  • Meknes is known as a wine growing region of Morocco. It has a number of wineries and also is a tourist destination, because of its imperial past and a number of historic sites. We drove from Azilah on the toll roads to Meknes passing by agricultural plantations.
Our first stop, was the Hacienda of the Storks (Hacienda des Cigones) which is located between Rabat and Meknes. The winery is family owned and operated by a husband and wife team. Jalil is the wine maker, and the grandson of the founders of the winery. Wafae, provided the tour of the winery, and wine making process. The winery was founded in 1951 by the grandparents of Jalil.
Jalil and Wafae, welcome overlanders and travelers with caravans to park overnight at the winery at no charge. They have comfortable restroom facilities, including a hot shower. Wafae, also prepares a wonderful tajine dinner! We stayed one night at the winery. Guests who stay after touring the winery are encouraged to purchase a bottle or two.
Next stop Meknes---a city known for its imperial past, with remnants including Bab Mansour, a huge gate with arches and mosaic tiling. Sultan Moulay Ismail, made the city his capital in the 17th century. Campers can park overnight within the old medina that has 24 hour security and is very quiet. We spent one night and loved the great food at the night market.
    Enjoy!
