Abraham and Isaac: A Test of Faith

  • In Genesis 22, God tests Abraham's faith by asking him to sacrifice Isaac, his only son.
To modern readers, this passage feels like a nightmare. Why would God ask Abraham to do that? And why would Abraham be willing to go through with it?
Old Testament scholar Tremper Longman III explores this challenging passage in his online course on the book of Genesis. This video comes from his course.

It's an amazing moment that teaches us that even good things from God that we have on this world can never be placed on the same level as God. The devil will use even good things to keep us away from our relationship with God. This is a test of faith, and love.

Beautiful, powerful, sad and joyful event. Isaac as a christ. G-d provided a substitute for Isaac. But when G-d's beloved Son (Lord Jesus) arrived, there was no substitute that G-d could provide. The sacrifice had to be done. Glory in the Highest.

@@G.TheEnd. there is no Intelligence in your statement or this whole story whatsoever. All it is, is the story of a scared little sheep who cared more about the sake of his soul than his own child. Tell me, what would have happened if Abraham had defied god? Would he have died? A god that decides to test its followers in cruel manners solely for the sake of doing so, does not sound like a loving god. But instead a very insecure power hungry tyrant. Christianity lacks any critical thinking which is why you are taught blind faith. To be obedient and nothing more.

try to think about it this way. If a person like Abraham was alive today and simply tried to sacrfice his son because he had a dream or heard god tell him to do so, he will very simply be either locked behind bars in jail or locked in a mental assylum. An all knowing god surely can do better than make his chosen prophets act like insane people. Its worth mentioning that there is hundereds of cases in recent times, aka the news of a parent killing their children because they heard god tell them to. This simply one point among other things that dont make any sense to me

    • @chriswilliams5109

I agree with you on this. I absolutely struggle with this narrative in my modern western mind. Perhaps, the trouble is with "If a person like Abraham was alive today..." We try to make this story fit our context, when it is an ancient story from an ancient context. I think our first question is better when we start with: "If I was alive back then,..." There was no such thing as science or the idea of mental illness or civil rights or democracy or individualism, etc. Religion was the worldview and you operated by the gods. In this context, to say, "God said" would have been perfectly normal and standard because what the god said was how the people created their societies. Also, sacrifice was very standard in these religions. It is barbaric to me and to our modern minds, but not to ancients. Child sacrifice was pretty standard as well. What made the Israelites different from other ancient societies was God's clear directive against child sacrifice as written in the Torah. Which, then creates a problem: how can a God against child sacrifice ask for a child sacrifice? This seems to be what Tremper Longman is trying to answer. I'm not satisfied by his answer, to be honest. I still don't think he reconciles the contradiction in God. I am open to the idea that this narrative never really happened but is an oral tradition to emphasize the faith of Abraham, the father of the Israelites. It is a mythicized history, as Peter Enns says, meaning, there are parts of it that hold truth to Israel's history and to God, but it is mainly a way to lift up the figure of Abraham. I believe God can use even imperfect writings of the Bible, if it is so, to steer humans toward Himself. I mean, he uses my stupid, imperfect divine descriptions to draw people to him; I've been witness to it. Greg Boyd has a book I'm reading called, "Inspired Imperfection". It gets at this same thing but with a higher view of the Bible than Enns. I am with you, though. This text is difficult and I struggle with it.

What you describe as “faith” on the part of Abraham could just as easily be called “servility.”
The god of Abraham demands that we lose our moral senses and follow orders. That is how despotic totalitarianism functions. I don’t want to live in a totalitarian state now, and I certainly don’t want to spend eternity in one.

hmmm, uh... I'm pretty sure the Bible says Abraham also had another son. His first son, Ishmael. In this story, it shows that Abraham had faith that God would somehow do him, them right, by attempting to kill his son.....scary....but ended up ok with the lamb showing up and God speaking to him. Sigh of relief. But speaking of Faith, what about when God told Sarah and Abraham that they were going to have a child and they gave up and decided to have Hagar and Abraham make a child instead. Sounds like a lack of faith here. I could be misunderstanding or not knowing the whole story. Just trying to understand here. I believe we are all one, brothers and sisters of the Most High. The Angel here signifies the bypassing of the Wall that every human has built from his Karma of birth where he hides himself forever due to guilt and shame and the graceful entry to the inner sanctum of the heart, it reveals the Heaven within us where the Divine Son resides and manifest everything good that we can have without....

