tonyOn1ce Thanks! It has been my parents’ dream since the 80s after they saw the greenhouse at Epcot in Disney World. They finally built it 5 years ago.
Thank you so much! I will have to try this method. I’ve tried to germinate various types of spinach seeds to grow hydroponically for a year with no success, so I’m super hopeful this works for me. My other hydroponics experiments have been much more successful, but my family eats tons of spinach, so that’s the leafy green I’m most anxious to succeed at. Thanks again!
Yes of course! That is exactly how we were too. All of us love spinach, but it just wouldn't germinate. We threw away a lot of supplies trying to get it to work. This saves so much growing medium. Hope it works for you!
I have to try this. My germination rate on my spinach sucked for my first time. I got 7 nice plants out of about 50 seeds. This has to be the secret to getting more of them to grow. Thanks!
Lovely video devon I must try spinach in hydroponic growing and those pigs are adorable ..your little man loves the digger I bet you take care too devon best wishes as always to you and your family paul x
Yes Paul, I highly recommend growing spinach. There is a huge difference between fresh and old stuff from the grocery store. And yes my boys love anything on wheels. Thank you for that, and I hope you have a wonderful weekend.
thanks ladies for sharing. we're a fairly small non-profit trying out spinach and so far very low germination no matter how we've tried. we will try this out and let you know how it goes!
@@HomegrownPassion hi. so we tried 2 varieties, butterflay and F1 space, just a few seeds germinated after 3 days, most of the seeds got moldy :( . I followed exactly how you're video shows.
I used a 1020 tray rather than a plate as you did, used the paper towels, soaked with water & peroxide solution, spread seeds, paper towel on top, more solution, then another 1020 tray for black out. tagged it and had staff uncover after 36 hours and nothing. do you suggest certain temp/environment? Our seeding/sprouting room is typically 72*/60% humidity. thanks so much for you help and suggestions!
Omg thank you I’ve been struggling with germinating my spinach I’m definitely about to try this today, I love spinach so j in was really hoping the ones I have actually would germinate but they didn’t twice lol
You are very welcome! This was our problem too. We really wanted spinach, but could not get it to germinate. Maybe a few sprouts here and there, but we ended up throwing away a lot of wasted seeds and growing medium. Good luck! 🥬
This helped me SO MUCH!! Some sprouted sooner than others but they all did. I had a small sample size, but this is a 100% improvement so I am ecstatic😁
Hi Devon! I'm trying to germinate the spinach seeds in the Oasis with a paper towel over top. It's taking awhile but I think I finally see the rhizome growing. Now I've started some on the plate with paper towels. I'm testing it out to see if it's quicker. My plants have been in the NFT for two days and I think the kale is already taller. Everything looks green so I hope my nutrient solution is good. Take care! Have an awesome week!
That's a good experiment idea! That would save a step. We just have to the sections of spinach left. Won't be long until we are done with it in the greenhouse, then I may have to try starting some at home. Sounds like you nutrients are good and glad to hear the kale is working out in there. Thank you and hope you have a great week too!

