  • www.balticaa.com Sometimes aviation looks simple from the side of amateur. Though, imagine the situation that you would be the only person who is responsible for landing the Airbus A320 aircraft with 180 one the board. Would you be able to control it? Baltic Aviation Academy (Lithuania) decided to do the experiment -- take a person who has no clue what do in the cockpit and after 5 minutes of introduction to leave with help of an air traffic controller only. What results it is going to bring?

      Recall, this was her 5th attempt. After having had 4 crashes I bet she now knows where to find the gear lever. There is almost no real chance she could've made that landing, besides the fact that her coach was standing right behind her and able to see and hear the panel. Add to that, just the sheer terror of it all? Spells near certain death, imho. 😱😮😢

      lmao I noticed this too. This is the most difficult bit for me in my flight sim, keeping lined up perfectly with the runway, so I was hoping to see how she did it. Now I know that I just need to focus on my throttle to get lined up properly.. lmao

      +jdavis234 Ha I was thinking the same thing. I've flown desktop sims as well as the full motion 737 sim at the Delta flight museum. I'm pretty sure I'd have no problem once I'm on final long as there's good weather and visibility. I'd be more worried about trying to figure out the FMC and coordinate with LNAV and VNAV functions on the autopilot early on.

      I actually got a little choked up the first time. At that moment, under those (admittedly unusual) circumstances, it was her airplane. There was nothing left for him to do. Probably better, in a way, to just stop talking to her at that point instead of barking reminders that could have quickly overwhelmed her.

    I've found that people without flying experience are unable to control all axis of flying - pitch, roll and speed. I've let friends try to land an aircraft in flight simulators - no one could do it properly. If I handled the throttle for them, I suddenly got some very impressive landings. Interesting!

    That landing looked so wrong. How is the sim for simulating ground bounces/gear physics? The landing is just so artificially smooth somehow. To me that looked like she was almost putting the nose wheel down first, but the camera angle might make it hard to make out correctly.

Natalja is also bright, confident and gives very good honest feedback (sometimes with a cheeky reply ‘of course I remember’) This reminds me of teaching students (including many females) to drive the EMS Synthi 100. A monster synthesiser back in the ‘70s. The Synthi 100 was both analogue/digital (vintage digital) At least with Synthi 100 it couldn’t be crashed (no people ever died) “If you made a mistake you would simply get a new or unexpected result” Pranas and Natalja PM me if you ever come to Melbourne, Bravo well done!

    So much wrong with this. No arming of the spoilers, at 400ft agl she sets flaps full (should be done well before that) and then she seems a lot further away from the runway... when she is left of the runway there is no way you would be able to align an a320 that quickly and the on landing it was massively nose down with no flare. That would not end well.

    • @michaelomalley592
      @michaelomalley592 2 роки тому +1

      The moment that the A/P disconnects, the aircraft is at that point no longer in control meaning that you must take immediate manual control of the aircraft because once the A/P disconnects or malfunctions, the ILS is also affected as well hence why the aircraft was way off to the left rather than lined up and centered towards the runway during “final approach”.
      --> Think of it as a vehicle that has cruise control: when cruise control is set at a certain speed, the vehicle will maintain the predetermined speed until you either apply the brakes or cancel/turn off the cruise control ergo you as the driver must immediately take back control.

  • @TNFSDK

    Its the aileron trim. They are used to trim the aircraft for level flight. Basically as a pilot you would have to roll these back and forth regularly to make sure the plane isn't gaining or losing altitude during flight since headwind, updrafts etc can change your rate of lift and thus whether the aircraft is gaining or losing altitude, and thus you trim the aircraft to maintain level flight. Or the auto pilot does it.

    On that note I beg to differ... at all medium to large airports ATC can bring up the flight control manuals as well as a virtual cockpit for just such cases. they do this to not only help the person locate the controls - but also, by reading the emergency manual ( same as in the aircraft ) - they can make sure the numbers they need to tell the person on-board the aircraft the right ones given their alt an speed. ( eg) if they say reduce airspeed to 120 they checked the numbers against the book.

    Was the fact that autopilot turned off expected? Standard procedure or some failure? If expected, I would expect warning bit in advance, plus some training of flying (changing directions, alt) in safe altitude.
    Also, was turning to left and right all that was needed? No trim, rotation or so?
    Thx a lot for answer.

    This video reminds me that decades ago (not sure when, certainly pre-9/11) SAS had some short "stick-holder" courses for cabin crew and interested members of the public. The course covered level flight and ordinary landing procedures, and included both simulator and real aircraft time (without passengers). The idea was to learn just enough to be confident in your ability to deal with a loss of pilot emergency.
    In addition to these (heavily advertised, few actual participants) SAS courses. I have heard rumors (only rumors) that another Nordic airline used to use pilots in training as part of the cabin crew, partially as a way for them to pay for their training, so at that airline, the flight hostess would really know how to fly if necessary.

