A U459 would have a 12V71 Detroit for an engine, without exception. Brockway used the “letter code” before the model number to denote what engine the truck had….the U code was a 12v71, K code was an 8v71, E code was a 6-71, N code was an 855 Cummins, V code was a 903 Cummins and there were 2 more for caterpillar engines that I can’t recall but the available cat engines would have been the 1693, 3406A or 1673 / 1674. Brockway never offered Mack engines, transmissions, rears or suspensions as a factory option, although there are rumors of Glider kits with Mack power having been put together back in the day, although I’ve never seen even pictorial evidence of one before. Brockway was always a profitable company and in spite of this after a worker’s strike in 1977 Mack decided instead of making any concessions they would shut Brockway down, putting an entire town out of work and ending production of what many (including myself) consider the worlds best trucks. A little known fact related to this: Brockway actually designed what would become the Superliner, and if you look at several distinct features on the RW compared to the Brockway “800 series” prototype and drawings / plans, you’ll see the uncanny resemblance. The design for the Brockway model 860 was retouched slightly, mostly with small tweaks to make the cab and hood fit a modified Cruiseliner frame (an ultimately bad decision which led to the Superliner II in 1984). The Brockway version would, of course, have used Brockway’s proprietary house-built frames which had the unique distinction of being “custom built” for each truck in that while the rails and cross members were standardized catalog items, Brockway only drilled what holes were needed for each specific truck and the options it had. This meant that no Brockway ever left the factory with “extra” or unused holes in the frame. Something no other truck maker in the modern era has ever considered doing.

Riding the engine brakes ain't exactly smart. If you were in a real rig it would wear them out so quickly. That's what they make airbrakes and brake pads for.
