"I'm gonna defeat you with the Power of friendship and this *gun* i found!"
- any Pokémon with max affection talking to a shadow Pokémon
The best part is that even the "True Shadow Pokémon" are all capable of being purified through positive emotions. Celebi was saved by Sam's love for it, Shadow Lugia can be purified in the Purify Chamber at it's highest tempo, and Shadow Mewtwo was defeated through Synergy Power (literally the energy of people connecting to nature).
Yeah, its amazing that they let us right the wrongs in the Orre games (and Go) and purify all the shadow Pokemon we rescue. I don't care if a Pokemon is virtually as strong as a god, if it has its free will taken from it, you can bet I'll do everything I can to get their free will back, even if it becomes weaker than a Sunkern!
Just makes me wish Shadow Pokemon were added to main games. There could be a snag agent going about their business on the sidelines while you have the usual journey, and Shadow Pokemon could act as genuinely tough boss level Pokemon for admins
That would be awesome, who knows maybe legends could have them. After all we are going to see a new sinoh
@@GcorpCoPrez They were in the Gamecube game first though. In XD Gale of Darkness, Shadow was kind of a psuedo type where Shadow moves were super effective against non Shadow Pokemon but not effective against other Shadow Pokemon. It was decent encouragement not to purify your team too quickly
@@alpharabbit2353 oh I know. I own both games. OP wished for main game shadows. They are in but in a phone game.
You could also have them be battled kinda like totem pokemon, where they are treated sorta like wild battles but they get stat boosts at the beggining of every fight
I hope pokémon colosseum and XD gale of darkness will get the sequel they deserve some day
I think they deserve a remake, but not a normal remake, a Legends Arceus type remake, so that they can take the game into new exciting directions with an open world system
@@jeremyetremblay6663 no I mean the same game but remade with an open world system, so that we can explore the region more, do side quests, and then we can include it in the main game timeline
@@petharaguruge2023 i think you forgot a couple of problem with that idea there bud
@@petharaguruge2023 So you want a open world that is basically 90% lifeless desert.
You do remember that they are no wild pokemon in the Frist game and in XD they can only be found at like 4 spots
So.... Anybody want to start a petition for them to give Colosseum the Pokemon snap treatment?
Late to this discussion but, me as well! Never played the game myself though, and with the newly added mon type (alpha) from Arceus being transferred positive. Imagine the competitive scene losing their minds at Shadow Pokemon in tournaments.
Turning Pokémon into a more aggressive Shadow version of themselves is just horrifying.
@Ashmander was it a movie or game, cuz if game are you talking about pokemon tower defense 2?
It's rather disturbing when you realize that it isn't really anything different than what happens in our world. It's like dog fighting, people don't see Pokemon as living, breathing creatures, but rather as tools used for their own selfish desires. For Pokemon it's all for power, and the dogs I assume is just for fun (I don't even want to search up why these people do what they do. Just the thought of my dog being brutally mauled and even killed for some "sport" is horrifying enough).
@@Wings_Of_Nightfall only thing is that Pokemon are practically magical and we don't have machines and medicine that can instantly heal you from injures, but you are right, it adds a sense of seriousness into Pokemon
08:45 I think the A-Z Floette is also supposed to be a Battle Bond form.
@@BirdKeeperToby Maybe its form is permanent because its immortal.
After replaying Pokemon XD, as well as loving the absolute hell out of the Pokemon movie with Celebi and the Dark Tyranitar, I'm BEYOND stoked about this!
I love theories that use evidence from all over the franchise.
"If I had to travel with Ash, I would be grumpy too."
Same
I hate that the mega pokemon were all given horrible pokedex enteries. It's like game freak was trying to ruin them for us.
They decided they didn't want to keep making them so they made them morally terrible.
In Pokémon GO you can also temporarily boost a Pokémon CP by nurturing them into becoming Best Buddy Pokémon, by constantly trying to interact with them and have them gain hearts over time
It's not temporary if you keep it as your buddy constantly, as long as it is your buddy the CP boost will always be there
@@AdventVFX It's still temporary because of exactly what you said: in the case it's not your current buddy. I often switch up buddies if I want to reach Lv 5 Friendship with multiple buddies or if I need a quick switch to a Mega for Community Days
We need to show this video to prospective trainers *nods* Too many fall down the ultimately unsustainable quick routes to power.
