      To expensive,battery too small ,water will enter the frame on the "thermogate" and that shock looked like it was sitting way to low in its travel on the little hill descent.

    Demoed the 4500€ spec'd 2019 OneSixty e-bike a couple of weeks ago... Definitely the best e-bike I've ever ridden, but also probably one the best mountaibikes overally too! Rode a 53 km and 800 elevation meters trail/enduro ride with one charge, the bike was super fun and felt very light and nimble. I'm 45 YO, almost 25 years in the MTB, currently on a 2018 SC Bronson C. The future is bright for the e-MTB :)

    Like seeing your vast knowledge on bikes and riding skills. You give us quick tidbits to get a good feel for the bike. Saying that honestly, I'm also honest that I'm an old man that takes fairly easy trails slow and easy with my eMTB. Just want to get exercise, get outdoors, enjoy the woods and go over things. Thanks for the vids. You're very good at it.

    Seat dropper isnt for different riders heights, its to lower your seat when theres a need - downhill, and put it up when you need to cruise.

    Gee they charge a pretty penny for Meridas in the UK! And the old one was better spec'd with DI2, and Saint brakes. The old one was probably the most popular ebike here in Aus. partly because they were cheap compared to other less spec'd bikes. The only thing they were missing was a 180 fork and 29 front wheel. To be honest maybe youd be better sticking a 29 X 2.6 on the front of the old one and it'd be pretty simillar to the geom. of the new one. It'll be interesting to see what they charge for the new one here.

      Currently looking at my local which is clearing out 2019 model for $6k AU. Might not be as pretty as this one but assuming this goes at least 8k in Aus, is the bike 25% better than the old model?

    • @BarryJTaylor
      @BarryJTaylor 5 років тому

      @@LL-tx2kj get the 2019 for 6k. Bargain!

    • @derekharper6031
      @derekharper6031 5 років тому

      @@LL-tx2kj yep buy it you won't regret it. Looks aside, I think some components are lower spec on the new model. I also cannot think why the hell they would place the charge plug at the low point of a bike where water is likely to collect and enter the charging system!! Not sure how long that battery tool will stay put in the axle either. Some great features in the new model but not worth the extra $"s IMO

  • @TheBikeDoctor79

    Great explanation of the new Merida e160 and it's a wicked looking setup. I am afraid that with it's starting price of $6,699(AUD) that it might have priced itself out of the "new to ebike purchase" market. Sure it has a carbon front end, however my fingers are crossed for an alloy version to come out later, which would drop the price by about $1k I would think. It's still very important to encourage people to jump into the ebike market with a sub $5k(AUD) price point. I've got a first generation e160 e900 and totally love it, but not sure if I'm ready to jump onto the newer version.

      @derekharper6031 5 років тому

      Yep never pay the RRP.. I to have the 2019 so great to see what they have done with the new model. Improvements in some areas and cost savings in others unfortunately to bring the overall spec down. One of the reasons I bought the e160 900e was the price for the component spec. Dropping from saint brakes, dropping from Di2 to me is a step down. That said the xtr spec isn't crap either. Thank god they ditched the old dropper that's a huge plus. Shocks and forks maintained excellent. Frame does look better and more integrated with the motor and battery so that's a step forward. Not sure about the battery fitting system or battery model (that makes 3 shimano seem to make now). Weight reduction never a bad thing either. Not sure on the mixed wheel sizes... Narrower tyres front and back is an interesting shift and would be keen to know the thinking on that change? Cost and wider tyre availability perhaps? Same motor and battery capacity. So any reason to upgrade yet for me I don't think so :)

    Great looking bike, but can hear the Shimano motor noise over Steve talking. I would buy this bike if the motor was quieter - have ridden the Previous model, Trek Powerfly & the Spec Turbo Levo, Still think the Brose motor is the Benchmark if you like near silence on a long ride through the bush.

      Steve C was in direct contact with Commencal over a business enquiry and was told the 2020 bikes would be integrated- I don’t know if that means the whole range or just a select few. All you really need is a new 29 X 2.6 front wheel and tyre. Although I would likely have gone 27.5 x 2.6 front and 26 x 2.8 rear by just re-lacing the back hub to a 26 rim. Just about all my bikes have been like that for about 5 years now. Just not a fan of 29s too "roady" for me lol.

    The 3 modes of assistance are not "fully" customizable through the app, only BOOST and TRAIL. ECO is only customizable via cable and PC, and we're all WAITING shimano to uptade the app or whatever they need to let us update to 4.7.0 version which allows ECO mode to be customizable. So, we'll see how much more they're gonna make us to wait... quite disapointed indeed.

