I'm a big time Jess apologist and this was always one of my favorite episodes, but woof. The "16 year old girl with a crush" in me still gets it, but 35 year old me is screaming, "GIRL GET IT TOGETHER."
I am one too, but I shipped them more when he got his act together and matured. I feel he and Rory can support each other even with time and distance between them. But Jess wasn’t the greatest in earlier seasons, but I feel a lot of his actions were a cry for help that no one but Luke paid attention to. Not justifying every action he did, but felt bad that no one except Luke wanted to help, challenge, or guide him.
I am absolutely obsessed with you utter confusion about why Rory keeps doing and saying the things she does in regards to Jess. She's a 16yr old with a crush, that's where the logic comes out of the window. xD Great episode!
18:46-18:57 I'm telling you, the first time I watched GG this entire arc infuriated me lmao. She basically described going on a date with another guy when she blew Dean off
I totally agree. Putting aside that Rory shouldn't have had lunch with Jess, regardless of tradition and absolutely shouldn't have gone somewhere private with him, it didn't even end with a quick lunch, because she went off book shopping with him. That was absolutely a date.
THANK You!!! I hate how people get mad at Dean like Rory wasn’t gaslighting him the whole time 😭 and for Jess who didn’t call her, crashed her car and forced himself on her. But he reads so all is forgiven 😴😴😴
And even the Jess reading thing is BS. Dean read, and he'd read books that Rory liked to make her happy. Dean deserved much better. Rory treated him like dirt, then when he got pissed about it, people act like he's so unreasonable. Dean has his flaws, but they don't even come close to justifying Rory's behavior. Dean is a much better human than either Jess or Rory. I know people keep making excuses for Rory because she was "16," which actually she was 17 by this time, but when I was 16, I wouldn't have given aggressive, toxic Jess the time of day. Someone doesn't need to be an adult to see how selfish and nasty Jess is. When I was that age, I would've easily picked Dean any day of the week.
I love Jess for his character arc, but I definitely feel like Rory didn’t respect Dean and their relationship when it came to him. Especially if you have a crush, you don’t put yourself in these situations. Big misstep here

Yeah Dean was 100% in the right here. He expressed a boundary and she dgaf. When u are trying to understand where someones coming from u should flip the roles and see if you'd be cool with what ur doing. Some people just don't think that way.
I always think of this as the “omg I want a goat cheese stuffed pretzel basket filled with food and desserts!” episode. One of my favorite over the top Sookie creations.
I’m currently watching this without my husband but I’m going to have to show him later, because everything you’re saying about Dean/Rory/Jess is exactly what he says🤣🤣 He gets very upset for Dean 🙏
Yep, me and my husband agree on the crappy way Rory treated Dean. Dean deserved much better. Rory treated him like dirt, then when he got pissed about it, people act like he's so unreasonable. Dean has his flaws, but they don't even come close to justifying Rory's behavior. Dean is a much better human than either Jess or Rory. I grew up in a big house and snuck out the window and down the tree too. It really is the best manner of sneaking out. Doors make noise and so do hardwood floors 😳
This so much! I get that Jackson was hurt that he thought they weren't on the same page in terms of commitment, but that doesn't justify him leaving Sookie hanging when he knew she made that basket specifically for him. The time and effort she put into that basket showed her commitment.
Finally someone who's not brainwashed by Jess! Dean's actions here were 100% vaild and I'm so tired of people trying to make him look like the bad guy.
THIS! Making Dean the bad guy in this is pure gaslighting. Dean deserved much better. Rory treated him like dirt, then when he got pissed about it, people act like he's so unreasonable. @ Exactly! Dean deserved sm better during their relationship. Jess was clearly into Rory and trying to take her from Dean and Rory was entertaining it. She had feelings for Jess but didn’t break up with Dean and kept stringing him along. She even kissed Jess while she was still with Dean. I also hate how people shit on Dean for breaking up with Rory in a public setting but imagine how he must’ve felt listening to Rory whine about Jess all night. And the minute he broke up with her she went to Jess.
@@mysticfilmz, Yeah, people get mad at Dean for breaking up with Rory in a public setting, but they ignore her publicly humiliating Dean, mooning over Jess at a town event for all to see. To me, Dean showed some much needed self respect and self preservation. If he hadn't broken up with her then, how much longer would she have strung him along, making him her doormat? Her behavior did psychological/emotional damage to him, and that impacted his choices in later.
When they are first dating, Dean is great and Rory is 100% what drives them apart. When they try dating again, Dean is very much in the wrong in a lot of ways, but Rory has no moral backbone. By and large, Rory is the one causing the problems in her own relationships.
