I’ve watched this video about four times building up the courage to take my box blade to my 350/400 feet of driveway. You sure made a LandPlane look worth buying. Still thinking about size for my 1025R. Keep up the informational yet realistic videos, I’ve learned a lot. Thank you both.
Tim, you were worried about the box blade digging in while backing off the trailer. What I always do is lower the jack on the trailer where it picks the weight of the truck up and lowers the back of the trailer
I grew up having to deal with a 2A limestone driveway, close to the length of the one you're doing. Every now and then, we always had to have my uncle bring his dump truck and deliver some more stone. Seeing the tandem efforts of the box blade and land plane could've saved us some money over the years.
I hate to fuss, but at the end, the first thing I noticed was Kristy was setting on the land plane. It was lifted in the air a bit and her foot was in between the cross beams. I was thinking she should not set there unless the thing was resting on the ground. That would be better than resting on her foot. But it was a great video and I enjoyed hearing her comments. I enjoy most of you videos and I guess I could do binge watching if I had time. Love your channel.
That Curtis (Artillian) canopy sure is a great addition. I got one when I purchased my 1025R and it’s great sipping ice tea in the shade while doing yard work...a must for the Texas sun!
Personally I like hearing what Christy is thinking when she is running the camera. I guess I never thought about all the challenges involved for Christy filming these projects. That being said, why haven't I purchased a quick hitch yet??
This video is prefect timing for us. We are using our box scraper with scarfires and I'm not really sure when and when not to use the scarfires. I seem to just make a mess but I guess practise will help ha.
Since he was going to dig the driveway up anyway I'm surprised he didn't unload on the driveway instead of the grass. It is good that it didn't damage the grass.
I have the BB2060 box blade. I have no problems filling the box with the weight of the FEL, 60" Deck, and 70lb wheel weights. Since I do not have loaded tires, yet, I'm using the deck for weight. I also have the hydraulic scarifiers with JD's rear remote.
the first time we get the scarifiers... we set them all the way down and then we understand why its not really usefull because a lot of time, we end up mixing the lower layer that could be old concrete blocks, old bricks, big rocks, or even a fabric!. nowadays, I run the scarifiers maybe 2 inch max, enough to mix everything on the top, I just run several passes. the box blade you got is really nice.
Do you have a nice heavier duty ball head on your tripod? Those are just the ticket for super fast camera angle adjustments. Add an Arca-Swiss quick release plate to the system so you can pop the camera on and off the tripod's head in a jiffy as well.
Story time! I have a 750 foot gravel driveway that I have to maintain. When I got my first tractor (1023E) I got an older 5 foot box blade with mechanical scarifiers. It’s a great tool for this kind of job, but I have to say that I suck fairly extremely at using it. I always seemed to get too much material in the box and found it hard to distribute evenly. I also found that when I lifted the three point to release some of the material sometimes I would lift it too high and dump too much material, creating a hump. If I had to drive over the hump on my next pass it could cause the box blade to dig in. This takes a lot of practice and can be frustrating I’ve found. Like I say I suck at it! Several months ago I bought a land pride gs1548 land plane and what a difference. As you’ve said Tim, the learning curve if way simpler and I’ve found that the finished job is nicer. My land plane has scarifiers and I find it will do anything I would do with the box blade on my property. If I need to move material instead of spreading it, I usually use the loader anyway. Also it was nice to see and hear what Christy has to do while filming these awesome videos, and it shows how much editing has to be done...a little hint as to how much work you both have to put into these videos. So thank you for all the hard work you put into this channel. Over the years you’ve taught me a lot and cost me a lot of money! Lol...now I have a 1025R TLB, and an attachment addiction!
This comment would have been very appropriate for the person asking about getting a land plane vs getting a box blade. I didn't add moving material with the bucket because I don't have a loader on my tractor.
