.edu and .gov are only ever used by the USA. .gov could be used by anyone but the USA owns it and .edu has some outside of the US but they were using the domain before.

.local is a domain made for MDNS protocol. It's basically the same as DNS but instead of sending a query to the DNS server you're broadcasting it on the entire local network. It's made so you can use a URL instead of an IP address that is only valid on your local network. In sum up it's only for local ip addresses. Used for printers, smart TVs and IoT in general.

My issue with most of these newer TLDs is that sometimes URL/email validators don't recognize them, which can be a pain.