I love this episode because of Jackson & Sukie, Luke & Lorelai, and poor Lane. As someone who prefers direct communication I emphasized with Suki in this episode. Don't just hint at something then get mad at me if I don't pick it up. Just ask. Be direct. Jackson was such a drama queen.

Yeah there were some episodes Jess was a jerk in but Dean had his share too. I actually think 99% of the love interests in the show are terrible lol. But Rory definitely led Jess on and hung onto Dean when they should have broken up. Will you ever watch the revival? It's a complete mess so you'll have plenty of confusion if you watch it in order lol
Well your prediction about Kirk was wrong, but you still demonstrated how well you truly GET him. I feel like Rory wants to be liked by everyone so badly, and be as independent as her mom, that she doesn't look at things from anyone else's perspective. She did have a crush, but is in denial. And, thinks she's acting totally reasonably. It's okay to have a male friend, as a girl in a relationship with a different guy. But, not with a guy that is purposely putting himself in-between the girl and her boyfriend, every chance he gets.
I've said it before and I will say it again. Rory was an introvert back then and she mistook his interest with her with just vibing with him. I don't like the behaviour on any of them, but Rory was very naive in those early season, also she is very VERY bad at confrontations. Nice detail: The people in the diner are not reacting to Lorali's screaming because she does it so much AND Luke leaving the diner because he does it so much. Nice detail number two: the people in the back with the baskets eating, it is so sweet. And Lorelai and Luke AND Jess and Rory got the most beautiful spots in Stars Hollow to eat their baskets.
So aside from her growing attraction to Jess, Rory does the diffusing/defending conflict avoidance stuff because it's something she picked up from Lorelai. If you notice a lot of Lorelai's interactions (mostly notably with Chris) even when Lor is in big time conflict with someone, she never really models that it's okay for Rory to be angry with that same person. Instead, she always does this weird devil's advocate, "Oh honey, think of how they're feeling, this is why they feel so strongly and act this way" perspective thing. So Lor is allowed to be angry, but she creates an ongoing dynamic where she "relieves" Rory's agency to be rightfully upset and experience anger in a practiced and healthy way. It's incredibly frustrating to witness, and it's one of the many things that throws Rory's ability to identify blame to the right sources way out of balance. Rory does the exact same thing here (obviously with different results because Dean didn't grow up with this modeling so he responds like the audience mostly does, like "wtf this is so obvious") because it's what she was taught to do when she feels conflict rising: diffuse, omit, obfuscate, if gets calming results.
Love your commentary. Always hated Jess, but then again I also hate Rory and Lorelai and about 80% of the characters on this show. Why did I ever watch this show? I don't know, but again, I love your commentary.
1. Rory is 100% a horrible girlfriend. 2. As a woman I think there is a huge issue here in Dean's attempts to answer *for* Rory--it goes along with why I stopped liking him after he broke up with her for not being able to say she loved him. 3. I like Jess. Yes, he is pursuing her. But as you pointed out, she's reciprocating. He's interesting, he likes the same things she likes, and he makes her feel like she's the most worthwhile--the ONLY worthwhile person in the entire town. So she's reciprocating and he's acting on that. You can blame Jess for stirring up trouble, but this is not his best friend's girl; Dean is a guy who treated him like a loser and problem from the start. He owes him no respect or deference. So as long as Rory shows interest, he's going to see if he can get her.
I'm sorry, "Who's John Cleese" ? - Fawlty Towers, most famous member of the Monty Python movies + show, was Nearly Headless Nick in the HP movies, was the headmaster in the Spud movies with Troye Sivan, & was in Time Bandits. Bit of a D*** IRL by all accounts from interviews, etc.
Everyone is wrong. People shouldn't be judging people they dont know, teenagers need guidance but have to be allowed to make mistakes, Rory is absolutely stupid, Dean is jealous (rightfully) but consistently communicates with angry outbursts, and obviously Jess is a jerk here. On a separate note, I love love love these videos of yours!
Yeah I’ve always been a dean fan. Rory is completely in the wrong. I’ve always thought Rory was spoiled and every one sees her as perfect, definitely not perfect or thinking of dean in this episode
okay, listen, i hear y'all saying Jess is butting in and Rory is gaslighting him and fine. Okay. But Dean?! He is such a traditionalist it annoys the crap out of me. hence my favourite episode remains "The Party's Over" because we finally see the kast of him :D
yo ion think its rorys fault that someone else is annoying her lol not her doing, like yeah she couldve told him off but she Did try to keep peace nd not cause any drama and she does not want to be disliked by people
I'm not sure which quote you're talking about but I have guess. Regardless, I think he was distracted by Jess being such a creep in this episode, which really makes nothing Jess said a good quote.