    The question is does it feel better ride that the 2019 model as the battery on the older model sits down by the bottom bracket giving you better stability in my opinion ... with this battery integrated in the down tube may not feel as good as ride as the original e160 ??

    • @tamasvarga67
      @tamasvarga67 5 років тому +1

      Nitrogen Fix NO DIG!!! I would guess that the answer is no. The lower center of gravity of the previous model gives better stability but ebikes are quickly becoming fashion items (even with their pricing) and the looks are more important that the actual riding characteristics. I still prefer the external battery it’s smaller, lighter and more convenient on many ways.

    was hoping this will be my next bike, but seat tube is too long and has increased by 10mm and even on my currant Merida could be considered a bit to long too. Would have thought they would have gone a bit slacker and longer too. Not only that, but they have dropped the rear travel by 5 mm. Have to say thought its one of the best looking bikes out there, pity.

    I think Pole Stamina 140 is still better bike. 63° HTA, 80° STA, way lighter, 29er. I am waiting for ebikes to get such batteries so they won't need to recharge at all. Also, can you do bikepacking from north to south of iceland's highlands, maybe with colaboration with gmbn?

      BALDe-Biker On a full day ride you would still need to carry a spare even if you have 6-700Wh battery and on shorter afternoon rides you would just carry the dead weight of the bigger, more expensive battery. Personally, after a 2 years with two 500Wh batteries I find it optimal. From the price difference of the old vs new e160 I could buy ~5x 500Wh external Shimano batteries... :)

    Probably it's just me but the prices of new ebikes are ridiculous. 10 grand for a bike... please! My previous rule-of-thumb was that by adding 1 500€ you'd get the similarly specced ebike. Now it looks like it is 2 500€ or even more.
    And carbon frame in an ebike is just unnecessary cost factor. You'd shave something like 1kg from the total weight, which is nothing.
    Nice bike, though. Waiting for e120 to appear. But if the pricing is the same (why wouldn't it be) I'd probably stick with my current MY2018 e120. Or change to MY2019, which should sell quite cheaply now when Merida is switching to integrated battery.

  • @mutedmonkey

    It's a Nice, but misses out on a Super Nice. I think they have missed the boat without using a bigger battery... or even offering one at a later stage as others. They have dropped the spec on their top of the range and hiked the price by 3k. saying its R&D costs just doesn't cut it as Merida only make the frame. The battery, Motor, and all the Components are made by others so an extra 3K for a frame even though its carbon is taking the public for a ride

    Junk.. I brought one and the frame cracked within 48 hrs of owning the bike. Only started riding again so I wasn't riding hard just climbs and soft trail downhill over jumps under 300mm.

    First and foremost an ebike is about the motor above all else and yet you only spend less than 10 seconds talking about the motor. You're rapidly becoming an advertising platform for certain makes as opposed to a serious reviewer. So I'm afraid, it's a thumbs down from me.

      Florida Search17 It’s exactly the same Shimano E8000 motor as in the old e160 and countless other bikes. What do you want to know about it that wasn’t talked about 1000 times?

      @@tamasvarga67 Each video you do ought to be treated as a fresh look at every component. I and others ought not have to watch countless other videos of yours to learn about the motor. Also, the same motor fits one bike better than another.

      The motor is an important part of the bike yes however we chose to comment more on how Merida have chosen to build their bike around this motor. We don't do reviews here at EMBN, as we don’t feel it’s our place to tell you what to buy: you know your own preferences and priorities better than we ever could so we leave it to you to make your own decisions. Instead, what we do is to deal in facts, report on and feature products explaining how they’re different or unique. This video is a ‘first look’ at some new tech, where this bike is the major the subject matter of the content. We're never told what to say and always have control over what goes into a video as well as the final result. Paid promo isn't a bad thing. It allows us to bring you the info on new products and means we can continue to produce a range of content for you every day, right here on UA-cam, for free!

      I give you an example. Brose T is advertised as having 90 NM of torque. This is only true if it's fitted to certain bikes. The same motor would only give you 60 NM of torque if fitted to a bike with an internal hub gear. So the same motor but massively different performance depending on the bike it's fitted on.

      Florida Search17 The same motors behave the same way in each frame. They have the same power, torque, and characteristics because they are running on the same firmwares. Yamaha engines in Giant bikes are running customized firmwares but Shimano and Bosch are not so they are the same in a Merida, Commencal, Canyon etc.
      Also, the video says ‘includes paid promotion’ and the content is free for us...

    250w is too low. Needs 500W minimum for real hill climbing.

    Internal battery? It's only opens from the down side. After 3 years it hava a bottle cage? Brilliant 😅 And the 500wh battery doesn't sound an improvement 🤔
    But a nice looking bike.
