  • Gil Scott-Heron (April 1, 1949 -- May 27, 2011) was an American poet, musician, and author known primarily for his work as a spoken word performer in the 1970s and 80s, and for his collaborative soul works with musician Brian Jackson. His collaborative efforts with Jackson featured a musical fusion of jazz, blues and soul music, as well as lyrical content concerning social and political issues of the time, delivered in both rapping and melismatic vocal styles by Scott-Heron. The music of these albums, most notably Pieces of a Man and Winter in America in the early 1970s, influenced and helped engender later African-American music genres such as hip hop and neo soul. Scott-Heron's recording work is often associated with black militant activism and has received much critical acclaim for one of his most well-known compositions "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised". His poetic style has been influential upon every generation of hip hop since his popularity began.[3] In addition to being widely considered an influence in today's music, Scott-Heron remained active until his death, and in 2010 released his first new album in 16 years, entitled I'm New Here.

When i first listened to this album, i was wondering what could come next after the first song, "Peace go with you brother", which is a masterpiece. And the second song of the album is this one, "Rivers of my fathers". My god, this album is just perfect.

"Anger will never disappear so long as thoughts of resentment are cherished in the mind. Anger will disappear just as soon as thoughts of resentment are forgotten" The rivers of our fathers run deep. It's current is strong and it's depth is cold. The harder I try to swim to shore the deeper I sink. I struggle in vain and there is no one to reach out to. I surrender to it's force.....carry me home to Philadelphia.

@Gustavsnaf Firstly, this comment could've been both racial and personal. You don't know. Secondly, this song wouldn't exist without problems of black people. You are privileged and it shows. Go listen to your people's music and don't add additional hate to already hateful society

When GSH was 'on the scene' I was but a toddler. So I missed out on seeing him live, although my older brother would play his music occasionally. However, my brother re-introduced him to me when I was at an age to appreciate his writing. With Brian Jackson on the keys, this was a household favorite. I still don't know how my brother had his music on reel to reel but it made the music sound exquisite.

This album is truly wonderful. By the time Gil left Flying Dutchman his music had changed. It has evolved through those first three records as Brian Jackson became more involved. Pieces of a Man was great his first great album but this album presented another leap forward and perhaps the best album of his career.

Gill Scott was a genius… simply put it . His music touches the soul so profound , it makes you think unimaginably. It’s a beautiful feeling to connect with your inter soul. His music, his poetic words and music is a storybook experience of the Black experience around the globe . I had the pleasure of seeing Gil Scott many times, mainly at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C. . He was always inspiring, innovative, and insightful. He was the best.