Wow!! I’m anxious to give this a try!!! I’ve wasted a ton of seeds trying to get things to germinate but some end up having either a little bit of white fur or a black fur on top of the papertowel and I never knewif it’s okay to use any seeds that have germinated with that or not so I always err on the side of caution and toss them out and try again! I’m wondering if this hydrogen peroxide water would be good for all my seeds because I’m sure it would stop the fur growth? As for spinach seeds specifically I’ve tried repeatedly to germinate them and I’ve never once had any luck so I’m definitely trying this with my new spinach seeds for this year!! This is a well guarded secret because it’s the first time I’ve ever heard to sprout them like this! Thank you for sharing!! We may have some lovely fresh spinach in our menu plan in the distant future!! As for how you are planting your peppers in the bags of vermiculite, my only question is why? I’ve been growing peppers in nutrient rich water and nothing else for a very long time with terrific success! I just fill the 4 litre jug with nutrient rich water and stick the sprout in the top I don’t need anything to hold it up it just drapes over the top of the container and I wrap my containers in tin foil to prevent any nasty algae growth and the tin foil wrapped around the neck does two things it keeps any dust or debris from falling in the top and also sunlight from shining in and it also gives the little plant some support until it get big and strong to support itself, I leave them in this container until they put on their first round of peppers and then after that we move them into the next size of container because I’ve found the pepper plants will grow to the size of container that their roots will fill and another thing I’ve noticed is after they put on their first round of peppers and they are fully ripened on the vine when I harvest them after the last pepper is harvested the plant immediately enters a growth cycle putting on all kinds of new leaves and then it starts blooming all over again! I had thought there would be a period of dormancy but that hasn’t been the case with my peppers to date and they are filled with peppers getting ready to ripen and turn red very very soon! I’m just an indoor hobby farmer trying to reduce our food bill with growing our own veggies so that’s why I’m using a lot of DIY methods to grow as inexpensively as possible. So far so good, my best crops to date have been seeds from bakers creek heirloom seed company called lipstick peppers they are a small to medium size variety of sweet red pepper, they taste sooo sweeet they are like candy which makes me think 🤔 hhhmm red pepper jam ??!!! That would be delicious with these I bet! Anyway something else to try once we have more harvested then we know what to do with so far we just harvest them as we eat them and they are soooo good definitely the crown jewel on top of our salads! 🥰🙏🏻🇨🇦
I hope it works well for you! The main reason we use the hydrogen peroxide is to help break open the seed coat. I think it’d be a great experiment to try it with your other seeds. Those lipstick peppers sound wonderful! I love pepper jam. There was a vendor at the farm market that sold some. But we grow out peppers in the grow bags because they are easy for us to care for and move around. We just stick the emitters in and they are good to go all season. Thanks for the nice comment and go luck on your seeds! 😄🥬
@@HomegrownPassion thank you! I’ll definitely let you know how I make out with the other seeds and using the water with hydrogen peroxide. The lipstick sweet peppers are sooo incredible I highly recommend. I love trying different varieties of sweet peppers, I’m trying a new kind called purple passion the interesting thing about these peppers when perfectly ripe are supposed to be purple on the outside but remain green on the inside. One other question I’ve learned that peppers will continue to grow after you have harvested the last pepper the plant will grow and begin to put on additional blossoms and continue to go through these growing seasons and harvests I’m just wondering if you have continued to grow your plants beyond the one season ? If so, what is the longest you’ve been able to maintain a plant and have it continue to produce abundance? It’s my understanding that aggressive pruning assists with these progressions, the more you prune the strong the plants stems become and are able to hold even more peppers. My lipstick plant is on its second harvest and as more then double the peppers then the previous harvest and the main stems are strong like green branches I’ve pruned very heavily so that all that is currently visible underneath are peppers with an umbrella of leaves above. 🙏🏻🥰🇨🇦 I would think if pepper plants can continue to grow like this and produce exceptional harvests it would be a growers dream and just pure profit? After this harvest on my lipstick plant which is currently in 40litres of water I’ll be upsizing it into a 100litre tote as I believe the plants/roots grow to fill the container that holds them and with each additional upgrade in size the peppers themselves each become larger, perhaps that’s just coincidence and that once they become their true size they won’t get any larger then they are supposed to be? I know I have a lot of unanswered questions contained in this but it’s part of the fun of all my experiments. With my experiments continuing in an effort to try to answer the questions and to truly put preconceived notions to the test. I think because I’m new to gardening I’m more apt to try things that others already believe to be impossible. For me I need to try it myself and not just take it as true.
