There's several ways to deal with a coconut. If you're already intending to toast the meat, just bake the things. The shell becomes brittle and usually splits during the roast. If you don't want to apply heat, just use the spine of your chef's knife or cleaver to give it a whack. An edged tool won't help much in controlling where the cracks develop, so just save the edges on your knives for other things.
But grocery store staffs do open coconuts with a knife or a machete, for that provides a clean opening .Probably we shouldn’t open it by prying with a delicate tip, but others would handled it just fine, additionally rocks can be dirty.
I have a Condor small parang (similar to the Condor Impossible Machete) which I use when at the beach. It can process palm branches etc & easily open coconuts in one swift chop. Not too big but certainly fit for purpose. Easily maintained. May not exactly meet requirements here but just for consideration. I wouldn't use a rock, first have to find one that will work, are far less precise and may require multiple strikes leaving you with smashed coconut & sore hands. Have a great day.
My go to “church” or dressing up knife has been a special run Delica that my wife bought me for our 5th anniversary…it has Damascus steel and Pakkawood…by far one of the nicest gifts I could’ve ever received and I cherish that knife.
The Condor Selknam would be another good knife for the coconut opening question since besides being a chunky fixed blade of appropriate length, the exposed element on the pommel is named the "Coconut Breaker".
Have actually opened coconuts using my para 3. Lightweight. No chopping, just shaving off the husk at certain angles then stabbing the shell to break it open.
I have a carbon steel (1095) Old Hickory cleaver which cost around $19 and it's been great! Cuts well, just keep it dry, a little oil on it and hit it with the ceramic hone once in awhile, good knife for the money! 👍
Being 55 and left handed I've learned to buy knives with double thumbstuds or move able like the kabar. Not all are. The liner lock has always been my easiest to use. Of course back locks are no problem but a lot of the specialty locks like compression and shark lock even though they don't look it and I can't explain it just don't work as well for lefties. I think most of that is because the clip is on wrong side on some.
Lefty here. Buck slim is a great knife..i use it in the garage alot...left friendly knives are hard to find. firearms are a nightmare too. I recently inherited a few older model pistols...only 1 , the Beretta .380 was ambidextrous. The classic Colt .45 1911 i recieved.....Pure right handed
As a hardcore lefty, after 35+ years working with/collecting knives I've just learnt to go with the flow. Lots of compromises & some modding along the way - either that or miss out on a lot of good knives. Also, as mentioned, the problems are more than just the clip, almost all locks are right hand biased even if the the knife is left hand carry. The only true ambi lock is the crossbar style lock ❤. My advice is find knives that work for you, work out how best to carry/deploy them and then practice. Sharp blades all.
I'm a simple right-handed commoner, a pleb, a serf, a nobody. I still reckon liner-locks feel pretty good used in the left hand, using your index instead of thumb. Mind you the axis lock stuff is the most obvious choice 😁
Honestly a great lefty as a user is the Delica in K390 specifically. Strops back so easy, and is just a workhorse. As a more premium option finding a left handed TR3 is always a good choice from Protech.
100%. Delica or the larger Endura are very versatile utility knives and in K390 you get a great performing (although not stainless) steel. Although can be a bit slower to deploy, backlocks are strong enough for most tasks. Have a great day.
Another great inexpensive lefty friendly is the ka-bar space force tanto. It has double thumbstuds out of the box and a reversible clip. It has Aus8 and it stayed relatively clean in my extremely sweaty and corrosive pockets.
Great reason to have a left handed operable knife is if you carry a gun on your right side. If you ever get into a physical fight and are trying to retain your gun, left can access the knife to stop the threat. I only carry my knife on my left while on duty.
The best folder for opening coconuts is the cold steel pocket bushman, strong, reliable, easy to keep sharp, tòok one for survival course, it did more work then i used my fixed blade for.
What are some good options for left handed carry flipper opening knives around 2.5 oz or under? Budget is $100 or less. Flippers are just my favorite opening method and I'm trying to lighten up my EDC for gym shorts season.
Hi there. I'm a butcher, so I already have a bunch of knives. I am not loyal to any one brand or style but I do like rubber handles which make it dishwasher safe. And yes, I wash them in the dishwasher. I sharpen them weekly and hone them constantly to keep the edge. They take a beating on lamb bones, chickens, pork and beef. My question is what would you recommend for a unique boning, simitar or butcher knife to add to the scabbard?
