  • I enjoyed my first real cold camping in December at Burr Oak State Park and found a great secluded site surrounded by water. The following day I found a good disperse campsite in a secluded area as I overlanded and explored the area. Had a great time and good food and experienced snow too! Hope this motivates you to get out and overland and camp.
    Items you can purchase that I use from Amazon:

    Ground tents are the only way to go, we were camping in the desert in State campground, next to us on each side the two campers took their tents out in the desert away from the campground, some others down the way were stuck with Top Heavy Tents, they were stuck next to the road and traffic

    Coincidence. I stayed at campsite 21 last May on a Sunday night and was alone in that section as well since it is non electric. A Cardinal pair did come in close and take some peanuts. I always enjoy your videos when you break from camp and explore/overland.

    • @rubiconmatt
      @rubiconmatt  Рік тому

      Wow, That is cool about the cardinals and surprised in May you were still alone. I will keep checking that place out. I actually went back when it snowed right after Christmas and am putting that video together now and found some cool other dispersed sites while overloading.

    • @jrmorgan1212
      @jrmorgan1212 Рік тому

      It is amazing how the Ohio state parks clear out Sunday afternoon, especially the non~electric sites. I take a few Mondays off each April and May and most often I am the only one there. Burr oak SP is nice as that section is mostly, if not all, non electric.
      I don’t consider the nearby burr oak national park campground I have seen in your early videos because it has road noise and hardly any flat spots for my RTT. The spot you picked in this video is awesome. The dispersed site you found while Overlanding does intrigue me, I would just have to stay at the pull off with my RTT. Keep up the exploring!

    Found your video looking for reviews of the gazelle in cold temps. I'm going with a bunch of friends next week. We are expecting a high of 3 degrees and I'll be bringing 3 buddy heaters and my diesel heater. Hoping my gazelle will hold up to that. Thanks for the video and God Bless you!

    • @rubiconmatt
      @rubiconmatt  Рік тому +1

      Kevin: You should only need 1 buddy heater for 3F. but if you do not have a good sleeping bag then you may want to use two. But I have used it down to 16 degrees with one buddy heater. I normally run the buddy on low and when I put it on high it improves another 5-10 degrees in the tent. Not sure if you are going to connect then to larger propane tank or use the one pounders. But if you use the one pounders, I am getting four hours on low and two hours on high. FYI. Enjoy!!

      @rubiconmatt I do have a -30 bag but usually sleep best when my environment is about 60-65 and sleep outside the bag. Always leaves me the opportunity to zip it up and be just fine in that extreme in case the heaters fail on me.

      @rubiconmatt  Рік тому

      Brandon: I have to admit, some of my videos I show exactly where I am at on the Gai GPS map and others I do not. For instance the dispersed camping I found on this trip, I did not share because I want to camp there a lot! :-) But if you explore and use Gai GPS app, you can head out and find there areas. But if you want some areas, I recommend look up Wild Cat Hollow Trail head (in Wayne national forest). And then start driving around the trails in that area and keep going and you will find similar experiences. Thanks for watching!

      It is a one pound propane tank that screws on the side. You can buy the tanks at Walmart and any kinda outdoor place. It takes two tanks to get through the night as an example. Thanks for watching,

      They last about 4 hours on the low setting, which keeps my tent at 45 degrees normally when it is in the 30's outside. I have never used the high setting except for when you start it up.

      Great question, Yes, I have been at a trail head and was the only one there and had a pick-up truck pull in and start asking me questions. I had lots of lights in their faces, and talked in a strong manner to demonstrate I was not afraid. Another time someone drove up to my site and I did the same thing. I always have a game plan and practice so if a person came that had evil intent I would be ready. I will never know if these people that stopped by did or did not have an evil plan, but I made it as uncomfortable for them so they would see I would not be a good target. Plus we have the Holy Spirit!! Lots of Power!!
