    Joseph! I just discovered your channel. So much of what you are communicating here echoes what I seek to transfer to my students. I will be sending them to your channel to provide "authority" to the message I'm delivering. Much love for your posts. You are lifting the bass community!

    It is really enriching to watch go through the excerpt whilst you share your thought/preparation process. Really good stuff! Indeed it is awfully difficult to talk and play yet you do it with ease, (I always sound as if having a stroke!) Thanks for the insight!

    Oh this is fantastic. I don’t play any more but if I did this would be invaluable.
    Also at the beginning when you were doing little interjections reacting to the sound your bow was producing, I was reminded of Bernard Purdie, in the best possible way. :)

    Dear Mr. Conyers: I wish one of the Double bass players of my much appreciated BERLIN PHILHARMONIC would give us such a interesting deep directly look into the life of a top of musicians like You, staying alive as a "real human being"! AWESOME and THANK YOU!!!!
    P.S. A member of one of the worldwide top orchestras has to use at home a PRACTICE MUTE?????!
    JESUS, what a sobering world!

      Haha! Yeah, it's sad.... But, I really do it out of respect for my neighbors. I generally practice at the concert hall, but it's been closed since the pandemic began. Unless I'm making a recording like this one, the mute stays on, unfortunately. I live in a quiet building so it's the least I can do. I will say, I wrote four of my neighbors apologizing, and three wrote back basically saying, "Practice more!" But the fourth?? 🤔 Glad you're enjoying the vlog! 🙏🏾

    i'm always curious about string height. do you have any idea what yours is? or do you just adjust whenever you feel like it?

    • @josephconyers7854
      @josephconyers7854  4 роки тому +4

      It matters the music I'm playing. If I'm going to be pounding it out in Orchestra, then my strings will definitely be higher. However, if I'm preparing a Bach Cello Suite, I'm likely going to desire lower strings for easier execution.

      @@josephconyers7854 that's what i figured. it just looks a mile high from this angle! as always, i love the bite you can get out of the notes/bass. you almost make me want to play upright again!

    Hey Joe!, I love these videos and really appreciate them. I play the bass currently in highschool for my schools chamber, and i was wondering if you have any advice on getting better tone on the E, A, and D strings when you are playing higher notes on them, for example playing a b on the d string or especially in thumb position on any string including the g string. For me it sounds kind of empty and i was wondering what you would recommend to get a deeper sound. Thx, Love the great work!!

    • @josephconyers7854
      @josephconyers7854  4 роки тому +2

      Based on what you've asked, it sounds to me as if you might not be maximizing bow placement when your fingers are in higher positions up the string. As you get higher on the string, the bow placement will have to be closer towards the bridge. If you keep the bow in the "regular" place to play when you're in the lower positions (while your fingers are actually in higher positions), proportionally, it would be like playing with your bow a few inches up the fingerboard. There is always an optimal sounding point on the string, and the sounding point moves closer to the bridge as our left hand moves up the fingerboard. I'd examine this first to see if it begins to solve the problem. Of course, the more acclimated you get to doing this, the more you'll do it without even thinking. Let me know if that helps!

    • @josephconyers7854
      @josephconyers7854  4 роки тому

      Yeah! I don't know if it makes a huge difference to them, but I play mostly with the mute on when I'm not recording. I just feel bad that folks have to listen to my practice! Our concert hall is closed to ALL traffic. 😔