To answer some of the questions here: God gave Abraham the opportunity to give Him what He deserves as God, your most precious treasure. The price for Abraham's sins was the blood of his son, as his own life was to end shortly anyways and everything he had lived for was his descendants. God had right to demand blood because blood is life and the price (and natural consequence) for disobedience to the God, the source of life, is life. God had also miraculously allowed for Isaac to be born so his life was especially God's to reclaim.

I’ve always struggled with this story in particular. The most satisfactory answer I got from a priest was that God DID know Abraham would follow through with the request, but needed Abraham to recognize that if he followed Gods word, God would not “lead him astray”. Child sacrifice was a common occurrence for many religions of the time and it could be interpreted as God telling Abraham “no, you don’t need to do that”.
It’s also prophetic, in that eventually God would be the one to sacrifice HIS only son. Many translations say Abraham instead sacrificed a ram, and Jesus is called the “lamb of God “ after all. Still a hard story to read.

If God came to me and asked me to take my son, my only son, to Mount Moria and sacrifice him on an alter I would argue and say "NO". I would remind God what He promised me. How could I worship a god that asks me to murder? How can I worship a god that treats his covenants as if they are toilet paper? ...to be shit on and discarded?
Interesting point about this story is Yahweh was the usual one who instructed Abraham and Abraham did argue back at times. But this story has _ha Elohim_ instructing Abraham, not Yahweh, to sacrifice Isaac. And Abraham seemingly has no issue with the command. Who is this _ha Elohim?_ Does this deity have another name? Molech? Does Abraham love Ishmael more? Abraham silently obeys an absolutely terrible command that every Christian knows deep down is *Evil.* Yahweh does eventually step into the picture and provides a ram saving Isaac. It appears to be a similar story to that of Job in that an _adversary_ (the satan) was the one who actually did the testing. But the difference between Abraham and Job is: Job was a victim and Abraham actually obeyed an evil order.
Would Jesus ever ask you to sacrifice your child on an alter? How would you ever know it is a test? Would you really obey the command from Jesus to murder your child? The story of Abraham's "faith" is more of a tragedy and should not be modeled.

There is no way that a person who actually believes Yahweh's word can believe the story of Abraham and Isaac is historically accurate and also believe the doctrine of justification by faith alone! (James chapter 2; Hebrews 11) If Abraham believed AND obeyed God (and he did) he was declared righteous by BOTH his faith (trust in God) and his works (acts of obedience). It is a travesty to hear men like Tremper Longman who has a good knowledge of Hebrew sidestep clear biblical truth to uphold and promote the false doctrine of Calvinism.

@@joshuabacon4564 I tend to mostly agree with you on this one...
I don't think the author(s) of Genesis viewed YHWH as the _Heavenly Father_ at this point. The early Hebrews most likely believed YHWH was a son of El Elyon. El Elyon was the Father who created a whole pantheon of "sons of god". Deuteronomy 32:8-9 describes Elyon splitting up the nations amongst the sons of God. Israel was YHWH's inheritance/portion. The other sons of Elyon received worship from their inherited people as well. (The characteristic of El Elyon and YHWH merged later into a single God.) The Moabites appear to be Chemosh's inheritance as well. In 2 Kings 3, Chemosh, the Moabites' main god, actually defeated YHWH in battle after the the Moabite king offered his firstborn son as a burnt offering.
Anyways, _ha Elohim_ is the one who "tests" Abraham, not YHWH. _Ha Elohim_ seems to be a _satan_ (adversary) in this story similar to that of Job. It very well could have been _Molech_ but the name of the deity is not given. _Ha Elohim_ could be plural but most like should be translated as a single deity based on the singular verb. Abraham blindly, and without argument, obeys this evil command. He even appears to do it in secret and doesn't even tell anyone he was planning to murder his child on an alter. Did Abraham love his firstborn son Ishmael more? Did he really have no other gods before YHWH? Did YHWH ever accept human firstborn sacrifices? (Exodus 13, Ezekiel 20:25-26, Micah 6:7 ???)
No Christian should model after Abraham's "faith". To have faith like Abraham will end you up in prison, dead, and/or hell.