Look, I am not really a fan of the idea of women making these baskets for men to bid on for their date but that is actually the way this works, so yeah Rory does have to go on the date And as for her not shutting him down yet this is the 90s women don’t do that actually women don’t even do that in 2023 because it’s dangerous when we do we die when we get to directing our rejections so it’s not surprising a 16 year old girl wouldn’t know how to reject a guy properly there’s 30 old women still trying to figure out how to do it without getting ourselves killed
No she doesn't, being on her boyfriend's side is more important than a stupid tradition. She went on that date because she had a crush on Jess and Dean knew that
@ no, sticking by your principles for standing by Town tradition is more important than bending to your boyfriend Sorry you never learns to have self-esteem?
Rory has never had a problem shutting guys down before, so I don't think she was considering that Jess might kill her if she did. If she were thinking along those lines, I doubt she would have gone to the second location.
@ no women don’t do it now because we know it’s dangerous in the 90s we were still conditioned to be nice all the time just for the sake of if we weren’t we were a bitch now women know that ghosting kind of the way to go if you want to live
Are Rory and Dean exclusive? They are dating but they are not married. At times I think both of them, even Rory, have had some expectation of exclusivity, but it has never been formalized (in my opinion). They are too young to be that serious. Dean however, does see the situation for what it is. Maybe he should take the initiative and break up with Rory. Can't force someone to like you. I understand both of these guys. Neither is thinking clearly. They both want something they can't have. Jess is not stable and dependable enough to have the relationship he wants with Rory. Dean seems to unfortunately have lost Rory's interest in him. The situation is tragic for both of them. Why did Emily not realize that her agreeing with Lorelai on this matter would make Lorelai back off? Are they still that estranged? Or was it deliberate? Did Emily get the outcome she wanted? Is she anticipating that this new problematic relationship will never last, and is she manipulating Lorelai to get Rory to back out of what Emily sees as too serious of a relationship (with Dean) for a young girl like Rory. Honestly I don't see any evidence for this proposed thought process in this episode and I can't remember exactly what the prevailing dynamic is between Emily and Lorelai at this point in time, that being said, Emily certainly has the ability to play the long game and I would not put it past her to be strategically manipulative (which I see as a good thing in select circumstances.)
Yes, they are exclusive and have said "I love you" to each other at this point. I don't think Dean is unreasonable for thinking she likes him or for thinking Jess is an issue. I think Emily thought her approval would encourage Lorelai since it was a path she was already on.
"why is she so big on defending him" because she's attracted to him and will never stop gaslighting dean about it

okay, listen, i hear y'all saying Jess is butting in and Rory is gaslighting him and fine. Okay. But Dean?! He is such a traditionalist it annoys the crap out of me. hence my favourite episode remains "The Party's Over" because we finally see the kast of him :D
yo ion think its rorys fault that someone else is annoying her lol not her doing, like yeah she couldve told him off but she Did try to keep peace nd not cause any drama and she does not want to be disliked by people
Can’t believe you missed one of the best quotes from Jess in this episode!!
I'm not sure which quote you're talking about but I have guess. Regardless, I think he was distracted by Jess being such a creep in this episode, which really makes nothing Jess said a good quote.
Guy who didn't bring enough money?
Look, I am not really a fan of the idea of women making these baskets for men to bid on for their date but that is actually the way this works, so yeah Rory does have to go on the date
And as for her not shutting him down yet this is the 90s women don’t do that actually women don’t even do that in 2023 because it’s dangerous when we do we die when we get to directing our rejections so it’s not surprising a 16 year old girl wouldn’t know how to reject a guy properly there’s 30 old women still trying to figure out how to do it without getting ourselves killed
No she doesn't, being on her boyfriend's side is more important than a stupid tradition. She went on that date because she had a crush on Jess and Dean knew that
@ no, sticking by your principles for standing by Town tradition is more important than bending to your boyfriend
Sorry you never learns to have self-esteem?
Rory has never had a problem shutting guys down before, so I don't think she was considering that Jess might kill her if she did. If she were thinking along those lines, I doubt she would have gone to the second location.
@ no women don’t do it now because we know it’s dangerous in the 90s we were still conditioned to be nice all the time just for the sake of if we weren’t we were a bitch now women know that ghosting kind of the way to go if you want to live
They both suck, TEAM LOGAN!
WTF is wrong with you? Of course they're exclusive
Yes, they are exclusive and have said "I love you" to each other at this point. I don't think Dean is unreasonable for thinking she likes him or for thinking Jess is an issue. I think Emily thought her approval would encourage Lorelai since it was a path she was already on.
i’m not a big dean fan but he is in the right here.
also i love how you never stop pushing the dean/lorelai agenda.
