The Lost Forefather of Counter Strike - Action Quake 2

  • This was a total conversion mod for quake 2 that basically set the groundwork for Counter Strike due to some of the existing elements such as locational damage and recoil, as well as a modern day setting. Two of the creators
of Counter Strike had originally worked on this game.
The Action mod would then get two other sequels, one for Half Life and another for Unreal Tournament. Action Quake 2 is still a fun multiplayer game that was quite unique, and there really wasn't anything like it at all
in the 90s, at least until Counter Strike came out anyways.
Nowadays not that many people play it anymore or remember it even existed, aside from the veterans of Quake 2, the people who still play Action Quake 2 and the people who had created it in the first place. But the brainstorming of Counter Strike within this games development would be crucial to the eventual realization of it once Half Life came out.

I literally played AQ all day, every day since I first got it in like '98. Stopped playing in like 2013 when I got kids. Used to play on European servers, even had a somewhat big server myself.
My dad always wanted to newest tech stuff, so we were some of the first in Norway to have cable internet instead of ADSL/modem, so we had like 70ms ping. A friend of mine worked at the cable-network place, so he fixed a CS and AQ server on site. Still, I'm pretty sure I spent more time practicing strafejumps than actually playing against people.
Made a bunch of strafejumping videos, played in many and WON 2 tournaments. Had great times with friends and clan-members, both ingame and on mIRC.
Thanks for helping in making this, it really was a BIG part of my life for a while. To put it like this, if I were to ever get tattoos, I'd get the Konoha symbol from Naruto and the AQ2 logo in red text. That's it. Those were my two biggest influences during my teens so if I were ever forced to take a tattoo, those would be it.
Cheers all my AQ2 brethren. It was a beautiful time. A great community, and just pure awesomeness. I f**king love this mod.

Great video. I remember following the Quake scene in the mid, late 90's, a veteran player of both Quake2, CS and Action Quake 2, and I always tell people that right before CS became popular people played Action Quake 2, but I didn't know that Gooseman was behind Action Quake 2 as well, it all make sense now. Action Half-life was fun as well, and I always tell people today that I think a new Action game would make millions if done correctly, it's such a unique concept that would stand out in the gaming industry today. Thanks again for this great video, excellent commentating.

The most unique feature of aq2 was that bullets didn't despawn, gunfights could often lead to killing each other.
Another really fun mod to q2 was Gloom.

AQ2 is the grandaddy of them all , and had great ideas , some of which havent been bettered , or even implemented in todays games ,
but " gunfights could often lead to killing each other."
isnt really a unique thing in FPS 🤣🤣😜😜😂😂

Sending people flying off a cliff and getting proper credit for it was always a nice touch too! That and point-blank gibs with the handcannon. Jump kicks. The movement in general in Q2 really lets you fly around the maps!

Thank you for the trip down memory lane. AQ was an incredible community of gamers. I hope all the North American homies I played with are doing well today. Also a big thank you to the folks running the public servers we frequented and the team running OGL for dealing with our squabbles.

In 1998 I first played this mod at my friend's garage LAN, the plan was to play other a variety of games but when we started playing AQ2 that was all we played, sure we played CS as well but mostly just to take a break from the frantic pace of AQ2. I really loved this gaming period of my life, even when Quake 3 was out and that was crazy fun for 2 years we'd compete in tournaments in both games until people felt AQ2 was 'outdated' even though I still argue it was the most skill based. I stopped playing in 2006 because the community in my country had moved completely on to CS.

Played this before CS. One things is before rounds you could buy loads outs like in counter strike. One thing I always missed while playing counterstrike were the slippers. You could wear them to silence your footsteps.

Won't ever forget AQ2. Always found Q2 multiplayer a little slow going so stuck with QW until AQ2 came along. So fast and great team play, loved the throwing knives and bandolier combination, very satisying taking out the remaining opposing team members with it as the last survivor.