My first impression is the land plane is great for maybe leveling however as far as the finished driveway the box blade does a better job of basically back dragging and sub compacting I use my box blade exclusively on my driveway once a year I do the same thing as far as tearing up the top layer of gravel to make it easier to move around on my driveway and I have learned how to adjust my box blade to dig or just finish and level although I would like to have the top link hydraulically mounted so I can do this adjustment on the go
i have a b 2320 kubota all the attchments are real old, i got quick hitch like pat`s quick hitch, only cheaper,$108.00.only picks up the bottom then you have to attach top link.works fine for me.
I'm a fan of the Ventrac power rake on jobs like this. I enjoy you guys showing different alternatives. Thanks and stay safe, and have a Happy 4th of July.
If you get to try this new HD box blade on Johnny 2, have you thought about adding a Top & Tilt kit? T&T can really make a box blade sing with on the fly center and side link adjustments.
I have a 970 JD set up like yours. And an 18 foot car hauler trailer. I have the same problem with unloading and loading that the box blade scrapes the ground so I bring boards with me that I put under the ends of the ramps to make them not so steep. Great video!
I never did like the floating blade on the back of a box blade or box scraper, one that I had I actually bolted it clear through to the front inside blade and then left the front front blade about 2 inches up and then you can use it for a float... you can float with the box plate also going in circles... blends in feathers it out pretty level and then making a few straight passes afterwards if you have enough width currently I have a 6 foot box blade that’s been amazing I’ve had it around 25 years and still using it on my 4310 John Deere, I also had a Gannon bucket that had would roll over to reverse directions and/or drop the rippers only in the downward position, etc. ... that was back in around 1975.
Great video! I’m looking at getting a land plane but was looking for one with scarfires. So far I found a nice one that Land Pride has but was wondering if anyone else makes one.
Right there is where the Tip and Tilt really comes in handy. I adjust box teeth so it only dig down 5 inches to loosen rock. What happens, teeth pulls up rock, tilt box blade backward smooths out the rock. No rock is pulled along. Got Land Pride 6 foot, 7 teeth, 857 pounds, works like a charm.
You need a 40 horse ...a 5 ft box blade is a load for a 40 horse tractor . I like to pull a fully loaded box blade and I don't use the ripers unless I have alot of dirt on top of the gravel or there are pot holes holding water....good video .
Don’t be worried about the 5’ box blade.I’ve borrowed the neighbors. Its an EIGHT footer. I stripped off the scarifiers, and it pulls it great. It drops pretty fast though. But man it makes short work of everything being twice as wide as the 1025!
Id suggest getting a 2way radio so he can tell you what he's doing and vise versa over a hands free radio setup, seems be good also for safety. Good 👍 videos 📹! Thank You,
So could you not do the same thing with a hydraulic top link and side link, just asking? In my mind that would work so much better for a disc and plow as well, I already have a hydraulic straight blade.
I enjoyed Christy's "behind the scenes" comments, sort of a "the making of..." video. I had never really understood who it is who is working the hardest to make these videos possible :) Thanks
Christy definitely works harder on the videos. She does the bulk of the video work on each episode. I focus on the business relationships. You wouldn’t believe how much time we spend on behind the scenes work.
@@hugostiglitz8465 A long time ago my brother had a barrel someone filled with concrete and put an attachment on. It seemed to work good. I don't know how it lasted with the freezing in the winter.

Thanks for the video, Tim. I was curious how hydraulic scarifiers operate. Nice to see it in action. Have a fine Friday and upcoming weekend. 👍🏽😄. Thanks for the nice video shots . It really shows the planer in action. I was wondering about planer vs box blade and you described the difference right on time. Thanks.
Tim, Enjoy all your videos of the 1025r and 2038r. I have a 1025r and a Land Pride GS0560 land plane. I agree wheel weights are a must for these attachments. Lucky I picked up a set of 50 lb weights for $5 at an auction. Back to the land plane, one thing I don’t really like about the Land Pride is the way the teeth are adjusted. I should have taken a look at a Woods GSS54. Only two manufacturers I found with scarifiers.