"Mega evolution hurts Pokemon" is probably the worst walkback ever.
There's no explination for it other than "we dont want to put mega evolution in anymore games so uh... It's it's cruel to use."
i like to chalk it up to Alolan propaganda trying to make Mega Evolution sound worse to make Z-Moves seem better in comparison.
@@SpectroliteDS2400 In the anime Illima (First trial captain) uses a mega Kangaskan in the league and no Alola residents were offended or disgusted when he used it so I don’t think they’re against it.
I absolutely LOVE shadow Pokémon!
I've been shiny hunting them for a while now in the GameCube games and I really, really hope they make an appearance one day in future main games.
Also fun fact - the Suicune Goldstar trading card shows the shiny version of Shadow Suicune - if you find a shiny Shadow Suicune in Colosseum, it has a black mane.
Super great art!
And Primal Dialga's name in Japanese was Dark Dialga, and he became aggressive and merciless.
Even though Primal Dialga's not a Shadow Pokémon, I think it would've been kinda neat if he'd been called Shadow Dialga.
Shadow Pokémon are called Dark Pokémon in Japan, except in Pokémon Go.
@@AzureGreatheart Yeah Pokemon Go is the only place it's different as the litetal translation is "Shadow Pokemon" instead of the usual "Dark Pokemon" all other media containing Shadow Pokemon uses.
However considering how it contains pretty much the same effects of Orre Shadow Pokemon, being Stronger versions that can be purified, I think they're similar enoguh to be considered basically the same
This is easily one of my favorite theories of yours. Looking forward to the Illumina theory!
Perhaps partner pikachu/eevee are pure pokemon? Since their stats are higher than regular pikachu and eevee
I’ve actually been replaying the Orre games lately. They’re a good way to fill in gaps in your collection.
Something that can add to this is when the shadow mewtwo from Pokken takes recoil damage when ever it uses its Pokemon moves or "A" moves all doing recoil damage without (with the exception of Up "A" or 8A psystike) not having the usual red armor that drains HP. This can be seen as pushing it self to the limit similar to holding the "A" button with blaziken. Red armor can also be seen as a taxing attack such as with blaziken's blaze kick into flare blitz taking longer to come out, chandalure's overheat (8A) giving it double debuffs and being much weaker if she is debuffed and having a long recover animation, garchomp's burst attack and the mewtwos' psystike being minus on block (punishable tho u have to time the back dash for garchomp's burst)
I really love how connected the Pokemon world really is. There's always more to find!
Light Pokemon vs dark Pokemon sounds like pretty good plot for Pokemon game
The light Pokemon in Neo Destiny are some of the best art. Light Vaporeon to this day is still my favorite card art in ANY set.
This might be your best theory yet! It really ties in a lot of Pokemon media and lore that has been building for over 20 years since shadows were introduced in Colosseum. It also give Team Rocket a much more unified goal and realization that rivals the latter Pokemon villain teams.
The intro made me do a double take because I thought I had accidently clicked on a Vsauce video. 😆
Oh wow, you actually responded! Sorry, big fan. Keep up the great content!
Man was anyone else really concerned that Toby was going to tell us to make our Pokémon Shadow?
"Shadow lugia cannot be reverted back to normal"
A set of pokemon at max tempo: are you sure about that?
Absolutely loving the return to these intense, deep, lore-filled theories Toby! They're so interesting and seem to give you so much joy doing them, keep up the ever incredible work!!
As someone who fought Shadow Mewtwo in Pokken, I can confirm that its probably the most dangerous and destructive Pokemon there is.
That bastard can blow up planets if it wanted to.
Sounds like it could take most of the Sith Lords in Star Wars history. And considering what some of them can do, that's a scary thought.
What about that ranger game with the radio towers that act like the ones you said? Edit Its SHADOWS of almia
Winning a battle because your pokemon survived due to affection is the same as a shonen anime protagonist surviving a powerful deadly attack because of the power of friendship.
you really had me hanging until the very end when you finally mentioned Detective Pikachu 😅 i think you've finally solved this, i reckon the movie featuring Shadow Pokémon was why they made a small allusion to the Colosseum side series with that Lugia balloon
I really love your theory on the light/shadow Pokemon. It’s well explored. :)
We know why the caged bird sings... lmao
I just finished playing Gale of Darkness today. Great timing!
