  • Looking for a place to stay in Alpe d’Huez?
We still have our Magical Chalet available for the week of the 18th of February!
Check our virtual tour - chaletmagique....
Ischgl's steepest slope: a gradient of up to 70% awaits you at slope 14a.
Unlike some of the other steep pistes in Europe, the gradient is pretty consistent for 2km by which time you will have descended over 650 metres.
It's the most challenging pisted run in Ischgl I had really good conditions in early January 2020. This was filmed on the GoPro hero 7 black in 4k 60fps. I added the speed dials using the GoPro app.
Ischgl is one of my favourite mountains/resorts in the Alpes so I couldn't encourage you more to visit.

I hit 68mph once at Stevens Pass in Washington State back in 2010. 60 is pretty easy to hit if traffic is light and the snow is well-groomed.

As someone who’s skied many slopes around 70% grade I think it’s pretty safe to say that’s about 35 degrees if being generous

    • @davesmulders3931
      @davesmulders3931 2 роки тому +26

As someone who skied this slope many times (and even last week) I can confirm the most steep part is not the entrance of the slope, but the part after the narrow path (which is labelled 14c). 70% grade is exactly 35 degrees, so I am not sure what you are trying to say? All 70% grade pistes are 35 degrees.
That is quite steep on ski's. The Harakiri in Mayrhofen is 78% or 38 degrees, which is not much steeper than this run. People that call 70% a red run obviously have no experience skiing whatsoever.

@@Marchah Let's keep this discussion in English :) Wether a slope is icy changes every week. Mostly in March, most slopes are icy in the morning, and a bit soft from noon. Actually, currently due to high temperatures, intermediates and even beginners can safely ski most black runs.... they are so slushy that it's very easy to control your speed on them.
Remember that a 78% slope isn't 78% all the way. The run in this video is actually very steep after the narrow path. It just doesn't show on camera.

@@mattwachsman4937 I've tracked my speed with an app before and I can say that 40+ feels FAST. This is coming from an adrenaline junkie too lol. I kept trying to break 50 and I could only do it like twice because it was hard to find a slope that was steep enough even when straight lining and crouching to be more streamlined. Keeping left at the top of the Palinkopf brings you onto the start of the 'Smuggler's Run', which takes you into the Samnaun Valley in Switzerland. It's a great place to stop for a rosti or beer. BTW, I had my brand new Stocklis stolen from a ski-rack outside the Ice Bar, which you passed at the bottom of the Hollencar at the end. The Ice Bar was usually an early-morning haunt for coffees, before it became inundated with posers flaunting all the latest gear and never skiing.

Try 7a. It's a red run with a fairly steep pitch of 42 degrees (or 90%). It used to be black but hey, you need a red run down the valley so now it's red. That is the steepest run of Ischgl, and... the best part is the steepest part is so narrow you cannot pass anyone. Seeing it's branded red, also novices go down that route, so better bring your a-game to avoid accidents.

Dont understand why so many peoples have such problems with the difference between degrees and %. 70% is a very steep pist, it does not exist any 70 degrees pist anywhere on this planet. An extreme alpine terrain thats as steep as 70 degrees is not really skiable.
Regardless if this specific pist is marked as black, it shouldn't be. It's true that its extremely hard to show how steep a slope is on a picture or video, but if you are a good skier it is not really that hard to judge the steepness and difficulty of a slope just by watching the other skiers going down this pist. Watching this video I would say that twice (1:10-1:30 and 2:10-2:30), this pist could be considered having a difficulty for being red, the rest should be blue. I doubt very much that this piste have a single meter with an angle of 70%.
Nothing of this really matters, what matters is if you enjoy skiing the slope or not.

I skied in Ischgl in March last year, got infected with the corona virus but it was hella worth it. The flight home was the worst though, thought I'd pass out couple a times loool. Couldn't breath at all 🤣

The fish eye effect of the go pro dampens the impact of the slope, known as the go pro effect. I imagine that the slope is a black because for portions of it it contains long stretches of steep terrain with no easy way for a skier to stop if they do fall.

1:15 really stepping into it. The difficulty seems lower because of the lack of idiots out of their depth. It seemed like pretty pro skiers riding with you. The hardest part at the end when you hit 60 mph was avoiding hitting the other skiers/riders on the merge IMO. Beautiful scenery. It seems you are surrounded by mountains so vertigo isn't as bad as it would be on that grade.
Keep having fun. Love your videos.