Those attachments looks nice and seem to do a great job of finishing the driveway the way the owner wants it and I have a box blade and have the blades for digging removed and can't find them now when I really need them to dig up the soil since I want to level up the ground in my yard again. I have not done it in years and wish I had done a better job of keeping up with those steel tines when I removed them from my box blade.
what an amazing job you guys do every time. Both of you are a great team. working hard in the extreme conditions to bring us these awesome videos. and always having fun.
As far as the camera is concerned have a look at the dji osmo 3 gimbal fitted to your smartphone. These things would make your camera work a little easier
That is a really cool box blade. It looks more advanced than Frontier for my 2025R Johnny. It’s the hydraulic scarefyer that I’m interested in by Tuffline. Good demonstration Tim. God bless you two.
not sure if it has been seen in my comments or not but i try to see the glass half full over half empty but lil john did pretty darn good if you asked me yes he may or may not been a little small for the job but still did do well
You had the right tool with the box blade. You would have been fine without using the digging tines if you had tilted the box front edge down to scrape up the small rocks and then tilt it back to smooth them out. IMHO digging with the tines down was a mistake. Those big rocks need to stay at the bottom. Using the digging tines will always do this. So no need for the land plane. Don't give up on the box blade. I have found it is the most versatile and useful attachment I have.
Steve- I agree with you about box blade and simply using the tilted blade..I would've also had one load of 2a or 2b limestone just to finish it out and make it one uniform color and texture.
hi tim love your vids my boy watches you a lot he is 29 diesel mechanic , i have a 430 with a 4' box scraper love it i have the hole box full at times it pulls it , but it takes a lot of weight wheel and suit case , our problem is not power its traction we have more of a lug tire than you have , i did a 2' deep water way around my boys house and garage worked great love that 430 , boy and i built a front end loader for it, had it powder coated . boy wants to get a 1025r . thanks for the vids tim dean
Yea, sounds like you would enjoy a 2038r!! Don't stop with the 1025r. ...but yes, you would love the 1025r over the 430. Those old 430's are amazing machines, but you would truly love the upgrade.
Nice thing about farm size tractors is you can use the draft control which automatically varies the 3 point depth according to load. We had a Massey Ferguson 65 that was ahead of it's time in this regard in the 1960's. Of course the larger John Deeres also had a different variance of it. Oops, that just dated me.
But going on forward, allows the bucket to be above the attachment on the front of the trailer. Backing on would make the bucket stick way out the rear of the trailer.
I love your videos. Love the camera crews comments also. Sure adds more of a human touch. And the scripture at the end of the videos are awesome. You may not want to say on here but what would you charge to do a driveway like this one. That's what I struggle with. I don't have a land plane or a box blade but would like to get one to supplement my income in the winter. I live in the high desert of Colorado and can usually work every month of the year if I watch the weather. Our ground seldom freezes. I'd appreciate any info you could provide.
After you fill the tires, are you going to put the wheel weights back on again for added weight? Or would it be too much? Are you going to fill the front tires too? Or just the back ones? You should see if you can wire a small fan in the roof to blow down on you while running that.
Hydraulic top link works better! Tip bucket forward to get shanks engaged and tilt back to fill box blade. A hydraulic top link is a must for a box blade.👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I was working in Houston at AB in the early 80's installing siding on their at the time new extension. It was so hot then we had a guy pass out just carrying material from a flat bed tractor trailer to an enclosed trailer. Also in 1980 I was working in Corsicana installing siding on the Kmart distribution center. We had a person quit and other's refuse to work because of the heat.
Tim a 83 inch by 20 foot trailer is typically what I see in my area cause a 18 foot trailer still puts more weight on the tongue of the trailer and sure some people want to be under the weight restriction but is it really worth the reduced steering and having the headlights pointing up more
I'm impressed, we have a 1025R and sure didn't think it was capable of doing that. I use a Kubota L5740HSTC or M8540HDC with a LP HR3584 on our driveways and roads and that little 1025R does as good a finish. We have to have the bigger tractors anyway, but if we didn't...