I've been playing a lot of "The Finals" lately and had this itch that I'd played this before and today it hit me, AQ2. Found this video looking for footage and yeah, The Finals is definitely an evolution of what started in ActionQuake. Haven't thought about that mod in years, but it was so damn good.

Played a lot of Q2 multiplayer in the day but not this conversion though I do remember seeing a lot about it. I do however recall a simpler weapon mod for the original Quake that was one of if not the first to do realistic firearms with reload controls, the author was Goose or something? I always wondered where he ended up, considering many of these guys wound up getting jobs in game companies.

It was so good back in the day - so many maps to choose from and plenty of players playing whichever was your favourite , nearby with good pings too . no antilag needed . I guess there just wernt that many PvP games back then.
I played it for years , eventually numbers dwindled and everyone seemed to want the desert2 map all the time which i got bored of .

  • @joel6376

I remember playing this on LAN. The thing that stuck out most, besides the obvious, was the gamemode it defaulted to (I guess? I can't imagine we changed it).
There were no set item spawns, weapons and gear spawned in seemingly random locations. Alone this is boring.
However each weapon on the map was unique. The shotgun was spawnned in, and when a player picked it up it never repopped. In order to get the shotgun the other players must kill the player that had it. When the player died the shotgun would just stay on the ground until someone else got it.
This was inventive and interesting, and led to weapons being quite valuable with 5+ people running around the map. It also led to the start of each match being slower as players explored for the different pickups.
I even recall this setup being explained by action movies where the fighters move around the area scavenging weapons as a fight progresses.
I don't think this mode or setup was popular as every competitive video I have seen over the years has players spawning as teams like CS.
I also remember attending a small LAN where on guy played competitive TF (original) and had a match on LAN day. Luckily we had broadband for him to use. Watching was interesting as both team was almost 100% soldiers, different to pub.

Cool video! I worry that the "ancestors" of a lot of modern games are disappearing from the records. Like, I'm pretty sure the original 2Fort was itself inspired by a Doom map laid out pretty much the same way, but no one talks about it any more so finding info is hard.

It's always interesting to find that there was an even earlier source of inspiration for a beloved game. I've been finding the unknown stuff more interesting to talk about than the stuff everyone has already talked about.

Reaction Quake 3 was released. "For every Action, there is an opposite and equal ReAction." was their tag-line. Pretty nifty. But it kind of flopped, but it was a valiant effort. They even had tournaments with live commentary. Very well done, but people just didn't like it. They wanted the original, no one cared about newer graphics. The gameplay wasn't 100% on point, so people didn't like it. Everyone knew every single pixel of the game, so changing even the smallest thing was a big issue.
They even went to QuakeCon to show it off, apparently they had a blast :)
For people who never tried AQ2 before, RQ3 might have been better. But convincing the oldskool gamers to swap game, that was hard..

10-4 the game itself is great and all but these "pickup games" are ruining it for those players who would just like to hop in, join public server and play a round or two. One thing i always liked about this game was that it took me literally 5 seconds to get in the game and start playing, it wasnt serious, just pure fun, no1 cared, play however you like, ssg rushing is fun. We dont have enough players that's true, but whenever you finally get a good public server game going on, some1 from these "pickup games" comes and spams for ppl to join discord or whatever the fk they say. Its too much for new players and its annoying and sad and it makes me rage. -qp

I like this game, BUT the bots are a b*tch (there accuracy is literally aimbot) and having to heal like every time you got shot! (Which is instantly)
    Also don’t say “skill issue🤪”

    • @SackoYT
      @SackoYT  5 місяців тому +1

It's generally best to start somewhere in the middle when it comes to difficulty selection for bots. Having decent ai that reflects the multiplayer is hard, but it's better than nothing.
Aimbotting on the highest difficulty is pretty common in games with bots, I wouldn't worry too much. Just use it to practice if you can't find any matches online.