@@HomegrownPassion well i don't really have a question about the video but I'm just wandering how old are you if you don't mind me asking, if you do just ignore this comment and thank u ♡
@Homegrown passion do you put them in the pre watered cubes with the sprout up or down? Does it matter? Also do you continue to water them over the 5 week span of being in the cubes before putting them in the aquaPonic system? What do you use for nutrients for spinach?
thank you for sharing valuable knowledge. one question : do you soak the cube with nutrient water from the start or just plain water?? if its nutrient water, what kind of product and how much ppm is required?? thank you
Hi Wayne, and thank you! They do not go on a heat mat. We put the trays into the control tunnel, and it stays right around 70 degrees F in there. -Devon
I am gonna give this a try in a few minutes. I just told my daughter "I can't seem to grow spinach. I've tried like 4 or 5x and the seeds just won't germinate." and she said "oh, thats too bad, I really like fresh spinach". so, I looked for videos and found yours. Thank you so much, fingers crossed. One question please. Im doing this inside. The room is approx. 68-70 degrees. Should I put the seeds on a heat mat? no, right, spinach doesn't like heat? Please let me know. Thanks again.
So helpful! Thanks to your tip I just got my spinach seeds germinated and are ready to go into my hydroponic system :) Do you guys know any organic substitute for hydrogen peroxide that can accelerate germination?
That it wonderful! I'm not sure of an organic substitute. I would have to do research. The hydrogen peroxide is mainly to help weaken the seed coat and break it open. I'm sure their is something that could also work, I'd just need to look.
Look up “Seed scarification”. A cannabis growers and university botanist’s best kept secret. Glue high grit sandpaper to the insides of a small cardboard box like a match box; place seeds and shake’em for a bit The abrasions on the seeds coating from your sandpaper box contraption, help’s boost germination rates.
I know this question is old, maybe you've found something and could share it but I use grapeseed extract when I'm germinating seeds for my birds. I was thinking of trying that.
Thank you for the information! So after the radical is exposed after 36 hours, they are still in the dark for approximately another week before heading to the greenhouse?
Hey Davin! That's great synchronisity I was trying so germinate some myself since a week with no results! I will follow your mama advises! Just a question, once germinated should I keep them in the dark for a bit longer? Thank you again for your video keep it up!
That's awesome! Glad to hear it. I hope the info helps you. I just texted her to be sure, and she said after putting into the Oasis cubes, she keeps it covered and checks it twice a day. Once she sees the first tiny leaves she takes the cover off. Said it's usually a couple days or so. Good luck 😃
Hi! Yes water flows 24 hours in the NFT channels where the spinach grows. When we get the Bato buckets going, I will make a video on them. Water only flows once an hour or so to those. In the grow bags with the perlite/vermiculite mixture, we water those once or twice a day.
A bunch of times! They do so well when we keep them trimmed up. It all depends on the weather, but we've gotten 7 or 8 cuttings before they needed pulled or bolted.
Interesting. Never seen the two paper plate method before. I put seeds between two sheets of paper towel, generously wet the towels, insert the towels flat into a large plastic bag, and leave in a warm spot. Within 2 days, the radicle is out, even a few mm long. As you say, it is best to transplant the seeds at this stage, because as the root grows it binds firmly with the paper and is harder to get off. The biggest variables to seed sprout success is the right moisture and right temperature....and possibly whether the seeds have been stored well. Seeds have to be kept moist, and temps of 65-85F speed up germination for winter crops, and 75-95F for summer crops. The high temp can be applied during the day, and the lower temp during the night.
We plant the cilantro right into the Oasis cubes, but this method would work too. We've been on a micro cilantro kick recently and plant it just like our other microgreens.
Yes because the seeds have already started to sprout in the paper towels. We forgot to check on them once after a day, and they got very leggy fast. Now we know to keep a close eye.
Any explanation vid available for the nursery? "Put in nursery and cover again until they start growing. Leave in nursery for about a week, then place in channels."
I tried it and it did not work. I soaked in the peroxide water for about 8 hours then put onto a plate and nothing. im lost...all my seeds minus kale have floundered as well.