I like the hydraulic scarifier option. It is somewhat of a pain to adjust them for different conditions. However, I found using my box blade with the “top and tilt” on the 3 point hitch does offer a lot of flexibility even using with the scarifiers. It also helps with final leveling. For final leveling, the land plane is hard to beat. Nice job on the video...could be sub titled “Christy gets a work out!” Blessings!
I misinterpreted the title of the video. I thought the box was going to be hydraulic. I don't know how many people remember tractors like the Farmall 300 row crop tractor I have. It has 2 way hydraulics on its 2 point. I'm not sure if it wasn't the original quick attach. It's not only good for things like a box blade but, when my dad had a flat he could lift the back of the tractor with the 2 point to change the tire.
Always great videos. Thx. I would highly recommend that you get a gimbal (steady cam) for your camera. They are inexpensive and you could easily change shot locations and the image will be always steady and controlled. You could even walk behind the tractor. The gimbal base usually has a tripod mount so you can rest it quickly if needed.
Tim, Try to get ahold of a screening bucket/ drum. See if someone makes one for a sub compact tractor. Like flip screen bucket. - google it. This would be nice renovating driveways that have dirt mixed in with the gravel and want to sift the fines / dirt out of the crushed stone. Find one and make a video PLEASE!
Can the box blade (with the tines up) do the same thing as the land plane? I would guess it might hot do as well but, couldn't it be used to level and spread what you scratched up as well?
Tractor Time with Tim Do you think you could use just a Land Plane to level out the gravel and get rid of grass / weeds in driveway > That is one of the reason's I really have been thinking about buying a little tractor. Along with taking care of snow up here in Wisconsin.

That box blade had a 2nd set of attachment points lower than where you hooked up. If you hooked up to the lower ones the box would have lifted higher off the ground and wouldn't have rubbed during the unload from the trailer. Looks like you would have had to remove your 3pt quick attach though. For that tractor it probably would have been better as then the weight of the box would be closer to the tractor and not put so much leverage weight on the rear (lifting the front end).
I do a lot of driveways with my sub compact. I’ve found that this size tractor is ideal because they can get in and out and turn easily. Plus easier to work around traffic areas. I will say if your too light pulling even with rim guard which I am a lot of times just throw a little gravel in the bucket and ull pull twice the weight without wheel spin.

Agree. Never want to rely on only hydraulics between you and losing a foot or worse in the case of being under a vehicle.

the blades on the land plane are angled to push material one way to help create a crown. A flat driveway will deteriorate much faster.

Vinny with a power rake and a york rake would have been a great tool here also. Thanks for another great video.
Yay! I'm looking for rear hydraulic options for my Gen 1 2025R. I'll stay tuned!
When you are talking at the 8 min. mark, it looked like your pin on the left side was coming out. Great video.
I think it was!
Tim, have you ever thought of getting a dump truck, like a Ford F550 mason dump?
not sure if it has been seen in my comments or not but i try to see the glass half full over half empty but lil john did pretty darn good if you asked me yes he may or may not been a little small for the job but still did do well
You had the right tool with the box blade.
Great information Tim 🇺🇸🚜 🚜
hi tim love your vids my boy watches you a lot he is 29 diesel mechanic , i have a 430 with a 4' box scraper love it i have the hole box full at times it pulls it , but it takes a lot of weight wheel and suit case , our problem is not power its traction we have more of a lug tire than you have , i did a 2' deep water way around my boys house and garage worked great love that 430 , boy and i built a front end loader for it, had it powder coated . boy wants to get a 1025r . thanks for the vids tim dean
Try to back the tractor on the trailer it sometimes helps with attachments dragging.
But going on forward, allows the bucket to be above the attachment on the front of the trailer. Backing on would make the bucket stick way out the rear of the trailer.
Why don't you guys 2 way earpiece communicators? Like for on motorcycles?