    Im not a pilot, but if that happened to me, and the autopilot disconnected so close to the ground, and put me so far away from the runway, i would probably want to do a go around and try a second approach, and try to get the autopilot working again, instead of trying to get the aircraft back onto the centreline of the runway from such a short distance away

    • @michaelomalley592
      @michaelomalley592 2 роки тому +1

      That would “normally” be the ideal approach under *ideal* conditions, but not all circumstances are the same and may deem for you to quickly land the aircraft...for example: electrical fault/malfunction causing the AP to disconnect (although the trouble aural warning tone is different from the A/P disconnect), engine fire/failure, low fuel/fuel leak, adverse weather conditions etc.) which could mean that you only have just ONE opportunity to safely land the aircraft.

    The pitots were not broken--they were iced up. You are right--the correct thing to do is to maintain the nose attitude (start by keeping it on the horizon) and set the throttles to cruise setting for that altitude-or a value of 80% if you are not sure. The main cause of the Air France crash was that the copilot (for some reason) pulled the side stick fully back and kept it there--putting the plane into a stalled condition. Since the sticks are not interconnected the left seat pilot was unaware.

      I do agree. Granted it’s only a simulation, but as such first thing that should be emphasized is how someone who is not a pilot can establish ATC comms (be it a flight attendant or passenger) and how to identify as well as to tune into the emergency frequency so that ATC can easily identify you and better be able to assist whomever it may be in safely piloting the aircraft and more importantly ensure a safe landing as well. I’m no commercial pilot but as a private pilot who’s only rated for a fixed wing, single prop aircraft (1977 CESSNA C152), I still to this day still hear my instructor’s voice when it came to this.
      It is also my opinion that whilst a flight attendant’s duties obviously doesn’t entail piloting a commercial aircraft, I feel that some *very* basic training such as the aforementioned would prove critical and highly beneficial if any in-flight emergencies like this should arise since compared to any passenger(s) that they are slightly more familiar with said aircraft which would better mitigate against the risk of a accident/crash landing.

    2 main points when watching those crash videos - 1 is the Military crashes...they fly under different rules
    . 2 ( and this is important ) - when watching things like air crash investigations and the like, take particular notice of the year the incident happened...things have gotten a LOT better in the present day with much better safety systems on board and much better and more reliable aircraft that are tougher and more warning systems that prevent a pilot from errors ( anti-collision ) etc

  • @FAIRDINKIUM

    I have 3 RC aircraft - all are pretty large and 2 are twin engine. for me, I'm not into doing loops and high speed passed - for me its all about doing approaches looking through a 2 10 inch monitors the top one gives me my "visual" the one underneath gives a B&W display of just the O.S.D. output so I practice approaches. it gets pretty intense with cross winds and fine adjustments on the RC control sticks. add some lights and with bright LED landing lights - night approaches are AWESOME!

    Shouldn't the title be from height 2500 ft as qfe would be set for landing rather than qnh?

    How do you use the aircraft's radio to contact the ground for help?

  • @Cyclist0623
    @Cyclist0623 11 років тому

    You might be able to, I don't know your skills with a big aircraft. I thought I probably could too, having done quite a few small craft (single engine, prop) landings. I had a friend who was in charge of running the Northwest 757 simulators in Eagan, MN. Very early one morning, he let me give it a try in one that wasn't in use for about 1.5 hours. With no AP, it took me four time to get down with a landing we could all walk away from. It's harder than it looks!

    Don't you have to manually program the ILS somehow before activating?

  • @Bmoney4206
    @Bmoney4206 12 років тому

    I agree, center line failure, and the lack of a flare or any sort of nose up attitude would have also possibly collapsed the nose gear, if nothing else any cross wind and she would have been testing the capabilities of a A320 off road. Also the auto pilot disconnect didn't have her lined up with the runway that's an ATC vectors to final failure.

    Here in Sydney there is place you can go to and do exactly the same thing.- I did pretty well in my Emergency landing - but I noticed that she didn't have to set up the ILS - ( I remembered that I had sweat running off me during my turn )- and the instructions were much quicker! - but I did expect to take it after I cut the FD & AP. I held it still till nose down then reverse lever & brake then cut off. flaps up on clearing the active and tried to keep the nose on the line - it was hard!

    These automated systems make flight more safe. Especially in the event that visibility is obscured, windshield damaged etc. or in the event that the pilot cannot see or if the pilots are incapacitated, these systems save lives.

    it can be done for 10 grand, not motion though, that's more like 15, but you have to build it yourself, its fairly simple though if you've got the room, 3 hydraulic pump's mounted to the bottom of a cockpit is easy to install, you can buy the circuit board's pre made to convert the movement's from FSX, i'm currently working on a home cockpit, mainly building the aesthetics myself, mounting on a base to upgrade to motion eventually :)

    I tend to agree with you. By looking at the way she handles the AP, she seems to be quite natural in turning all the nobs. She also doesn't seems to have a lot of questions regarding what to do next. However, she may be familiar with the cockpit even w/o proper training (just like i do, thx to FSX). Another thing is that Airbus always has a slightly more user-friendly cockpit as compared to Boeing (just my opinion).

    But you can also approach and touch in AP? Or not? Or when I must disengeage AP? AP tells to disengeage by due to ILS?

  • @pokerec

    They are the trim wheels, the reason they are rotating is because the Autopilot has control and it is making adjustments

    At that altitude, pulling the joystick back full will create a stall, on any commercial jet. Not sure if stall warning is even accociated witht he speed sensors, isn't it a different sensor?