I don’t think you watched the video carefully. Seeds are not supposed to be soaked in peroxide water. Please watch my newest video on this subject and you should get positive results if you follow the directions. ua-cam.com/video/qQoYadSZty4/v-deo.htmlsi=EGSs5RyEktDhMuph
There is a temperature control unit, I have 2 coming, that I will install with an old fridge and a crockpot filled with water to make a seed germination chamber. The crock inside the fridge will keep my seeds warm and moist for quick germination in winter. Also thinking about use as a hatchery. Sounds crazy, but I'll soon know. nice video , love watching your videos ♡
That is great! I'm glad you like them! Let me know if you ever have any questions. 😄🥬🍃
@@HomegrownPassion well i don't really have a question about the video but I'm just wandering how old are you if you don't mind me asking, if you do just ignore this comment and thank u ♡
sup for alll Nah I don’t mind. I’m 31 😁
@@HomegrownPassion wow i wasn't expecting that at all you look much younger i would've gave you 26 maximum , impressive
sup for alll Thank you for the compliment 💕 I like to think it’s because of all the fresh veggies I eat 😉
Could you do one of the videos for cilantro? I am having a hard time getting them to germinate.
Sure! I can show that. We have some growing right now as micro cilantro on the biostrate growing medium.
@Homegrown passion do you put them in the pre watered cubes with the sprout up or down? Does it matter? Also do you continue to water them over the 5 week span of being in the cubes before putting them in the aquaPonic system? What do you use for nutrients for spinach?
not sure it matters....yes we water and nutrients are the same as the rest of the greenhouse....same system
thank you for sharing valuable knowledge. one question : do you soak the cube with nutrient water from the start or just plain water?? if its nutrient water, what kind of product and how much ppm is required?? thank you
I do soak it in nutrient water just because i can take it off the system really easy. I don't know PPM I use EC and its about 1.5 and ph is 5.8
thanks for your reply. easier to take it off the system? the nft channel? could you elaborate?
I have a hose that is from the nutrient feed line that I can use to fill up a bucket or water with nutrient water. Sorry I was confusing.
Hi great info. Do you put the plate on a heat mat.
Thanks wayne
Hi Wayne, and thank you! They do not go on a heat mat. We put the trays into the control tunnel, and it stays right around 70 degrees F in there.

I have watched these spinach seeds germination I am going to try it, I've tried it many times but nothing germinate at all. Thanks you, God bless
Good luck to you! I hope you works well and God bless.
Will a plastic container work? I don’t have any styrofoam plates on hand and I wanted to get this under way today.
Sure, I would not see why it wouldn't
Do you run the nutrient water constantly or do you run it in intervals for all your lettuce?
24/7
@@HomegrownPassion thank you
@@HomegrownPassion thank you.
I would say no heat mat... just keep around 70 should be fine. Good luck! let me know how you did.
Are there any other seeds you tried that the peroxide method helps with germination or is it just for spinach seeds?
when we were doing fodder the barley seeds seemed to benefit from the hydrogen peroxide as well
Are the oasis cubes reusable, and must you sterilize them somehow?
no they are only use once
Where do you buy your seeds. I own a apothecary and want to grow micrograms for our clients?
most all of our stuff is from Johnny Seeds
at what temperature did you put them on to germinate?
Just in the control tunnel which is about 70 degrees Have lots more videos that explain it in more detail.
Do you have to use a styrofoam plate??
Glass would work. Just not paper plates
So helpful! Thanks to your tip I just got my spinach seeds germinated and are ready to go into my hydroponic system :)
Do you guys know any organic substitute for hydrogen peroxide that can accelerate germination?
That it wonderful! I'm not sure of an organic substitute. I would have to do research. The hydrogen peroxide is mainly to help weaken the seed coat and break it open. I'm sure their is something that could also work, I'd just need to look.
Look up “Seed scarification”. A cannabis growers and university botanist’s best kept secret.
Glue high grit sandpaper to the insides of a small cardboard box like a match box; place seeds and shake’em for a bit
The abrasions on the seeds coating from your sandpaper box contraption, help’s boost germination rates.
I know this question is old, maybe you've found something and could share it but I use grapeseed extract when I'm germinating seeds for my birds. I was thinking of trying that.
