- Dhanushkodi, a ghost town, has become a home away from home for 22 families like this one, fleeing Sri Lanka in the face of the economic crisis.
Dhanushkodi is on the south-eastern tip of Pamban Island in Tamil Nadu. It is 24 kilometres west of Talaimannar in Sri Lanka, separated by the ocean.
Despite being an abandoned town, it is a land of promise for many Sri Lankan refugees. From Dhanushkodi, they reach Mandapam town in Ramanathapuram district where they will settle.
They make their way into the camp where a new life awaits. They find jobs in Ramanathapuram or venture into other parts of Tamil Nadu.
The camp in Mandapam has been a safe haven for many Sri Lankans who escaped to India since 2005 - their only hope after fleeing a war-torn nation. This camp was originally set up by the Sri Lankan government in 1917. It was a quarantine camp for labourers from different parts of Tamil Nadu, who were being taken by the British government to work in tea estates in Sri Lanka.
Dhanushkodi is also popular among tourists. Ruined buildings and skeletons of a once alive town attract them. Shacks that sell trinkets and curries with the fresh catch from the sea entice the tourists as well. Flamingos also visit Dhanushodi in September to enjoy their share of the ocean’s offerings. Olive ridleys can be found nesting here in May.
Before the deadly cyclone of 1964 ravaged Dhanushkodi, it was a bustling town. A ferry service once linked Dhanushkodi and Talaimannar as part of the Indo-Ceylon Railway service.
With every cyclone and crisis, a bit of Dhanushkodi gets destroyed. Amidst the ruins, there is still hope left. Another family waits across the ocean to take a perilous ride towards survival.

I think the sri Lankan Navy was sleeping when the sri Lanka people reaching the indian coast, but they were active only when innocent indian fisherman crossing the invisible border 😒

Yesterday we were at dhanushkodi..
Wow 😳

To all the people who are talking about taking in all the Tamils of Sri Lanka... No, it's wrong and shouldn't happen, they have the right to live in their own country, they are refugees HERE and not there.... If anything the Indian govt should do is that they should insure that the tamils are not prosecuted in their own country, enough with the discrimination... Weather it's India or Sri Lanka or any other country the minorities deserve to have a good and peaceful life in their own country.

@@kathir6881 what!?
No they are NOT, they have been there for ages, more like 2000 years to be precise, it was their ancestors who settled there.. And the "Ukraine" analogy doesn't make ANY sense whatsoever... And even I were to entertain that analogy here's a thing, that Indian person who has an Ukrainian citizenship still has legal and moral right to live in that country if he's forced out illegally.
@@kathir6881 they are Indians,
if they are born in India.
@@kathir6881going or not going is their wish.
but srilankan Tamil are not Indian Tamils,
they are not born in India.
sl is their motherland and not India.
and their ancestors went their before many centuries and they are not Indians.
So true also, they have developed a unique dialect and some customs different from tamilnadu, all of which will be lost if they are mingled into tamilnadu population
I would rather call it the beginning of the end. Just like how Hanuman set fire when it was filled with asuras, the people are literally setting fire to the heartless genocidal asuras of rajapakshe, know that when sri lanka falls the world falls.
Sri Lanka fell; the world has not fallen
sri lanka is just a small island that's it.
it's fall won't affect the world.
I mean to say that the World is not gonna fall if srilanka falls.
how it is that they are allowed into our country
Sri Lankan Tamils are originally from the Tamil Nadu region. Homecoming, isn't it?
Okay so if people from Bangladesh Or Pakistan start coming back to India then that will be homecoming too rite????
no they are not,
they settled there before centuries and sl is their mother land not India.

Government should help them.
It is time for India to pay some 5-10 billion USD to Sri Lanka in exchange of its Tamil majority North Eastern region..
I heard these places in Wings of Fire 😅
All the Ill deeds which Sri Lanka did to Tamils for that only now they are facing this crisis. But the only sad thing is that innocent Sri Lankan people are also facing problem.
Karma is a boomerang,
they made ppl(Tamil minorities)to suffer that's why they are suffering now.
Please, government of India, help them. They are Hindus too.
How do they come illegaly even after Indian Navy and Coastguard
Help from TamilNadu politicians
I hope all the refugees are documented & looked after in accordance to relevant policies. SL traditionally has been a friend & as such at the moment, I think SL is, indirectly or directly, particularly vulnerable to evangelists or other kind of vultures (foreign influences).
Please we need to protect our land....they should not enter it..later on they will declare themselves as minority in India and will demand separate status or even a separate land...tese were the people who were always against our tamilian brothers ...and they discriminate and fire on our fishermen as well
But they are looking like Hindus & buddhist
Hindus don't do this ..
@@purnimadas597 yes dear but most of them are senhali's (proper srilankan)not the Hindus and Buddhists and like our Tamil brothers and sisters
Tamil Nadu should only welcome Tamil refugees and give citizenship to Tamils. Sinhalas and Muslims should be blocked from entering. But now only Tamil refugees are coming, we can welcome them.
@@user-pf5do5ep1p 💯 bro
India should open arms to the friendly neighbours.... I am sure things will be fine in Sri Lanka and these people can return home..
Deadly Cyclone 1964... Seems there was a reason.. not to be there.
Go back go back to Srilanka.
Kick them out no illegal immigration in the country
