Best small easel? The Open Box M Review Pt.1

- I ordered this easel 9 months ago it has sat in a box until NOW. I wanted to film this review and then get it out for some field testing. The weather is finally warming up in Montana so the time is right.
Designed in 1989 and still going strong this easel is a mainstay in the Plein air world. Light, versatile, and time tested you can't go wrong with the Open Box M
I will take it out for a week of Plein air painting and report back in with my thoughts. Stay tuned for part 2!
(This is not a paid-for review in any way)
I purchased this on my own to enjoy and test. You can get yours on their website: www.openboxm.c...
This video was made with the help of my very talented friend Ben Jacobsen with Galactic Rabbit Films / @galacticrabbitfilms
My name is Kenneth Yarus and I am a painter from Montana. I love to get out into nature and bring my paints along. I am hoping to share my adventures and how I paint with the world. Thanks for watching!

What an incredible job! So amazing 👏
Thank you! Means a lot ;)
Nice Ken. I got my first one in mid 90's after seeing my workshop teacher and some other pros (PAPA's like Matt Smith) using the Open Box M. I have all 5 versions now! one 8x10 like your reiew, two 9x12's my faves, one to use and one as back-up, and the biggie the 11x14, not used too much. And the cute little thumb box, for 6x8's and such, also not used much. Like for all the reasons you said, especially hand made in the USA! Excellent customer service, and they last a long time if cared for. Put in a canvas bag to avoid the catchy things catching on your pack, like a swag bag you get at most plein air events for example. Use quick release and ball joint on my Bogen Manfredo heavy duty tripod (good for fending off javelinas and mountain lions while painting out here in southern AZ). Cheers!! :D
Hey Ron thanks for the comment and for sharing your experience with the Open Box M. I think I will get the 9x12 version next too. The canvas bag trick is very smart too! I was annoyed by it catching on my stuff but I love how strong and stable all the hardware is. Happy Painting!
Beautiful piece of equipment.
Hi, I Che led the website link but it looks like their page is down?

I took forever to edit this one. Summer time has been BUSY!
Nice review; thanks for helping out us newbies to plein air process. I caught your comment on the Aluminum panel and have been thinking about using Al for a while. The best solution I've found is that you can buy small panels of aluminum that have been anodized in an industrial process, giving the surface a very durable protective layer that you can paint directly on. Have you tried anodized aluminum as a painting surface?
Wow very cool I haven't been able to source anodized aluminum. I have opted for exterior sign board. It is thin aluminum with a core of plastic. There is a polymer face chemically etched onto the aluminum but you have to buff and gesso that surface. It works well as I can buy a 4x8ft sheet and cut them to many sizes.
Looking to buy one
Hi the link for the website does appear to work for the open box m ?
Thank you I'll check into that
They are out of business, no more open box M 😢
Looking to buy 11X14
How can I get one?
Sick bro
Thanks dude! You help motivate me so much to make video content.
Good morning! How to make a mechanism that fixes a stretcher on a sketchbook . Could you help me. I 'm doing it badly myself . I will be grateful and grateful ?
I am not totally sure what you mean?
Looks nice but I think the ugo one would be a lot more practical. Too many knobs and wing nuts etc to adjust, too many pieces that could get lost.
Nice Ken. this "open box m" is 8x10? or 10x12?
They make all kinds of sizes. This was the 8x10 version. I wish I bought the bigger one though...
Anyone have an Open Box M for sale?
Open box seems to have closed their business.
