You don't pick the guitar, it picks you. If it's in your soul, you have no choice, you will always be a player, wether anyone is listening or not. It's not a hobby, it's a permanent part of your life.

The only reason to be a guitarist is because it's fun. Whether you're playing along to other people's music alone in your living room or writing your own music and playing it for others, it doesn't matter. If you're not having fun playing the guitar, you shouldn't be doing it, find something else to invest your time in that you do enjoy.

I started playing just over a year ago ( February 23) at 53 years old, ( I dabbled a bit in the 80’s but couldn’t get the hang of it, and was easily distracted 😂) but now I can play a bit , I practice every day , I’ve got 6 guitars ( which is not enough 😂) but one of the benefits I’ve found through learning/playing is that the osteoarthritis in my hands isn’t as bad, my dexterity is improving all the time , plus I can get a bit of a tune out of the things ( mostly in tune/key) and with so many instructors on UA-cam, it’s easy to pick up some really good tips on how to play things , you’re never too old until they nail the lid on 👍👍🤠🎸

I always wanted to learn guitar.
My cousin who was also my best friend always use to nag me about getting me to play guitar.
I would pick it up and play for her every so often the few chords I knew but never put any real effort into it.
She died unexpectedly 2 years ago when i was already at the most depressed I have ever been in my life.
So after her funeral I picked up my guitar again and decided to learn in her memory.
I'm still very new and not very good but that feeling of personal growth is wonderful when everything else feels like its going wrong in your life
I hope this doesn't feel like a grab for sympathy or a depression dump..
I just really wanted to tell you all playing guitar has been extremely therapeutic during a time when I felt my worst.
I haven't yet watched the video. I work from home and only managed to read the title but I wanted to quickly provide my perspective in case it would help someone else.

Mental health is the number one for me in this list buddy. It soothes the soul, extracts you from the stresses of real life, universal language. It cuts deeper than any spoken language. Creates more memories and emotion than anything else on earth. Like you said it heals when you’re struggling with things. You can have the shittiest days and jump on the guitar for 15 minutes and you’ve reset your soul ready for more.
P.s still love those two guitars. Gorgeous (especially the white ones f hole binding

"Received but didn't know" .... I visualized being able to play like my heroes. Clapton, Page, and Jeff Beck.
I never visualized fame and fortune, crowds or stadiums. Just amazing playing ability. Be a BADASS on guitar. Recently, I had an epiphany.
I got EXACTLY what I envisioned, but NOTHING MORE. I can now play like my heroes. No fame, fortune, crowds or stadiums in sight. Wow. So for me, I'm Tiger Woods of guitar, I shoot 65 every time I play, no matter where I play. PGA Tour may not be possible, but I'm thrilled.

Rob, I have to be honest. When I first started playing guitar, it was the only way I could express myself without words the tone, the feel the variation of a note one single note is life-changing. It’s a way to express yourself beyond any human interaction.

  • @user-qo6vj6pf6k
    @user-qo6vj6pf6k 2 місяці тому

Well done Rob - I've been playing since before you were born! Actively avoided the whole community thing, due to some not great experiences, however being in a band . . that was a different thing altogether. That feeling of going somewhere you never intended to go musically is like nothing on earth, and doing so with a bunch of other like-minded people . . well, it was what guitar playing was to me. If you're a young player, go and play with people, it'll teach you more about playing the guitar than any amount of YT vids or bedroom noodling. These days I still play most days, not for hours, but say 30 mins at a time - I'm faster, more articulate and madder than I ever was as a proto-shredder in 1979. Little did my Mum and Dad know what they'd unleash when they bought me that Rosetti classical for Christmas in 1974 😁

My dad Had a Gibson acoustic as soon as I could , I crawled over to it and touched a string
    Magic happened
My world exploded into a billion pieces as the open string resonated through every brain cell
Then many angels landed on each shoulder whispered to me ‘this is the way’
57 years later I’m still looking everyday for that feeling again
    My collection is not obscene
Just normal for an addict !
    You know one of each
Then a good one of each
However after having made many a mosh pit nowadays
I like to tune to 432 and chill ,
Interesting point you make about mental health
I have a serious question though
How does one sell them without having a panic attack ?
I can’t seem to do that
    Do I have a problem ?
My past connection to my guitars keeps me in a vice like grip of pure terror , I can’t let them move on
I recently pulled out an ES 175 that had been under the bed for over a decade
As soon as I played it I thought I’m so glad I never sold this
The thought of taking a picture and putting on Reverb fills me full of dread
    I thought about therapy
But then I have a strum and suddenly I don’t have a problem
    Is this normal ?
    🤯

A really welcome video and nice summary Rob. I’ve always struggled with getting into the right mindset to play guitar again (I played as a teenager, did gigs, won a local band competition, but then university stopped it all). Now I’m nearly 40 and think about guitar very differently. I think I’ll start again if I can keep my expectations low and approach it calmly - more for the wellbeing and community points you make as opposed to trying to be the best guitarist out there (which I’m not very likely to become at this late stage 😉). Thanks again for a thought provoking video. (Guildford, England)

The way I usually express it is "I have a lot of music in me and I need to get it out". That is to say, music is a sort of emotion in me that needs to be expressed, and playing guitar is one of the ways I do that. It feels good and it's relaxing (unless I'm being hard on myself for not hitting the chord changes fast enough...)

