Using Temporary Fencing / PolyWire Splicing Trick

- Using temporary fencing is a major tool when it comes to rotational grazing. In this video, I take a few minutes to explain some of the basics equipment I use daily for intensive grazing. I also show how I splice poly wire once it's been cut.

Brilliant! Simple, to the point and useful, something manufacturers seem to lack. Thank.
Good tip - figured this out after chasing current loss. Multiple wraps around wire are essential - I usually tie the tail to a second wire as well.
Your first knot slipped because it was a granny knot, not a square knot.
Yes I noticed that too. Always use a square knot then the polywire will not slip on the first knot.
another way I have found to make the electrical connection with poly wire a little better is to take a lighter and melt the ploy rope on 3-4 inches of your pigtails ends. All you have left is your bare wire and you can wrap the bare wire around each side of your know. Works great.
I can see how that would make for a great connection but as of this year I stopped cutting the wire. It was getting to where I had too many shorts in the wire that it wouldn't carry much of a load. So, I bought all new poly braid and setup my reels to hang on the fence.
Here is a video on my reel setup ua-cam.com/video/dSWK-sPnXQQ/v-deo.html&lc=Ugw_xf5q2RQ89HrupfV4AaABAg
Great idea. Why didn't I think of that!!! Thanks for the tip.
Tie a square not and it won’t slip.
Then tie half hitches. You get great connections that way as well.
I use rebar for most of my temporary fence pots. I buy it in 20 ft lengths and then cut it into 4 posts of 5 ft each. I use plastic insulators on the posts. With rebar I don't need to worry about the sun degrading the plastic. I can drive them into the ground by hand except when the ground is really dry. In the winter with a hammer I can even drive them into frozen ground. The downside is they are a bit heavy and aren't as fast as the step on posts, but they should last a lifetime. I use both 10mm and 15 mm rebar. The 15 mm is really heavy and can be used as a more permanent fence.
+Keith Rudderham I have roughly 100 rebar stakes like yours. I try to use them in places that I don't have to move them often. Like I setup an alley from the front of farm to the back. It pretty much always stay up. Unless I need to mow around it. The plastic step in's like mine actually work well with frozen ground. I was surprised myself. They are very flexible and light. They do however tangle together very easy. I plan to redo my ATV setup this winter. I want it to hold my materiels a little neater.
Thanks for showing me a way to tie these together had no clue. new run came up short and i thought I was going to have to pull it all and go get a larger spool that would go end to end. This technique worked great , horse had her head resting on the wire starting to push down and it pulsed, stopping her.
Cool, glad I was of help!
Thanks, our fence was not stopping our horses from getting out. I'm getting a lot of arcing at my connection points and wasn't sure how to correct it. I think our horses will give it a little more respect now... lol
use car wax on the fiberglas posts. it has a UV protectant that is supposed to reduce the silvering or splintering. same thing works for fiberglas ladders, boats, etc.
Good to know, thanks!
Lmao it’s JC, great to see you here while I’m building my cattle fence!
@Thomas Stone What kind of fence are you building.....fixed wire or high tensile wire?
@@GrazingAcresFarm polywire perimeter with tree fence posts and a temp polywire to divide up the field and move the cows around
Good video...thank you. Just what I needed
excellent
your video got me to thinking... a figure 8 knot like the ones used for high tensile smooth wire is not only self tightening as you apply more tension but is a good conducting joint because it wraps the wire around itself just as you demonstrated. I haven't tried this yet but it seems logical to me. has anyone tried this? if so, what were your results.
Starting last year, I stopped cutting my poly wire and went and bought more. I now have enough reels of wire to setup several paddocks without cutting the line. Here is how I do it now ua-cam.com/video/dSWK-sPnXQQ/v-deo.html
I will say cutting the wire and knotting it the way I showed made a huge difference compared to just knotting it once.
Very Helpful, thank you for sharing!
Good vocal timbre. Ever consider radio work. Further, I learned from your video.
No I have never even thought about radio work. Is that what you do?
No. And I never have it a thought. But I recognize thought good sound.
Thank you for the info!
thanks for the tip, it sure helped me out.
Thank you that was very helpful!
Surprise, the reason why your knot slides is because you are tying a granny knot, not a square knot.
Great job!!!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
how far apart do you place your line posts
Would the splicing technique you demonstrated, work for poly tape?
Yes. Just remember the more you tie them together the better the connection.
@@GrazingAcresFarm Thanks so much!!
hi, how many cows do you have and how many acres do you need to feed them?
bendikatv Well since this is a small commercial beef farm the herd size is constantly changing but at this time I have 33 head. The farm is just shy of 200 acres. I do not know all the details to cows per acre but I can tell you I would need 50 head at least to keep up with this grass. I like to give each pasture 35 days of rest but only having 33 head now some of them have gone to seeds and weeds. We do not bail hay here which would help keep up with the grass but the grass is not of high enough quality so we buy hay for winter. I hope this helps you and if you have anymore questions just ask.
was wondering what kind fence charger u use?
+jeanne miller I have a video coming soon where I go over my fence charger and fence setup. Keep an eye open for it in the next 2 weeks.
