    O my gosh! That's incredible! I barely got one in bloom in my windowsill, and on where the video was done, an amount naturally blooming.

    Absolutely gorgeous slippers! Appreciate your explanation of how the travertine formations provide the ideal habitat for these orchids.

      ***** Sorry, missed your post. I don't grow many Cypripediums since it is too warm where I live (southern Japan), but I do have a smattering of terrestrial and epiphytic orchids. I sell a few from time to time within Japan, but have no plans of selling to other countries since it is too much of hassle to do all the paperwork, etc. Sorry!

    wonderful video !! I'm thankful you did not get hurt. I would hate to see the end of your videos. Here in the states I often see C. aucaule in very thick areas of pine needle. You spoke in general about the growing conditions of Cyps. It seems they are either adaptable or have different needs as far as growing conditions go.

    • @botanyboy1
      @botanyboy1  10 років тому

      I'm still in one piece - then again I travel to plenty of places that could be considered a bit dangerous in the hope of seeing something new.
      Lots of variation in the needs of Cyps, but don't let what you see in the wild fool you since there exist very fine balances in the natural conditions you are not likely to replicate in the garden. Generally, Cyps like free draining, nearly neutral composts in partial sun. They also need continuous moisture, long, cold winters, and cool summers. C. acaule is special in its requirement for truly acidic compost, no higher than a ph of 4.5 - unusual for the genus.

      A wonderful and informative video. Thanks for sharing. What sort of time of year do they tend to flower at this altitude?

    • @botanyboy1
      @botanyboy1  10 років тому

      Glad you enjoyed it. Virtually all the Cyps we saw in flower were growing from 3000-3500 meters elevation. We saw them in flower starting on June 20-30. See the Cyp photo gallery for many more pictures seen on the trip. Those growing at lower elevations (different species) were already out of bloom.

      botanyboy1 hi, great great video. What species of trees are there above these c.tibeticum and c.smithii. i am just preparing bed for them in my garden and i want to choose suitable acompanying tree. Thanks

    • @botanyboy1
      @botanyboy1  10 років тому

      I'm glad you enjoyed the video. There was little canopy over the plants, but conifers were the main trees present, with Picea, Abies, Larix, and Juniperus species being dominant. These plants grow in very open forest or even open gravel slopes in Sichuan. Good luck with your plants!

    • @botanyboy1
      @botanyboy1  9 років тому +1

      wonderlen Very likely you can grow quite a few Cypripediums in you area. A number of them have been grown in zones 2-3, for example C. candidum, C. parviflorum v. makasin, C. parviflorum v. pubescens, C. macranthos, C. reginae and possibly even C. kentuckiense. Two species growing in Canada/Alaska require cold conditions - C. guttatum and C. passerinum. They should flourish in your environment, so don't give up hope!
      Glad you liked the video.

    nice video! Is this orchid Tibeticum rare? like limited species

    • @botanyboy1
      @botanyboy1  8 років тому

      +Arif Khan (KHANAGE) Yes, this species is rare, being found only in SW China, far eastern Tibet, and the easternmost end of the Himalayan Mountains. Where it is found it can number into the thousands, however, this makes it vulnerable to collectors. Most you see online for sale have been collected from the wild.

    • @ArifKhanKHANAGE
      @ArifKhanKHANAGE 8 років тому

      botanyboy1 Yea i though so that some are collected from wild as Ive seen it on eBay. There is another site located in Belgium where they propagate rare orchids like the British 'cypripedium calceolus'. I'm just waiting for it to come, so I can start re introducing the Native species. I did ask questions about the strain if it was hybrid and that it comes from the same DNA family. They conformed it was 100% real deal. Hope so! I would love to try and introduce Tibeticum in the welsh mountains as i think it would do well there. But this spices sounds complex. Best left alone. thx for feedback

    OH MY GOD THIS IS UNFATHOMABLY BEAUTIFUL! I BEG YOU TO USE THE STABILIZE OPTION IN YOUR "enhancement" VIDEO SETTINGS!! THIS VIDEO WOULD THEN BE SMOOTH AS GLASS! NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC QUALITY! I hope to hear back that you can do this... this video is absolutely beyond belief beautiful! I hope you can do it! You will be astonished at the difference!

    • @botanyboy1
      @botanyboy1  9 років тому +1

      onceIhadalove I'm glad you liked the video. As for the stabilizer tool, I won't use it because it distorts the video to the point that my brain hurts! So, it stands as is.

    • @onceIhadalove
      @onceIhadalove 9 років тому

      You obviously don't know what the stabilization effect does. Not at all does it distort the video. It is the EXACT same process used in National Geographic nature videos. You are mistaken and rather rude, too. So the shaky video continues. Too bad.

    • @botanyboy1
      @botanyboy1  9 років тому +1

      onceIhadalove No rudeness implied. Sorry if that is how you read it.

      onceIhadalove calm down and stop throwing a temper tantrum- he really wasn't rude- you're reading into his reply, likely because you are too fragile to be told no.

    My friend just bought me C. Reginae I have no idea how to care for them. Can they be grown indoors . Or are they best outdoors? I live in Medicine Hat Alberta . We have hot weathers in summer and really cold in winter. My backyard doesn't have much shade , most of my plants are indoor, what are your advices?

    • @botanyboy1
      @botanyboy1  7 років тому

      Actually, I think your climate will be very good for this species. They will not grow well indoors. Don't worry about the hot weather you get, it is fully within the tolerance of this species. This species needs some sun to thrive, but if you can protect it from midday sun (say 12-3pm), that would be best. It also will grow well on a north facing wall if there is no tree cover above. They should do well in your native soil I think. Make sure the plants don't ever truly dry out, but don't feel like you need to keep them wet either. To read more about this plant, please look at this page from my blog: botanyboy.org/cypripedium-reginae-the-showy-ladys-slipper/ Toward the end of the article is all the cultural information you will need. Good growing! Tom

      No locations were given for these plants except Huanglong Valley in northern Sichuan, China. That place is visited by untold thousands each year and all the orchids are in full view by visitors that have to walk on wooden boardwalks over the limestone formations on which the orchids grow. I'm sure some plants are stolen from there now and then, but most are collected from less visited places. I was lucky to see a number of these places on my trip to China, and I have kept them a closely guarded secret.