  • @robinwhitehouse8932

Started playing as a teenager in the 90s, didn't have room or time when I moved away from home, then took it down off the wall again during lockdown. I'm a classical singer, which involves a lot of high-stress musical situations (not that other kinds of music don't!) - learning music on the day for a concert, memorising 3 hours of opera in other languages, then trying to put them together in never-enough-time.
The value of having some zero-stress music to come home and unwind with is incalculable - meditative is exactly the word. I may end up never playing with other people again, but I'll never stop getting something from it.

If you connect with one or more guitars, pedals, amps, etc. that really help you create the music you hear in your head, there's very few things that feel better.

    Why NOT be a guitarist?
After playing for 45 years, it has become less of a blessing or gift, and more like a curse that I can't shake.
    Let me qualify that...
The guitar has become such an integral part of who I am that I can barely function without it.
I have a fear of what will happen when I can no longer express myself through my guitar.
It's a good curse to have though. 😊😊😊

Just a couple days ago, I went to dig out the guitar of the day and mash some cables. And found I couldn't focus at all, and stumbled through the most basic stuff I normally warm up with. Playing the guitar unplugged/acousticly, like I tend to with my new Revstar. Has made me realize how poor many of my techniques actually are.
Being able to focus solely on the frequencies coming from the guitar acousticly, is definitely more challenging. Having tons of expensive gear is cool, and I love it all. But if you can't sit quietly and focus on the basics, sometimes its better to regroup, and try again later. Cranking your 100watt tube amp to 11 won't make you any better of a player.

Hey Rob, I really like sounds and I think the guitar sounds kool. I’m starting to appreciate how it can be used as a voice, like a language. My rhythm is no good and I’m lazy with theory. They are my two main barriers. I feel like no matter what theory book I use I’m learning someone else’s style. It would be good if there was a theory that taught pure theory with no licks and riffs included. Just the principles of music so that you can learn through experimentation rather than copy. I love playing guitar and have yet to experience playing with drums.

First reason : Was the sounds of the guitars on master of puppets .
These sound like they are from another world. The cleans are enchanting . And the distortions are punchy and clear .
The things I learn so far : learning to play songs vs learning to play guitar , with a metronome are two things that I need to embrace equally .
Because I choose too learn songs . It took me a long time to learn to improvise . Because I was locked into existing shapes and patterns .

Three things that keep your brain elastic that you'll never "complete"
Learning an instrument, learning a marital art, learning a language. If you are doing at least one of the above you'll keep a healthy mind. ❤

