the story. It also gives a higher push for just reading stories and nothing else.
I'm all about physical, but I want to read Zdarsky's Spectacular Spider-Man, so I'll be doing that digital. Great video! Very informative.

i have noticed non comic collectable shops start selling comics, so i think that's cool, but things are not always organized there and it feels like a job lookin for somethin you like if you are picky like me
I love both aspects, and I hope one doesn’t overcome the other. On the collectible standpoint, I want a physical copy. In terms of its value and the love for the artwork. But as a Comicbook reader, I want the digital version because it’s convenient and keeps your physical copies in pristine condition👌🏽

I bought a tablet a few months ago and I love it. My local comic shop is 2 hours away so it's super handy to be able to buy my comics from my house.
Also a note for anyone buying a tablet for comics, don't cheap out. I bought a €50 tablet a few years ago for general stuff and reading comics on that thing was painful. Pages would take 30 seconds to load after you swiped to the next one, the screen resolution was horrible and you couldn't even read the word bubbles with how pixilated it was. I'd also recommend getting at least an 8 inch screen. 7 inches is way too small and less comfortable to read than a bigger one
I switched to digital. I enjoy having something in my hand, But after a year of reading batman, Hulk, spider man, and a few other titles, I had issues piling up all around me. It was obviously not something I was going to be able to continue Long-term. I'm a reader, not a collector so digitally makes sense.

as a teenager, i started on marvel unlimited after liking some singles i got from my local comic book shop then decided i wanted to read more without having to spend loads
DCUI and is purely comics the videos was there now on HBO Max now and the DCUI is coming to UK worldwide either before summer or in summer and will be roughly £7 and MU is the spotify for marvel comics was waiting for this video!! :)
Definitely gonna turn to Marvel unimited or Dc´s version in the future.

@@MaddoggComics If you're confident you'll be a regular reader, committing to a year of MU only costs $69. $5.75 a month (vs $9.99 for the monthly subscription) for the majority of Marvel's back-catalogue and all new releases on just a 3-month delay? It's absurdly cheap. I've blown through more than $69 worth of digital comics in a single day. Spending money on physical comics still makes sense to me for a number of reasons, but I can't see myself buying digital comics with streaming prices like this.
Amazon have some graphic Novels at crazy prices. They had Death of Superman series for £1.89 each, Batman Knightfall £2.85!! For a price less than a pint can't go wrong!
I found this video because I want to start getting into comics because I don’t know any places that sell comics but I think that i would like to buy comics physically in the future but for now these are great recommendation!
Start with digital and then go physical is definitely the best choice. I started with physical comics and it takes up a lot of space fast. There's also some series that I own that I don't really like and since I bought the trade paperbacks I ended up wasting a lot more money than I would have buying a single digital issue.
The reason I won't go digital is the one con no one has brought up and that is screen fatigue. I look at my cell phone laptop desktop and TV all day long. So reading physical books gives my eyes that much needed break from the cursed blue light.
Considering going digital for the comics I’m not dedicated to. I only have physical copies of Ghost Rider, Hulk, and Thor stuff. The rest can be digital
Came to the conclusion I’ll read digital and buy Omnibus/OHC for the titles I like

I'm not really a collector as I'm only interested in the experience of having some fun in my free time, that's why I really wanted to read digital. However, I hated the fact that I had to keep continuously adjusting the panel's size for all my comics, that really ruined it for me. Even more, the price between digital and printed stuff is very similar so it's not worth it at the end of the day.
I buy physical for collection, and download digital for reading.
I love the Marvel and DC apps. Everything else I pirate. I'd love to buy the actual physical collection but space and me being cheap is an issue
Was actually kin of hoping that some of the apps would be apps to side-load comics I already owned and have converted to digital, .cbz files. But interesting video just the same.
Man since the huge MU July 2021 update, the MU has been the biggest finicky app I have. RIP.

As great as digital comics in terms of accessability for readers, i just cannot read a digital comic. I need that physical copy in my hand. Im not even that hardcore of a collector. But there is something about holding it in your hands, seeing the art work, smelling the pages (yes, i sniff my new comic books), seeing the light shine on the glossy paper. Maybe its the 90s kid in me.
But great video once again. Informative for those who are interested in the medium. And not too many comic channels actually discuss this.
I used to do digital now I go physical. I'll buy digital still if a story is interesting enough to collect as it comes out like King in Black. Or if I just want to try a story out.
@@gabrielcarrasco8414 yeah thats a solid strategy. Prob the smartest strategy too. I personally havent bought single issues since i was a kid, i usually wait for it to be collected in trade paperback or Hardcover. By then the reviews are out and i can see if its recommended or not and worth getting.

I went with digital comics and physical.
A hacker going in and deleting all the comics aren't really an issue that's why backups exist. Might be a hassle for a couple days but the company can just roll back to a previous database and you're all good. The real issue is the companies just losing a license and you not having access to it. Really affects Comixology the most
I absolutely need a tutorial how to get files onto an iPad. I bought iComics and just can't get any of my cbr files into the library, yet alone onto the Pad :(
Try using a cloud storage app like OneDrive to save the comic files and then add them to library with an app like Panels.

I like digital because when there are hard copies that are out of print and outrageous, you can buy them fairly cheaply digitally. Also, you can read them in the dark, and zoom in on each panel. Love that. MY cons are there is no value like hard copies have, and it takes up a lot of space on your device. But all and all, it's a good thing along with physical comics. I grew up a preteen and teen from 1990-1999 and that was some of the best comics in my opinion. Robocop was one of my favs. You could not get every issue as you can today back then. If you missed an issue, you missed it, One of the biggest pros for digital. Physical is still great though. I recently acquired the full 23-issue Robocop ( like I previously mentioned), and for some reason, there is no digital for those. Sadly, there is none for the 1982 G.I Joe either. So physical is still needed not just wanted I think.
How do get digital comics. What are good sites. I want trades. I find it hard because I cannot find the site
Digital comics are the future or comics won't have a future. I would love to see a new-gen comic with animated panels, that would be sick. it would take onomatopoeia to a whole new level and bring the art to life... but they would need to change the format tho to fit landscape displays, I hate viewing Comics on PC just because of the aspect ratio.
I really want to collect physical version but can't because where I live marvel don't sell comics we only have unlimited.

I tried out DC universe in the UK using a VPN and its alright. It's cheaper than marvel unlimited and probably has a better structure and layout to the app and storylines.

I can not use DC Because [my bank has it black listed ]and every time i have tried to use it the bank shuts down my card
The DC service is ment to be coming to the UK in the summer I think but it's just the comics no movies or shows.
My problem with digital is it's more expensive than physical it makes no sense

These services have been life savers for me every night before bed I spend 40 mins reading a few digital comics or graphic novels in bed .cant buy physical my child just ruins them lol
My dad has lots of old comics but I think I would never forgive myself if I tore one of his comics so I just buy them online. I really like the style of older comics but I also really can’t afford to pay 500 dollars for the first issue of Spider-Man lol.

DC Universe is not as comprehensive as it used to be. The shows and movies were migrated over to HBO Max. So now DC Universe is DC Infinite and it's just comics.

DC Universe Infinite is amazing with what it offers but the UI is terrible. It's slow when trying to download apps, it's poorly laid out, and it's a pain to read. It's great for content but horrible in how to access that content