I have a leftie PM 2 and would love if Spyderco made more of their models for southpaws a leftie Military 2, Yojumbo/ Jimbo2, n Spydychef would be a must have for me!
Hi David, What is a good medium to small pocket knife that can be used as a pry bar? I keep giving my friend multi tools and pocket knives. He snaps the tips off the knife blades. Any suggestions?
Long Question; I have to cut back brush a couple of times a year, woody stemmed plants not very thick. This lines a ditch which is dry in summer but has water run off from the moorland behind our house. Access to it is limited, think about the width of your shoulders. I use a combination of saw, shears, and pruning cutters. But the space is narrow and awkward and in some places a thick sharp fixed blade with limited swing space might help near the roots. So sharp, not too long, easy to look after. Any idea what could do the job. Prefer a bit of corrosion resistance. I will use great care! (Budget, I was thinking a couple of hundred dollars would be plenty and I would use it for other jobs around the place).
As a hardcore lefty, I approve of this content! Back locks, button locks, crossbar locks, reversible clips. That about covers it! Liner locks are ok, frame locks not so much. 👍😎
Hi David, What is a good Tanto knife for someone wanting to experience the benefits of a Tanto blade shape? Strong tip, scraping, two blade edges, a secondary point for package opening, etc.
Hello DCA and Thomas, (The mild mannered snark hero, and fellow old truck collector!) I have a challenge for you: I have a young cousin, (20) who has just started his 'practical knife journey' into daily carry. I noticed he's currently carrying a gas station brand, and figured I'd give him an 'upgrade'. Now, here are the preferred requirements: 1: Under 3" and more work related/non-threatening, than 'tacticool'. He lives in a big city, and, although not illegal to carry 3+", I don't want it to add the biases the local constables already project. 2: 'Finger Safe', and fidget friendly. Would like to keep his digits safe, cause we ALL have those 'brain out' moments. Fidgety? To aid in 1 hand use. 3: Micarta, or G-10 would be nice, simply for grip. 4: Deep carry clip, and/or a lanyard hole. 5: And, lastly, I'd like it $100 or less, but, for a knife that ticks ALL the boxes, I'd go as high as $150. Think you could be a cut above, and slice out a few to meet my overly critical demands? (Thanks in Advance!)
I'd personally like to recommend another Real Steel. The Gslip. Ambi pocket clip and long nail fuller on both sides. VG 10 steel with either G10 or Micarta. Great little double detent knife. Sharp AF right out the box too
as a lefty, when i was trying to step up my game and buy my first non bali over 250 bucks, the first thing i noticed was that NONE of the high end knives were lefty friendly. and by "lefty friendly" i dont mean locking mech or deployment because were used to that, i couldnt use a lefty liner lock even if i tried, but just the simple idea of getting a left hand clip. they just dissapear after you get above 200 bucks. thats the reason why my collection now has pivoted towards spyderco because theyre not like the other brands that take away features for "aesthetics"
As a lefty I’m so ingrained with carrying a folding knife on my right side, drawing and opening, then switching it to my left hand that it almost seems like I might have an issue with a left hand friendly knife. Guess I need to get one to find out. Of course as a lefty I prefer fixed blades, because it’s way easier to make a left hand sheath for models that don’t have one available.
I like my CIVIVI, Sencut, and CJRB button locks. I'm a righty, but just in case I need to use the left hand, it's very easy to open and close. Just have to actuate the button with my left index finger instead of my thumb.
hey DCA, hey Thomas, i love the SAK Bantam. Is there a bigger option? Something similar to the Bantam's minimalism, but just larger blade, more hand-filling, while still only having 1 (or so) additional tool?
Hey DCA, I’m starting a new maintenance job at a Frito-Lay plant in a few days. My question for you is, what would be your preferred carry for potato chip manufacture?
I've got several (something like 7 - 10) knives I bought in the quest for my perfect for me pocket knives that just don't get used. They're all slightly used and have been carried. What's the best way to sell off these knives. We're talking about what I'd call mid tier knives ( $100 - $200 range) things like a Sypyderco PM 2, a BM 940, etc.