Sucks that Cipher isn't canon to the main games. I imagine with their methods they would be a bigger threat than most other teams and could make even more OP shadows past gen 3. Even the fact shadows are basically their own type in that they're effective against everything else would make them a menace even a weak shadow.
I wouldn’t compare Megas to Shadow. Shadow are in constant pain and lose free will. Megas used to be simply a power up from their positive emotions. The dex entries changed due to bitter developers. Besides the dex entries are written by kids and constantly wrong or exaggerated.
Everyone throws this around like it's a fact but where is it expressly said that dex entries are written by kids?
@@Masonio we literally play as a ten year old, writing the entries into our dex. If we didn’t, then our dex should be full when we get it
@@Masonio also, Legends Arceus premise is literally a ten year old writing the first sinnoh Pokédex
YESSS!! Excellent video! When you lay it out like this, I fall that much more in love with the IP and its consistency across the whole franchise. Pokémon has laid so much groundwork for decades of stories to come. Love your vids & can't wait for the theories on Illumina Pokémon and Pokémon Snap!
Toby gives me too much hope that game freak will come up with a story that has stuff like this in the future
XD gale of darkness will forever be my favorite Pokémon spin-off. Love the use of shadow Pokémon.
Hi I hope everyone is having a good day
Well so far no. It's 2:08 I had a huge curry last night but I threw up on my birthday yesterday. And I have to get up for my paper round in 5 hours and can not sleep. But hey, at least I have new Pokémon snap.
Bro amazing video. One of the best theory videos on this channel. Can't wait for next week's "light theory"
Great video Toby, been waiting for this for a while
Love the way you have a darker light theme for a darker concept
Love the video! It’s interesting to hear you condense and connect pieces of lore from many different sources in the Pokemon universe. Great job with this one :)
I will put in the work for the path of light.
I honestly want an orre remake someday. we're kinda just told that the doors to the Pokémon's heart is closed, but never really shown what that means exactly. it'd be really cool to see that expanded. capturing shadow pokemon from their corrupt trainers, and maybe a side quest or two where you save someone else's pokemon from a shadow'd state. it'd also be cool to see modern game mechanics like walking and amie interact with the shadow meter. also imagine the animations becoming more and more friendly and lively as the shadow meter goes down, that'd be really rewarding to see
It's implied that "closing the door to their heart" = turning them into a heartless, cold killing machine. There's even a scene early on in Colosseum where Shadow Makuhita outright attacks the player instead of their Pokemon!
Let's goo. Not gonna lie. I'm surprised not many peeps talk about this
In the TCG game there is a form not introduced in the games called Pokemon Break, where the pokemon get a bit stronger, gain a new unique move and are encased in a golden aura.
Two things: First don't think Mega Evolution doesn't really fit Mega Evolution seems to be more like Ultimate Alien transformations from Ben 10, inactive in gene expression and mutation.
Second according to Bulbapedia is that the term for Shadow Pokemon in XD is different than Go. Both are similar but in practice at least from what I read the Shadow Pokemon in Pokemon go appear to be the equivalent of pumping a Pokemon up with steroids opposed to messing with the Pokemons heart. Anyway that's just my take thank you for the theory.
Agreed, Shadow Pokemon in the Gamecube games and those in Go are complete opposites. Team Rocket shadow Pokemon are basically an advancement of dark Pokemon from the who feel nothing but rage, while Cipher's are completely apathedic. They're more like two different approaches to the same technology.
In the anime Team Plasma actually do something similar to the rage controller so there's another version of Team Rocket's technology out there somewhere.
4:57 Dr. Nanber(this is how it is written?) looks like a redhead Dr. Wily
Now THIS is a type of video I’ve been waiting for a lot longer than I care to admit I’ve been waiting for. Also I was waiting for you point out in the most recent mystery dungeon game Super Mystery Dungeon, mega evolution is possible for Pokémon who cannot but still use the Awakening Emera which causes the Pokémon to go into a berserk mode which asks very similar to the shadow phenomenon. Love something as old as this still has ties into current day Pokémon and the lore has been connected in a new way.