I love your videos. Love the camera crews comments also. Sure adds more of a human touch. And the scripture at the end of the videos are awesome. You may not want to say on here but what would you charge to do a driveway like this one. That's what I struggle with. I don't have a land plane or a box blade but would like to get one to supplement my income in the winter. I live in the high desert of Colorado and can usually work every month of the year if I watch the weather. Our ground seldom freezes. I'd appreciate any info you could provide.
Thanks for the video, I understand the effort required to film, edit and upload videos- Brad
After you fill the tires, are you going to put the wheel weights back on again for added weight? Or would it be too much? Are you going to fill the front tires too? Or just the back ones? You should see if you can wire a small fan in the roof to blow down on you while running that.
Artillian canopy offers a fan. We have it..need to install and test.
also if you wanna talk to each other you can look at rugged radios or senna bluetooth headsets.
Tried the Sena’s. Wasted $750 on those!!! We had a video or two early on using them. Didn’t work!
Hydraulic top link works better! Tip bucket forward to get shanks engaged and tilt back to fill box blade. A hydraulic top link is a must for a box blade.👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Hi Tim you and Kirsty make a great team working together
Try Texas heat wave 100 degrees + 10 degrees heat index! I like that Land plane.
Tim a 83 inch by 20 foot trailer is typically what I see in my area cause a 18 foot trailer still puts more weight on the tongue of the trailer and sure some people want to be under the weight restriction but is it really worth the reduced steering and having the headlights pointing up more
Put the bucket on top of the land plane while hauling to save space?
I'm impressed, we have a 1025R and sure didn't think it was capable of doing that. I use a Kubota L5740HSTC or M8540HDC with a LP HR3584 on our driveways and roads and that little 1025R does as good a finish. We have to have the bigger tractors anyway, but if we didn't...
Good job Tim
Need top and tilt on those tractors.
Try putting a go pro camera on the back of the tractor to show the box blade working like the Morgan’s do.
The landplane worked perfectly.
Did you remove the mid arms? I didn’t notice them going down when you lowered the box blade. Thanks
No, just locked them up with the knob
With the cut height knob? Sorry, just got my 1025r a couple weeks ago and still learning it all.
Yes
You both are such a good team great videos
Always great videos. Thx. I would highly recommend that you get a gimbal (steady cam) for your camera. They are inexpensive and you could easily change shot locations and the image will be always steady and controlled. You could even walk behind the tractor. The gimbal base usually has a tripod mount so you can rest it quickly if needed.
I learn soo much everything I watch :) Thx guys :)
Do you have to tie down attachments too??
Dang that is one nice box blade
Can the box blade (with the tines up) do the same thing as the land plane? I would guess it might hot do as well but, couldn't it be used to level and spread what you scratched up as well?
Not as easy.
I want come visit u so badly cause your videos make me want to get one and do what you
Do
Tractor Time with Tim
Do you think you could use just a Land Plane to level out the gravel and get rid of grass / weeds in driveway > That is one of the reason's I really have been thinking about buying a little tractor. Along with taking care of snow up here in Wisconsin.
Yes. Perfect use of a land plane.
@@TractorTimewithTim Thanks!
Tim. Deleted comment about extension kit! Found and ordering now. Any suggestions for a hydraulic top link to use with this kit? Thanks!
Why delete?

That box blade had a 2nd set of attachment points lower than where you hooked up. If you hooked up to the lower ones the box would have lifted higher off the ground and wouldn't have rubbed during the unload from the trailer. Looks like you would have had to remove your 3pt quick attach though. For that tractor it probably would have been better as then the weight of the box would be closer to the tractor and not put so much leverage weight on the rear (lifting the front end).
How do you guys quote jobs like this? By the hour, by the job, by the square footage,???
We have somewhat recent episodes discussing pricing. You can find them via tractoruniverse.com
Do you ever feel like the sub- compact is not efficient enough or doesn't have enough "ass" for driveways?