@@muskyman1018 the Bugout CF-Elite for most days. Spyderco Manix 2 for heavy use like lawn work. Kershaw Iridium for when I fly, in case I forget to put it in checked baggage and have to lose the knife to TSA. Being out $60 is much easier then Bugout prices.
That wood scaled spyderco is sick af for sure! Thanks a bunch for sharing your picks! Watching from the Cowichan Valley on Vancouver island in Canada! Cheers, Kimmers and Jerbs 👍🏻🇺🇸🔥🔪🔥🇨🇦👍🏻
GOAT knives revisited: What about the Rockstead HIGO w/ ironwood handles as an alternative to the Sebenza? I own one that I bought from Knife Center and I love it!
Hi DCA! I'm a new fan, loving the videos, you and Thomas always bring a smile to my face. My question is: What survival knives would you recommend for use in freezing weather? I've been thinking of giving the outdoors a try in late Fall/Winter, and I wanted have some knife recommendations that are under 4 inches, and under $200 with wooden handles that wouldn't freeze my hands. Thank you!
You’re one of my favorite knife people. Was hoping to meet you at blade show but health took me out. I am also a huge fixed blade fan. I know you liked the Cold Steel drop forged Bowie. Any other bad ass reasonably priced large fixed you recommended? Appreciate your opinions
My favorite source for that kind of question is the torture tests Joe X does. Just search for “Joe X fixed blade”. Cold Steel is one of his favorites, but there are a few others that do extremely well like Cold Steel.
We need to upgrade our knife sharpeners. We currently use pull through sharpeners for our kitchen knifes as well as pocket knives. Can you recommend a sharpener that would work for an 8” kitchen knife as well as a Baby Banter?
The 940 is a good option but for more grip, the griptillian would be cheaper and more comfortable/ durable based on blade shape. But my pick would be the spyderco shaman, or manix 2 with aftermarket add ons
Hi DCA, I will challenge you that the button lock is actually a lefty biased lock rather than "righty", operation with the index finger is actually better than with the thumb... Both since it is a more mobile finger (has one more falange) and... It's not alone on it's side like the thumb, there is plenty of other fingers that help the grip on the same scale when you move it around for operating the lock. Now the question: is there ANY right friendly button lock at all, on the market?
Herr Andersen, I am looking for a knife to keep in my "legal plant inhaling kit", of course a knife isn't the first thing you think to have when you're "sipping grass", but as we all know knives are endlessly useful. One thing I would prefer to have is a narrow blade with a down turned tip in case I need to do any poking.
I think you forgot about the Gemini as a classy heavy use folder. A touch small, but the S35vn carbon fiber is my go to for a dress folder and is plenty tough.
@knifecenter in your quick flicks, would it be possible to add a link in the description to the full video that the short clip comes from? That'd be awesome. I see many knifes in quick flicks that aren't discussed and have no way of figuring out what knife it is.
Hey DCA, I'm looking to add some more premium knives to my collection, but I don't know where to start. What are your recommendations for some best-in-class folding knives under $200? I would like each to shine in different areas (tactical, outdoor use, lightweight EDC, gentleman's carry, etc) while still being fairly versatile, and preferably be from different brands, although this is not a requirement. I don't really have any legal restrictions, but I would prefer a blade length between 3.2 and 4 inches, give or take. I am big on value, so if a knife is only marginally better but significantly more expensive, I would likely prefer the cheaper option. Made in China is a deal-breaker for me.
I'm right handed and have been practicing with my left, I have to say I find it far easier to work my button locks over my crossbar locks, but of course... your results may vary.
Love Knife Center channel and been a fan and subscriber for a long. I have a question that I hope you could answer. What is all the great options for a tomahawk, a chopper that could process wood and camp task with ease? Something light weight and has a wooden handle that is interchangeable or replaceable. I am a camper and usually finds a tomahawk is the best tool for camp task. What is your suggestion if price doesn’t matter? Would love a wide variety from beater tomahawk to high end, hand craft, or hand forged head.
Hi DCA. I have a SAK Farmer X with Alox. I have bought two sheathes that say they are for that knife, but one is way too tight, and the other ended up not having a belt loop. What is a good leather sheath for that? Also, is counting the layers of a SAK as intuitive as it seems. I'm pretty sure it's a 4 layer knife, but I've never heard anyone explain what the layers are as you look at the knife. Thanks! Mike.