Do the spinach go under lights
no because we found it bolts to fast and we don't get the production
do i start my lettuce the same way as spinach
no
Is there any problem if didn't add this 1:09?
You may still get some to germinate, but we add the hydrogen peroxide to help break open the seed coat.
Thank you for the information! So after the radical is exposed after 36 hours, they are still in the dark for approximately another week before heading to the greenhouse?
That's correct. We check on them once or twice a day, and once we see the little leaves coming up, they go into the greenhouse.
Good luck 😃
Very useful knowledge !! Thank you both.. can I ask, how much light does she expose the seedlings to and for how long ?
Yes of course. I'll have to ask her tomorrow to be sure, but I know she has grow lights for the nursery that come on for a few hours after dusk.
Thanks for so many educative, well made and inspiring videos,
Now i know how to germinate spinach correctly : )
impressive hardworker family !
Highest temperature in your hometown during summer?
It rarely gets over 100°F. The hottest day of the year usually tops out at 95°F or so.
@@HomegrownPassion also why don't you try Mushroom cultivation 😀
Thanks for sharing 👍🌎
Yep and thanks for watching! Are you interested in hydroponics?
Hi I have one question does water need to flow 24hrs?
Hi! Yes water flows 24 hours in the NFT channels where the spinach grows. When we get the Bato buckets going, I will make a video on them. Water only flows once an hour or so to those. In the grow bags with the perlite/vermiculite mixture, we water those once or twice a day.
@@HomegrownPassion Thank you so much. Waiting for your next video.👍
thanks! didn't know they need hydrogen peroxide
Almost 300👊👊
👊 Yes it's crazy I'm excited 😁
how many times do you cut them ? :)
A bunch of times! They do so well when we keep them trimmed up. It all depends on the weather, but we've gotten 7 or 8 cuttings before they needed pulled or bolted.
I actually have a swimming pool with fish in it. I plan to float plants on styrofoam.
Awesome Let us know how it goes!
Agree!!
Would this method work for cilantro seeds? What method do you guys use for cilantro seeds?
We plant the cilantro right into the Oasis cubes, but this method would work too. We've been on a micro cilantro kick recently and plant it just like our other microgreens.
@@HomegrownPassion awesome. Thanks for the reply. On average, how many days does your cilantro take to germinate?
Hi ladies, what strength or percentage is your peroxide? 🤓
They don't say in the video but I think they're using a 3% solution that they mix with water.
Thank you this is correct.
It's 3% and we just get it at the drug store.
@@HomegrownPassion awesome thanks for your response 🤓
Hydrogen Peroxide 😍😍😍😍😍😍
Everybody says 5 to 10 days for germination. But you get it to germinate in 36 hrs?
Yes because the seeds have already started to sprout in the paper towels. We forgot to check on them once after a day, and they got very leggy fast. Now we know to keep a close eye.
Any explanation vid available for the nursery?
"Put in nursery and cover again until they start growing. Leave in nursery for about a week, then place in channels."
We will address that in an upcoming video. You're right a little vague. Watch some of the latter videos and it might be answered. Thank you.
I'll try to copy this method cuz experience is talking. Oh talking about experience loj how she have those Hogs
Super good
I tried it and it did not work.
What is the size of your Greenhouse? Is it 10,000 square feet?
The main greenhouse is 5000 square feet and the high tunnel is probably 3500 or so.
Here's the unitua-cam.com/video/A6qltypI4eg/v-deo.html
Do the pigs have names? 🙃
No hahaha my sister and I used to name them when we were kids, but they haven't gotten names for a while.
👍
Thank you!
Not afraid to get dirty in the pig pen!
That's right! I don't mind at all 😁
Dear friend Have a great day. Nice overview hydroponic Spinach green house 🌸💖👌
Thanks friend! Hope you have a good day as well and a good weekend. 😊
Could you not just soak the cubes and skip the plate?
You could do that, but we like to use the plate so we can see which seeds sprouted and not waste cubes on seeds that won’t sprout.