What is the meaning of Abraham’s sacrifice of Isaac after waiting so long for him to be born? Here’s the answer:
    1. Abraham by conqueror rights claimed the borders of Israel. The Hittites said he was a great prince among them.
    2. The long wait for Isaac to be born indicated the long wait for Jesus to come.
    3. God told Abraham to sacrifice Isaac to prove his faith, but also to display an acted out event that would occur in future.
    4. Abraham was the actor representing God. Isaac was the actor representing Jesus. God said now I know you would sacrifice your son, your only son, just as God would sacrifice his only son, Jesus. Moses wrote this about 1600 years before it happened.
    5. When Isaac got up off the altar alive, it pictured the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
    6. This play was acted out 3 days away on top of Mt Moriah. Just as Jesus would be resurrected 3 days after his death on Mt Moriah, the place where Jerusalem was built.
    7. God told Abimelech that Abraham was a prophet. He foretold the Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, Genesis 20:7.
The ram caught in the thicket was a young male and wore the crown of thorns, the typology of the Messiah, all the animal sacrifices from that point represented, until the Son of God could come.

We now approach the most remarkable act of Abraham's whole life - the attempted assassination of his only son, Isaac; and this simply by the command of God! The analogy between this and the crucifixion of our Savior is readily seen: but of this in its proper place. Having prepared all things necessary and marched within three days' (three months') journey of the place pointed out by God (Aries setting), he left his two servants (the spring equinox and summer solstice) with his ass, * while he (the Sun) and Isaac (summer) went forward. Poor Isaac wondered where was the sacrifice, but his father assured him all was right - that God (Aries setting) would provide it; and so, he did; for he, God, the Ram, was the sacrifice and Isaac as well. "And Abraham stretched forth his hand and took the knife to slay his son" (Gen. xxii, 10). Wonder what the poor boy thought of his pious daddy, when he saw the glittering blade poised above him! But the Lord called, and Abraham looked, and "behold a Ram caught in a thicket by his horns" (Aries was then setting head-first), which he seized and offered instead of his son. Thus, as the Sun went down below the fall equinox, were the Lord (summer), Abraham (the Sun), God (Aries), and Isaac and all the rest of 'em sacrificed and pitched into Hell (winter) together!

THE LESSON OF ABRAHAM'S ATTEMPTED MURDER OF ISAAC IS *DON'T* HAVE BLIND FAITH!
There is really only one morally sane way to interpret the "Akedah" or the Binding of Isaac--as a good example of how people, in an ancient time of savage oppression, scientific ignorance and woeful superstition, thought gods were like and what they had to do to appease them or else suffer their wrath! And how soon it was that professional religious institutions arose to take advantage of the fear people had of the gods whom they were certain controlled everything that happened all around them! But somewhere along the way, some people began to say, "Maybe you don't have to blindly believe what the priests of this or that god are telling you!"
Clearly, the moral of the story of the Binding of Isaac was to obey God without any question, not matter how crazy and contradictory it might seem, even if that the God told you something entirely different before! Your task is to obey and suppress any questions you may have. How convenient! Even today, what do we STILL hear from religious leaders, preachers and teachers in reference to this story--That whatever God tells you, you have to submit and don't allow an rhyme or reason get in the way! And then comes the insidious part, "Oh, so you're not sure what God is telling you? No problem, that's what we're here for!"
In other words, this is how they take control of your life and have you doing the nuttiest things--from giving huge portions of your paycheck to build giant cathedrals to voting for mega-millionaires who only want political power to exploit you for all they can! First, they convince you to "obey God without question," and then, when you can't seem to make heads or tails out of what that old King James Bible (the one with all the thee's and thou's in it) means or, if you were told in one form or another, "Just make Jesus your Lord and let him guide your life, then it will be so much better," only to find out that every time you tried doing what you thought was God talking to you, things went very badly...so you "better just let your pastor tell you what God is saying!"
The thing about the Bible is that it should NEVER be thought of as a book with 783,137 words (the number in the King James Bible) are completely encapsulated messages from God to YOU that never need be understood in any context! That's just like trying to figure out what a giant jigsaw puzzle picture looks like by only focusing on only a few "puzzle pieces" from about an inch away, something the Neo Evangelicals (Fundamentalists) are very prone to have you do!
The lesson of the Binding of Isaac is to NEVER LISTEN to any voice or feeling or bible interpretation that tells you to do anything that is immoral, stupid or both! Use the gifts God gave you (your brain, your reason and the ability to question) to find out the truth in any given situation or else become a slave to religious masters who have only the interests of themselves and their political/corporate allies at heart!

I have no idea if this video supports or renounces the moral character of God, but either way, there is no dispute. If this *actually* happened, which it didn’t, then that makes God a selfish and petty monster completely unworthy of anyones worship or even admiration. Also, GOD IS ALL KNOWING. You can try to apologize for it all you want, the simple fact is that tests are given *only* to find results. If one already knows the results of said test beforehand, then a test is completely and utterly pointless.
