Sa darating na January 28, 2021ay ika isang taon na anibersayo ng pag panaw ni Joey "Pepe" Smith" ang pambansang Pinoy Rocker. Naalala ko ng unang beses napakingan ang awit ng "Himig Natin" ng Juan Dela Cruz Band sa RJAM radio noon March 1973 at ako third year high school at mahaba ang aking buhok abot balikat. Yun mga kaklase ko meron plaka kaagad dinala sa paaralan para iporma na meron at sikat sila at syempre inggit ako kasi sa radyo lang kotse ng tatay ko ako nakikinig. Naalala ko yun unang beses ko makapanood ko ng live Juan Dela Cruz Band sa Ateneo sa Kaitpunan, QC. mid 70s. Ang sumunod ay naganap sa roof top ng Condo 888 sa Pasig City noon May 16, 1996 at ang drummer noon ay si Edmon Fortuno pa. Parang jamming ng Beatles sa ibabaw ng gusali sa London or Liverpool. Pili lamang ang bisita dahil birthday party. Sumunod ay doon sa Runway 516 Bar sa Angeles City noon March 2003 at dinala pa ni Mike Hanapol si Perf de Castro. Hayop at super wow talaga yun jamming noon gabi. Nandoon din yun GF ni Pepe na taga Baguio. Sa pagkakataon na yun nakapag kwentuhan ako kay Pepe dahil sa kotse ko sya sumakay. Sa 3 oras na drive naikwento nya ang mga nangyari sa kanya at mga banda sa Saigon at Tokyo (Smith Glue and Shinky) ,pagka kulong nya at sino ang mga tumulong sa kanya at iba pang kwento na hindi mo mabasa dyario at internet. Doon naman sa gig ng JDLC sa TGIF sa Makati (2010 or 2012), bago magsimula ang tugtugan si Pepe ay nag tanong, "Ok ba kayo riyan?" Sagot ng audience ay malakas na, "Oo!". Balik ni Pepe, "Pa score naman dyan!". Nagtawanan lahat ng audience, social at masang rockers, kasi nagkabistuhan lahat sila mga "wow pare" pa rin sila. Minsan isang gabi dumating si Pepe sa gig ni Wally Gonzalez and Friends sa Runway 516 Bar noon 2004 at bago matapos ang set umakyat sya sa stage. Tapos bumulong si Pepe kay Wally at ibinulong din ni Wally sa banda ang tutugtugin. Sa unang kalabit ng gitara ni Pepe sya ay seryoso at parang makata nyang kinanta ang makatindig buhok at nakakagimbal na awit ni Jim Morrison ng The Doors. Si Wally at band mates nagulat sa galing at maayos na pagkanta ni Pepe na parang natural high o sinasapian ni Jim Morrison. Ang mga audience tahimik na nanonood at nakikinig kay Pepe sa mababang awit ni Jim Morrrison. Pagkatapos nag palakpak at tumayo ang lahat sa galing na pag awit ni Pepe. Yun mga batang rockers napanganga at nagtanong kung ano pangalan ng kinanta ni Pepe. Ang kantang inawit ay, "THE END". Rest in peace (RIP), Joey Pepe Smith a.k.a JOSEPH WILLIAM FELICIANO SMITH !

watching this reminds me of my Grandfather. i was with him on his last few hours then suddenly he plays guitar like how he used to play (with all the strength and techniques he used to do when he was not sick yet). Who would have though that it will be his last few hours :( God I miss him. :(
