I am extremely proud to say that I trained under GrandMaster Steve Mohammed! Started when I was 3 years old (now 37). My mother, father, aunt and uncle trained uner him also. Great and unforgettable lessons learned. He is an amazing man.. #BKF4Life
Steve had the fastest hands in the world I remember going to his dojo on Crenshaw near the train tracks when I was a child(I loved the 80s).............

It must have been by Divine timing that I ran across this video because I probably needed to hear this to keep my spirits up I'm grateful that I was able to cross this path I'm going to play this on a regular basis to keep my mindset and motivated thank you mr. Muhammad
He 77 years old and is in better shape than a lot of 20 year old. He is still lighting quick. You can find him in Atlanta Ga. He has a school near Morehouse College.
Brother Steve Muhammad is a FANTASTIC man with a BEAUTIFUL HEART! The Very FIRST Time a met him. He talk to me for hours. And said that his Door is totally Open for me ANYTIME I want to visit! SIJO STEVE MUHAMMAD is one of the Great Men that have inspired me in Great Ways! The rare moments I have spent with him, spoken on the phone, watched his documentaries makes me realize more as I have said about Men of his caliber,.. need to make a Great Movie about them and Our Story about Black Martial Arts Heroes like them! Why are We waiting for anyone to tell our stories? Let US unite and do this in 2014! This is ONE OF THE GREATS that still lives! Gonna call him now..AS SALAAM ALAYKUM SIJO. Thanks for welcoming into your home and showing me rare things.
Br Hajji I also owe a lot to Master Steve, I came up in the heyday of the black martial arts revolution. All of us should practice some art. I had the fortune to meet Bruce at Black Belt Magazine in the 60's, I went to elementry school a few blocks from there. I will put it in my book one day.
HAJJI MOOR WOW, I envy you,I am in Reno, and I am looking to improve my skills, i found a great Akido dojo. It has been a long long time since i have trained, but i will say, it had done nothing but helped me. Not just on the streets but, in having the inner strenth to beat cancer. The doctors also told me if i wasn't in such solid condition, i would not have been ablt to take the experimental treatment. the training that i recieved during my youth, the Army, and just being a field NAGA works. Please send my greetings to Sijo Muhammad. Please,Thank him for me.
I knew of Grand Master Steve Muhammad through kung fu movies and Bruce Lee actually being quoted saying he has the fastest hands hes ever seen! But this documentary went further in depth into the African American experience in the 60's and 70's martial arts era! I really enjoyed it!
Steve Muhammad is not only a true martial arts legend but very deeply insightful and intelligent. I learn so much just listening to his knowledge of martial arts and I am someone has trained for 12 years. I like his history and experiences he shares.
I believe him good story my grandfather also fought against racism there was a lot of black ppl Like them in the Old South. in certain places black people grab their guns
Steve Muhammad is truly a legend I really enjoy listening to his insight and background. As a black belt martial artist I learned so much from hearing him just speak. Thank you so much sir for sharing your knowledge.
I a'int getting enough of this video, anytime soon. watch it every morning, get a boost. why. The greatness of the Man the , the cause which he stands for. .His words sparkling with the truth . The superb music and the captivating beats.the supreme skill ,brother.
He was in Enter the Dragon. it was a bit part but he was in it. He knew Bruce. I've met him and he's as honorable a man as you will ever meet. Bruce Lee did visit his dojo during that time. They were friends. Just sayin
Steve Sanders / Muhammad is a trash fighter. Watch any of his fights - he couldn't land anything clean, and nor could he defend very well. Very sloppy indeed.
All i have to say is this brother just gave me so much hope in my career as a NOI Muslim MMA Fighter may Allah bless you with the wish of getting more knowledge and to live until your153+ year young man on this earth thank you for your strong words. Salaam
nubian47 yeah he was one of the brothers who did i believe but also GM Anthony Muhammad does.... he is also one of dr mosses powell top students so yes i think he was..
during an interview w/a student of bruce, he said that bruce told him that there were people faster than him & therefore did things to hide his speed in order to compensate. now i know who 1 of those people r that he was talking about. will have to watch footage of steve's tournaments if i can find any on youtube. thanx for posting.
Steven Barnes Wow ! this Man is so inspiring. ..this video is one of the most enlightening videos I have ever seen on UA-cam. Undoubtedly his life story should be put on film for the world to see.
BIG RESPECTS TO GRANDMASTER STEVE MUHAMMED. THIS MAN WAS A TRUE PIONEER AND CHAMPION REPRESENTING THE WAY OF THE WARRIOR FOR THE MILLIONS OF BLACK PEOPLE.
This is all very interesting to hear about.. I couldn't stop watching and listening to you.. Yes now I realize that you were the karate teacher in Enter The Dragon.. Pretty cool man!! Like your fighting theories and insites. Make a lot of sense.
Incredible video highlighting the Black Masters from the past. Although they did not the credit they deserved, they were undoubtedly the people who paved the way for future black martial artists like myself by putting themselves on the front lines. Thank you very much. excuses and thank you for sharing.
Remarkable and charming storyteller and I love the beats in the background some of the best rap songs, I heard Quiet Storm, Ether, Patience, Hail Mary, it goes on.
Maybe the ignorant do not want to be aware of what is real, but those who seek the truth understand they must look at everything as it is. The main problem I see is people are looking at this with tunnel vision, it's not a matter of ones skin color but ones skill, tactics, way of life, and way of fighting.
Husabceuoa Cieabcueoa I am a black martial artist but everyone must adapt to what is real and what works I'm sorry fellow warrior but open your eyes a lot of the stuff people like moses Powell put out is pure junk
Nothing to do with skin colour, I saw Steve Sanders fights, the man was trash. His fights were nothing but a sloppy mess. He couldn't land clean strikes, nor could he defend against them. As much as I - a white guy - liked Jim Kelly, his fights were also a sloppy mess. But I don't just limit that to black fighters of the same era, because Joe Lewis and other white fighters of the day, also fought very sloppy. The only way Joe Lewis was able to win a fight was 1. Having a hard chin 2. Landing a lucky haymaker. None of them were a patch on Lee because they were indoctrinated by style; style is limited, thus cannot deal with what Lee termed 'the what is'. Yes, it's true that Lee thought the world of many boxers (black and white), but it was largely slick boxing footwork he thought was so great.
Excellent vid! I have to say that his hand being in his face and in the camera is a bit distracting, but I can ignore that to listen to this great fighter.
I'm a little disappointed Mr. Mohammad didn't mention his Master Instructor Chuck Sullivan the man who taught him his skill sets and always treated him as a brother in the martial arts.
These guys are true legends. Humble in their greatness, you cannot fail to be inspired by such honorable people. They should make films about these people to share their stories, not made up Kung Fu movies.
Was he a black belt and instructor at Ed Parkers Kenpo Karate School in LA. Is he the one that Tom Gow caught with a spinning rear kick and knocked out? I think it happened in the mid 1960s.

This brotha has good knowledge of fighting skills as you can see when he teaches at the end of the video. Awesome documentary on Grand master teacher, Sijo Steve Muhammad also known as "Pops" to the L.A. black youth of the 1970s and 80s.
When he speaks about fighting and does those movements, you know he can still kick some ass! Subhanallah!

Outstanding video I have been a follower for the arts all my life. I feel blessed to see a time were men like this stories can be told.

You can see a lot of Sijo's finger joints are healed improperly. Most likely from the early days where you'd grab onto a gi and punch away.
