You didn’t have to like him but Either way he made his teammates and the Sonics better…he’s one of the best to ever play and played at the highest level
I grew up next to Gary on High St in East Oakland and used to watch him cuss his dog out shooting in his backyard. But when I was on my way to college he gave me encouragement (5years older). He's a coach so apparently he still has purpose
Gary said he couldnt play in this soft era if they play 90 rules name the guard top to bottom he couldnt shut down. Him xavier mcdaniel top thugs with oakley mason larry johnson real offical streetball legends
Payton knew who and who not to mess with. Vernon was my spirit animal because if I had been in the NBA, he would have gotten the same from me. If not worse. Never liked him. And guys like him locally got dealt with for being that way.
Threatening people usually doesn't work tho, each person responds to different methods,I learned this when I became a sgt in the army. Plus, you can't threaten military personnel or bully them, that's not leadership.
I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American, male, and heterosexual. (these show where, when and how I grew up, and what prism I view the world through) In 1999-2000, I SO much wanted Gary Payton to get traded to Portland, for Damon Stoudamire and Jermaine O'Neal. That would have helped BOTH teams. It's one thing to have a problem with Shawn Kemp, Ricky Pierce, or Kendall Gill. But, if you even have Nate McMillan, Hersey Hawkins and Sam Perkins bashing you later on (Gary Payton), that speaks volumes about what a difficult teammate Gary Payton was. Despite being born in Seattle, I am NOT a fan of Gary Payton or Shawn Kemp. Hersey Hawkins, Brent Barry, Luke Ridnour, Kendall Gill, Nick Collison, and Wally Szczerbiak are my all-time favorite Sonics players.
Gary isn't a terrible person. He was intense. But being a small guy in a big man league, he thought he had to go Napoleon on folks. Threatening with getting people beat down, killing people's families? Not a reflection of the good people of Oakland. His father dealt with people from the streets. Probably trying to instill hope. Once Gary made the NBA, you now deal with rich people AND folks with different backgrounds. Gary still had that street mentality. With age, hopefully comes wisdom. His skills eroded, had to be humble to keep a roster spot.
I don't like Gary Payton, because whenever another Sonics teammate started to shine offensively, Gary Payton would freeze him out. Hersey Hawkins had that happen, and when Don MacLean finally got a starting spot for the 1998-99 Sonics, and scored well, Payton would freeze him out of the offense. And, his scuffle with Ricky Pierce is inexcusable, and cost us a championship.
His son hates him. He was an asshole. Great player. But an asshole. It your not one of the absolute greats (mj, kobe) you can't be that big of an asshole and get away with it.