What about Z-Crystals? They're pieces of Necrozma's light.
you're theory videos are so good I think pokemon should actually make them canon
Lovrina is literally the Elle Woods of Pokemon. Give her a cute outfit change plus some fairy type Pokemon and there you have it folks, pokemon's first bimbo
I find it kinda ironic that the "Pure Shadow" pokemon are all Psychic type which can be considered a "pure" type. Meanwhile, the only "Pure Light" pokemon is a Dark type which is supposed to be the evil type 😂.
Another great video! This stuff is full of heart and it really shows, keep it up man! :D
I absolutely love your hair! It's cool that you decided to let it grow, it suits you.
They need to make remakes of both those pokemon games. I miss them, I loved the shadow pokemon gimmick, it added extra difficulty while not feeling forced
This video will be so good for my Pokémon dnd campaign
I kinda want something like the white rathalos from stories for a pokemon, where it is so pure that it could shake of the shadow power and even banish it out of another pokemon
I've been studying Shadow Pokemon myself, @Bird Keeper Toby and I can say the "Light Energy" and "Shadow Energy" are like Spirit Energy, both sides give power and forms, but the key difference is that Light Pokemon energy is able to gain power by basking in the aura of Pure-hearted entities and the users are able to be at their best in the long run, Shadow Energy on the other hand can only gain power by absorbing more Shadow Energy in lustful indugence, Shadow Energy is also the energy responsible for the "Pain" that Pokemon feel when they use Mega Evolution, Z-Power and Dynamaxing as the latter taps into the being of the Pokemon using them and Shadow Energy taps into the Mental Weakness of the ones that uses it. to say in a nutshell, Light Poke' Energy is the Power of Purity, of the Archangels while Shadow Poke' Energy is the Power of Corruption, of the Devil.
Interesting video. Never really thought about it, but max affection Pokémon being Light Pokémon kind of makes sense actually. It also makes me feel even better about giving my Mons love and attention, maxing out their affection. I don't care if it makes the game easier, I just like the feeling of having my Mons love me.
I find it interesting how people in pokemon go prefer shadow Pokemon over purified Pokemon
For many it's because shadow Pokemon get a significant boost in power. The strongest 'mon in all of PoGo is shadow Mewtwo.
Or maybe light Pokemon could be comparable to purified Pokemon from Pokemon Go. They were once corrupted by Team Go Rocket's shadow project, but with help and love from their trainer, have been calmed down, purified, and have become stronger (improved CP and IVs). Also they are surrounded in a white (light) aura
And every purified Pokemon gets the move return! A move with more power the higher the bond they share with a trainer
The rumor I heard about is that girl you mentioned that worked with team cipher being the girl with the pink hair is Namba's daughter who is testing his tech in orre.
Bird keeper toby the gen 7 mega dex entries are just rotom being mischievous and having some dark humor with the pokedex compare the differences between the entries in gen 6 vs gen 7
i been noticing a xd and colosseum nod in pokemon swsh, they made a new ribbon called national ribbon just for pokemon who were purified back in the gamecube games, plus sword and shield were the first mainline console games..beside lets go so i can see them makin a port or sequel to the gamecube games(the first games on a console with a story)
National Ribbon's been in the games since Colosseum and XD, actually; it's not a new thing.
Surprisingly enough, eevee was actually my first Pokemon because Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness was my first game
Shadow Pokemon are part of my Fanfiction.
The Idea is Aura/Infinity Energy has Light and Dark in it
An evil group however use only the Dark of the Powerful energy
While Aura Gaurdians practice the use of Light
Edit: Also just figured out
Shadow Pokemon = Pokemon of Darkness
Illumina Pokemon= Pokemon of Light
One side uses dark, the other the light. Anyone else besides me imagining pokemon star wars now?

"Hang tight and Ill tell you all about it"
The intro for this video was very well done.
I personally think that Battle Bond is a huge missed opportunity from Pokemon. It could become a really great story element and gimmick for the games. Maybe they'll do that in the future, maybe in Pokemon Z or something 😅. I'm still hoping for it's return as well as Mega Evolution.
