I've always hoped it would be confirmed that the image was Anne Boleyn. I find the significance of Elizabeth's ring profoundly touching. I've only seen close up images. I had no idea how small it was. It must have been truly special to see the ring in person. Thank you for the video, Claire!

I would love to see it as well. It takes a long time to travel to the UK and now with the visa coming in I have missed my chance. I think it is Anne as well. I find it hard to believe it would be anyone but Anne

I always thought it was Anne Boleyn. Wonderful to see Anne and her daughter Elizabeth together. Beautiful ring.

Hi Claire! Good video as always. The second portrait in this ring has to be Anne Boleyn. I didn't realize until now that the movable part of the ring was Elizabeth; who else could Elizabeth rest on but Anne?. Why would Elizabeth favor a portrait of Catherine Parr who sent her away? It has to be Anne. Thanks again for the video!

Catherine Parr sent Elizabeth away because of the predator turd of a husband she had. It was for Elizabeth's protection.

What about Kat Astley, Elizabeth’s nanny? If not Anne Boleyn. How lucky you were to see the actual ring. But I agree with you Claire. It’s also great that this ring survived.

It’s so sad when a child looses their mother. Even though Elizabeth had no memory of her. She obviously had a strong connection or longing for Ann. She was really the only adult relative that did not disappoint her.

Thank you, Claire, for bringing this ring into “the spotlight” to examine. Knowing that I will not ever be able to travel to see these artifacts, I have one with the knowledge on whom to depend. I DO think it is Queen Elizabeth I & her beloved Mother inside the ring and that it was an item she cherished.

Thank you for the photo of the entire ring. I don't understand how someone could think the second portrait would be anyone but her mother. A visible miniature would be worn to show allegiance. I'm sure many Elizabethans wore miniatures of Elizabeth. But a hidden miniature shows loyalty and affection. I would not be surprised to learn that some secret Catholics wore jewellery that incorporated hidden Catholic symbols.
When you get a chance, and if it is possible, I would like to see a photo of the ring closed up to show it as it looked when it was worn. What is the diameter of the ring's "shank" (as I'm told it is called)? I know Elizabeth had long, small fingers.

Very fascinating. I had never heard about that ring. It does make perfect sense that it would be her mother. I just feel so bad that she never did get to know her mother. And the cruel way that her mother was treated had to be hard for her to know. Thank you for so many wonderful Background pieces that you share.. The Tudor period is one of my favorite subjects. I look forward to each of your videos. Thank you.

Considering how much of a Royal’s life was inventoried, especially Queen Elizabeth’s since her extensive wardrobe inventory still exists that you can purchase in book form today -is it odd it’s not recorded in record? Do records not exist to the level of detail I initially thought? I am a student of other cultures such as Ancient China and they kept meticulous records, I also thought England was similar due to the points I mentioned earlier. Or is it the full records don’t survive? I personally love reading inventories. I read Cardinal Wolsey’s of Hampton Court. I agree with your points in it being her mother it just strikes me that there is no more detail to confirm with certainty

  • @captainmorgan5449

Yes, I believe that is Anne. It is interesting that the ring was designed to close so the portrait could be hidden. Was Anne reputation still negative at that time? I heard KH8 destroyed all of Anne's portraits after she was beheaded.

    • @cherrytraveller5915
      @cherrytraveller5915 День тому +2

They did the same thing after Katherine was beheaded as well. It is possible that some of the portraits survived the cull however. Just like Henry missing their intertwined initials in Hampton court it is possible some portraits missed his notice

I think it has to be Anne as well. Why else would it bear such an incredible likeness to the only other known portrait of her? It honestly looks like it could have been painted with that famous portrait as the reference.

One thing to remember is that children up through partif the 19th century *did* wear miniature versions of adult clothing. It was somethibg that contributed to childhood fatalities, since there was no concept of safe clothing for children leaving them at the mercy of wide skirts and long sleeves, etc. Many family portraits show that once they were walking stablely they were put in the same style of clothing thst adults wore.
Having said that, to me it looks like AB. If it's an inset potrait perhaps the back of it could be examined, otherwise, we may never know.

It must be Anne and I really hope it is! I attended Tudor day at the CoA festival yesterday where I got to meet Henry, Catherine , princess Mary and ladies in waiting ( I may have made a risky joke in front of his majesty about me having a boy first) and Catherine's tomb was beautifully decorated. If anyone is interested the Catherine of Aragon festival is held at Peterborough cathedral every year for a week in the month of January. I would definitely recommend it :)

I believe you showed us the sketch by Hans Holbien the younger, of Anne in her morning attire had light colored hairs mixed in. The other colors may have faded over time but the blonde hairs hadn't. Anne's hair may not have been as dark as we think considering her sister Mary was on the blonde side. It's times like this I really wish we had a true portrait of what Anne looked like.

I guess it had to be tiny so that Elizabeth could keep it neatly tucked away from Henry. He may have forced her to get rid of it. I wonder if he ever knew she had it.

    • @cherrytraveller5915

Given the older picture of Elizabeth then it is easy to say that the ring was made several years after Henry had departed his life.

Good point! I never really observed it closely, but if it is an actual picture of Anne, then it may have been around during Henry’s time, hard to say.

Is there anything Elizabeth could have done to publicly redeem her mother’s name? I suppose it would have been very hard to do without casting a bad light on her father, Henry. The ring was absolutely gorgeous. I never knew it existed. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Ruby is the stone of royalty. The diamond might be for a queen consort. The mother of pearl is for a mom. I think it is queen Anne.

  • @dakotatwilight

It is well possible that reddish enamel especially if it was more auburn or darker red would have worn or faded in the enamel as red was not a very stable color and being g the top of the ring would have easily been nicked from closing and opening. My instinct says it is Anne.

Anne had black or dark brown eyes which wouldnt match with blonde hair, so hair colour black has been rubbed off with wear, in my opinion.

Maybe Elizabeth had a secret relationship with an other woman...
It is impossible I know.. they were so watched.. but how amusing if that is why the virgin queen wouldn't marry
