Your book about Japanese planes is one of the most detailed and informational things i've ever introduced to. i'm just so happy and thankful i’ve had one.

In Catalunya and South France the planes were make from Holly oak (Quercus ilex) natural tree form mediterrean area. I hink it's very close to red oak from japan. Thanks too much for this seria very nice and helpfull

The Japanese prefer their native white oak than red oak to make these planes

Really enjoying this series. So I just had to look for a book on the subject. Both surprised and pleased that the one I bought was yours! Thank you, I found it very complimentary to these videos! Building mini planes like your, if I can. 🥴😁 Have some 52100 bearing steel I’m trying for the blades. Might try forge welding it to some mild steel so it’s more authentic… maybe. Thanks again.

Live Oak might be a good wood for dai. I have some drying that I'd like to try. My suspicion is that it is probably the closest thing to Japanese Oak that we have in N America. Beech is a pretty good wood for dai. Thank you for your videos (and your book; it's really great).

I haven't tried Live oak and I'm not familiar with it, but I'll check it out if I get the chance. I've been hearing good things about osage orange lately; if I can get a suitable piece, I might try that next. I've used beech successfully for western planes, but was disappointed with the piece I used for a Japanese plane. Thank you for your compliments! I'm glad you enjoyed them.

Hi Scott! I have been following you on instagram and I recently bought out your book “discovering Japanese handplanes” on order. I am curious where you source your blades from as I have found it difficult to find them.

Sorry to take so long to get back to you! Currently the best sources for blade are suzukitool.com and hidatool.com. You can also deal with them directly for specific requests. They are in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Thank you for the video. Where do you suggest we can purchase the blade and blacks?