Just now got around to watching this, and now I want to play Pokken Tournament and rewatch Detective Pikachu.
THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS! I was wondering if anyone would address the shadow Pokémon! This is the only thing I have seen on them full stop!
Huh. Imagine Mewtwo as a psychic/poison type. Really it just emphasizes the theme of it for me, it being a Kanto "most poison-types" Region 'mon, it being a tainted version of mew, and the somewhat questionable logic it follows in the first few movies.
You look more cinematic than usual.
A little snippet of dialogue from Pokémon Go suggests that Arlo invented the shadow Pokémon technology used by Team Rocket
Got reccomended this video as a casual pokemon fan... Had no idea the lore this was this deep
why theres always a constipated sounding ash ketchum at the end of your videos?
This looks like the look of a "maniac" who wanted to defend sword and shield, and lost everything including their hair doing so.
Great job Toby...
Well done man.............
Bird Keeper Toby I love your amazing video about the Pokémon nature’s and bonds with the forms they’re in since you’ve used really good strong facts
The girl who turned lugia to shadow lugia uses delcatty and luvdisc?
Noob
So, when I spend hours bouncing yarn balls to collect every decoration, I'm not wasting my time because I'm actually saving the world? I can live with that.
Ohhhh hell yes! As a *big* fan of SHADOW POKEMON it's great to see someone talk about them!
Wait what about AZ's flowet could that be a light Pokemon? I mean it's signature move is called a light of ruin.
Hey it's interesting that in pokemon go shadow pokemon can't mega-evolve, but in pokken mewtwo, who's fully completed it's transformation, can.
This is a great video, love these types of videos
Az's Floette is another type of 'light' pokemon id guess. I still feel as tho pokemon will one day lead theese half forms into a final unlockable permanent form possibly or atleast have a main stah form instead of a new gimmick each gen.
This is a really good video Toby I really wish the Pokémon company expanded the lure of shadow Pokémon with some of your ideas
Oooh toby you mind reader! I was just messing with my Dark pokemon cards yesterday :o
I want a remaster of these games so bad I miss them
Every time I hear about Mewtwo lore I'm reminded of mysterious cryptid clone Leaf
I just rewatched this video and I had an idea. What if they made an actual Shadow Lugia that, as a regional variant, was dark and actually modeled after yet slightly different than the XD-001 version? I'd love that just to say Shadow Lugia itself is somewhat canon as far as the mainline games are concerned
There, I believe, was a manga series someone (a fan) made in which Shadow Pokémon were infected with an illness, and that’s why you can only see shadow Pokémon in isolated regions like Oore. I think at some point, a shadow Eevee bites Wess, which infects him with the shadow illness.
I was waiting for when Detective Pikachu film would come into this. The purple eye, anger inducing drug made from mewtwo.
A huge thank you to everyone commenting and liking and a big big thank youto those supporting on Patreon (Link in the description) or checking out the merch store! Makes videos like this possible and I am having so much fun working on them! thank you Pokemon Masters!

Awwww ^_^ youre super welcome
okay i have a theory what if when team syther were destroyed some team rocket grunts stole what was left of there research and through a combination of the berserk gene and the remains of team sythers research they were able to make shadow pokemon but with out team sythers admin they weren't able to perfect it we know that team rocket does know about other evil teams because in the pokemon anime they knew about team plasma and they probably learnt how to make the armour for mewtwo from team plasma after project genasect so here a little bit to think about every time we stop a veil team another one gets stronger
#wantstojourney2021 please we need this
Hey Mr. Toby, here's a theory I've been thinking about, so we know Pokémon have a special energy in them, some call it Infinity energy. What if the devices being used in your examples are able to contaminated the energy with negativity causing the Pokémon to go berserk and unleashing all it's energy. It could even explain why Mega Stones cause the same thing, kinda. We know the stones are compressed energy from either Xerneas the Pokémon know to give energy and Yveltal the Pokémon that takes energy, maybe the conflicting energy in these stones help the Pokémon reach a higher step in evolution but since they aren't even near reaching this form the excess energy causes them to go berserk at times and this is why a trainer needs a strong bond to keep it in control of its surroundings and mind.