when i seen this video listed in my subscription list. it also stated as the part of the title is worth it or is it still worth it which what caught my attention to this video because since i started playing on and off since 1990 ive been wrestling with the question specially since from 1990 when i really started the 1year and half before did not count cause i tried to play right handed and could not do it and quit. but in 1990 i got my lefty charvel model 475 guitar. thats when i started, to 1996 when i put things on hold to take care of my elderly parents even put on hold going to Musician institute of technologly aka MIT now simply M.I. but i look back and glad i did not follow through cause i am not a person who makes friends or socializes. i am the person who at the party is up against the wall or actually leaves and walks home. Also i was and am a conservative republican and M.I. is in the land of the left wing. I would have gotten harassed, bullied, assaulted to the point i would not be able to concentrate and fail and since i would have had to use Financial aid to get to go i would have ended up in debt for nothing. So i put an end to that dream so 1990 to 1996 i practice 90 percent of the time at least 5 hours to 8 hours a day, but take 2 weeks of every month each year during that time i would stay up five days straight practice without about 3 or 4 30 minute breaks for rest, bathroom, food, etc. i actually played till my fingers bled. thank god for Dr. Strings where their 9 guages feel like 8's and their 10's feel like 9's also they are the only strings i have used that you never get the metal shaving bits in your fingers. So if i would have continued to play and got good enough to be endorsed Dr. Strings would be a Permanent endorser for me cause i would never ever use any other strings. I played to the point the top joints/tips of my middle fingers in both hands have bent or curved . I could never afford in person lessons so i basically was learning by myself. and from former x-friends i used to roadie for their band from 1990-1994. before a falling out. So as far as i got is up to Barre chords and could never get past them, i tried every fingering, etc. i simply could not get the notes that supposed to ring out to ring out. So i went back to what grade school music teachers and my parents and others said the old saying you must be born with god given talent and god has to destine you to be a musician otherwise there will be only so far you get then you hit a brickwall/roadblock you can get past. Mine is barre chords, some could even just transition from normal chords which i kind of had issues with that as well but i wanted to start and get all the basics of every technique mastered before advancing to the intermediate levels. Hell i did not realize till the time i stopped playing guitar that tapping you simply did not tap straight down as i was doing and i thought all you did was tap straight down with alot of pressure which i kind of almost flattened the tips of my fingers (but they have went back to normal because since 1996 i only picked up the guitar 2005 to 2012 then have not picked it up since. So I am still trying to see if it was worth all the time and if it would be worth it to pick the guitar up and try to get a career in music going at age 53. with nothing going for me a loner who does not like to make friends, have friends, does not ever date or had any or does not want to have any romantic or sexual relationships, music is my only and sole passion in life. Now benefits is I can get all my rage, anger, aggression, hate, out in the lyrics and it keeps me from being physically violent also. it gives me a peace of mind, Music like solitude is my sanctuary. Give me the music gear i want, a secluded studio, with high speed internet and all my favorite food and i will be happy. also being a conservative tea party patriot, MAGA Warrior true traditional Metal musician/songwriter, who is pro life and pro traditional marriage and traditional families only, who supports and defends Israel and the Jews. Who has not filter and speaks the brutal stone cold absolute truth in the form of verbal razors. That limits me a lot due the T.D.S. (Trump derangement syndrome), and the wokeness crap. also is it worth spending more time and money to get where i am today nowhere. because not only do i have being a conservative and trump supporter all the trump haters and left wingers in the world against me on top of my family's history of ultra bad luck. the only way to describe it is this you have multipe mike tysons in their prime hitting you at once with their knock out punch, but the little good luck you have the stopped but more worse bad luck comes you get hit by a meteor the size of a school bus falling from the sky, then you have a tiny minute or day of average luck then the mike tyson's start punching again and the cycle repeats. That is how my family's bad luck works. Then there is my perfectionist side. If i can not get it exactly like my vision i will not release the song, album video, i will not start a band, etc. So is it worth staying a guitarist, getting back to playing guitar and trying to go for a music career, I simply do not know at this time, Right now it's like a scale and it is tipping verly closely to no it is not worth it go find something else, find something that god gave you the talent to do/be and and destined you to be cause your simply wasting money and time on this. I have this voice in my head of you wasted to much time on this. People who are honest with themselves would only spend a year before realizing they were not destined to be whatever it is race car driver, musician, vocalists, etc. but when i was playing here is my top 10 1. it brings me peace of my 2. i can release my hate, anger, rage, without getting physically violent. 3. i can speak my mind which being a loner and someone who does not like to be around a group of people it is hard to do i feel uncomfortable so through music i can express myself better. 4. if i got to the point to tour, i would see the places i never got to see. 5. the energy you get from the fans no drug can surpass that feeling of having thousands of people singing your songs, giving you that energy so you give it right back to them . 6. at one time before everything became political i would say i had dreams to do collaborations with other artists, musicians now i don't and have bad opinions on collaborations and the over use of them 7. Doing music videos i have tons of ideas. Hell if i had skills and the money and the band i would do as a tribute to you and Dorje A video of white dove which wont go into here but band is in a plane crash in the mountains and each band member is separated and lost and a white dove comes to guide them to a cabin. through the song each band member follows the dove to the cabin. then camera looks through the window as the last band member walks in and everybody is happy and the is gear set up in the cabin and they start playing. then it pans out to the white dove sitting on the window sill and then flies off as the song ends. i have this nack to listen to a song and picture a already done video for it in my head. 8. Music gear and instrument collection. I am a ultimate gear head. I make up lists of gear i dream of having. MY list of guitars and instruments the last time i added to it was early 2000s and the guitars /basses/acoustics, etc. alone stopped at 300,000 in fact if i did a updated version it would be in the 300 million or more. That is how gear and instrument crazed i am. 9. i love to go to music stores, i would live at NAMM if i could in fact i have a plan to save NAMM and Make it better and move it to OHIO instead of California where there is too many regulations, taxes, etc. I am glad to see NAMM made some of the changes that i also had which was have days for the consumers. but my idea expands NAMM to 2-3 weeks. i may post my ideas to save NAMM on my Facebook page. 10. to piss off all those who hate this conservative trump supporter traditional metal musician/songwriter to be making and releasing music. but right now i don't thing it's worth it anymore wasting my time and money trying to go for something that the odds of me even coming close to succeeding is slim and none and slim got on Elon Musk's space ship and left the universe.

No secret, most Guys gets into Guitar, for chicks, side chicks and make a noise, to be cool, its cooler to be an unemployed Musician than an unemployed shop worker, if you can sing AND play guitar, you will be still be beating them off with a stick in your mid 50's, even when your hair is gone. What the World actually needs though, is more Keys Players, even if they dont get the chicks, and drummers, but they get the weird chicks. Rob, if your ever around Surrey and fancy a play, be cool to have you get up with us.
