Great subject and presentation. At some point in our bass playing journey, we will either be told directly, or maybe come up with the idea on our own: "Hey, less is more". It is my personal struggle to make this idea sound musical and pleasant. This lesson provided wonderful guidance on how to implement and practice the silences. Thank you. Keep 'em coming.
Good stuff, as usual, man. Never thought about resting during solos. Having watched this now, I can see it as a helpful navigational tool instead of feeling like I have to fill every bar with an arpegiated note filled exercise up and down the fingerboard. Cool! 👍🏿
Really helpful video, thanks! As someone who always struggles with playing solos this lesson really unlocks things for me - to take my time, not feel I have to play something over each chord and to choose what I'm going to play.
A teacher of mine used to say "imagine you're playing a wind instrument, when you run out of air, rest!" I kind of liked this idea so much that now solos with never ending phrases put me on my nerves! Your lesson expands on this idea and it is invaluable, thanks a lot!
Dear Matt, after being a Bass Guitar player since my young days, I started my second bass life two years ago with the Upright in a Jazz Combo and in a traditional Bigband. There is obviously a lot to learn and master for me, and even if the web seems to be full of lessons and tutorials, there's not much stuff that actually hits the nail for me, or triggers my inspiration. But your content does, and I just wanted to say thank you! No matter if its the sight reading thing, the minor blues, Giant Steps, the two-feel or this one above - I simply always leave my own agenda, and listen to what you are teaching, knowing that its worth it every time. You are a very pleasant, positive-minded personality and a great but unpretentious professional musican! So - no special requests from my side, just honest positive feedback (the least I can do to honour your professional content ;-)) Looking forward to any new episodes coming up on air, hopefully soon ;-) Thx and best regards from far away Bavaria!
Wow, I’m so moved by your extremely kind words - thank you so much! It means so much to know that I’m able to help someone - and especially neat when it’s someone elsewhere in the world. And your comment comes at a perfect time because my channel Seems to have really plateaued in the past few weeks and it didn’t feel like I was attracting many more folks. Anyway, I’m sincerely grateful that you took the time to write and for the thoughts you express. And yes, I’m excited to keep getting the videos out! Sometimes it takes a lot longer to do them than I think :)
Thanks! I’m not sure if you were commenting that you play guitar because this is a bass channel or because guitarists have a reputation for playing too much 😅 (I’m teasing with love) thanks for watching!
Problem comes with players not attenuated (pardon the pun) to the idea. They hear a space, and believe that if no one else is filling it then they must fill it. There is a place for blazing solos and I love players who do it well… AND there’s a place for this.
@@LearnJazzBasswithMattRybicki No, I did not think that at all! I was merely coming from a very recent experience with a player who fails to grasp the value of letting the music breathe.
@@LearnJazzBasswithMattRybicki sick bro.. low key always knew deep down you were a gangster.. 😎.. but how bout just sharing your bass picadillos?.. YT will just have to wait on those other skeletons 🫣🤭

Well said!
Great lesson, Matt!!

Man, I love this. Thanks for sharing
This is a great concept. We bass players can certainly solo just the way Miles Davis and Ahmad Jamal did.
Great observation!
You are such a great teacher. You are an inspiration to me to continue my studies and have fun at the same time.
Thanks so much for that - it means a lot!
Great lesson. Thank you teacher
You are welcome!

Thanks man! Glad it was thought provoking
Thank you for transmitting these sincere ideas of musical beauty and vital beauty.

So plain and simple ... great lesson ! thanks a lot
Thanks for watching!
Great video. Was a good reminder to me, and i used this approach at a gig tonight. Thanks, man.
Amazing - thanks for watching and letting me know. That’s very cool
Really helpful video, thanks! As someone who always struggles with playing solos this lesson really unlocks things for me - to take my time, not feel I have to play something over each chord and to choose what I'm going to play.
Glad it helped!
Absolutely helpful. Rests are hard but it’s a skill that every musician needs to develop.
Thank you a lot
Thank you as always!

Dude your sound is so nice and warm but still clear. 👍👍👍
Thank you so much that means the world!

Great lesson, useful examples, and beautiful playing!

I'll second that emotion! (With apologies to Smokey Robinson)
Something that is forgotten when soloing! Thank you for reminding me. ;)
Thanks for watching!
Great class, loved your video. Thank you!

A beautiful lesson. A lesson in Beauty
Wow, such kind words thank you so much.
This is it.
Charlie Haden was a master on this concept, on slow, medium and even fast tempos!
He was very special!

I tried this two weeks ago with my band and it didn't go well because they stopped grooving the changes when I rested.

Where did these bassless tracks originate? Would love more “play alongs” like these
They’re the play a longs for my Hal Leonard Method Book. Yes, more like this planned to record!