Question for you guys, firstly as always thanks for your reviews, absolute tops! My question relates to the difference (price wise especially) between Liong Mah Field Duty 3.5 with brown burlap micarta handles etc. And the Boker Plus Jesper Voxnaes Little Friend Flipper 3.03 with brown burlap micarta handles. I’ve looked at the specs between the two, obviously the Field Duty is the bigger knife. Is it in the makers name or quality difference that makes a jump from one knife being $150 and the other $425?? Would be really great and appreciated to hear your opinion. Thanks, Keith… from Down Under in Australia 😊
What is the best blade only folding knife for opening bottles? Specifically, it should not be purpose built with an actual opener but levered open instead as can be done with a plastic lighter.
Question for knife FAQ: I’ve been into knives as my special interest for years and have LOVED engaging in both the hobby and using them as tools. However, I’ve been increasingly feeling despair at the viability of this hobby with the insane price hikes. DCA what do you think is yhe future of the knife community? Is it going to remain truly accessible to people who aren’t wealthy, or is the ship sinking? Are the prices gonna come down again ever? Thanks! Love your content ❤
Hey DCA and KC folks. I have a question for you: I’m a big fan of the Benchmade 51 Morpho and carried one at work for about 10 years (yes, I live in a state with no knife restrictions) but that specific knife has been retired as the blade has gotten smaller and smaller with subsequent sharpenings. I’d love to get a new one, but they are sadly discontinued. So, until the day that Benchmade brings it back in a new steel and handle configuration, do you know of any other balisongs with pocket clips & EDC use in mind? If so, thanks
Aloha Knife Center Crew, it's been a while since I've bought a knife that isn't from Walmart or Ace Hardware, and I'm having trouble figuring out all these new steels. Im looking for something to replace my 12 year old Essee 4 and found some knives that are stainless like 14C28N and 154CM. Looking for something for outdoor activities here in Hawaii for both at the beach and in the mountains. I like the Ruike Jager and the Hogue EX-F02, but don't know the main differences are between the 2 steels. I also found an Essee 4 in S35VN but again, I'm unsure of the steel. Would you be able to help me? Any insights will be much appreciated. Very happy I found your channel, I've been watching and enjoying your videos for a month now and theres always something new to learn. Mahalo for sharing these videos and for your time, aloha.
Hey DCA, is there any modifications that someone could make to an axis/crossbar lock knife to make it operate from the spine? I love the way that the Sandrin recoil lock works, but their range is a bit on the pricey side and had a limited range compared to the amount of crossbar lock knives. Any thoughts?
Yo DCA and crew. Got a question for you. I like the Civivi NOx. Like the frame lock, the steel handles, most of all, I love the hollow ground drop point blade on that knife. Buuuuuut...it's way too small for my hands. Can you recommend something with the DNA of the NOx, but the size of a PM2 or at least a PM3. Price is flexible up to about 150 (more if it's exactly what I'm looking for), but I know I'll use it more if it's cheap enough to be a 'beater'. Thanks for all you do!
So my favorite knife companies are Kershaw and Spyderco. I'm getting my coworkers into knives and I get lost in the weeds when I try to tell them where to start. What knives from Kershaw or Spyderco would you recommend for people who USE their knives and want to start collecting?
DCA, can You recommend a sheath or combination methodologies to conceal carry of a 4 inch or 5 inch fixed blade on you forearm or wrist? It should be secure, easily accessible and doesn’t imprint obviously.... I have a CCL, but would like to have an alternative to a pistol . I live in Chicago so this is NOT a facetious question...thank you
Hey D.C.A and Thomas, I love the series. I'm looking for a hurricane knife. I live in Florida and we get them sometimes. My friend recommended, a Combo edge Gerber Paraframe, thus works, but I prefer Tip up, and I might add a window breaker. Any suggestions? How about a fixed blade? Budget $100, so I'm not afraid to use it.
There is an argument to be made that right handed button locks are easier for lefties because it is on the side where they have multiple fingers kinda like the compression lock with righties
Hey DC! I still need to know. Can you show me 3 good options for pocket fixed blades around $100 because of course the sheath is as important as the knife! Thanks!
Mr. Andersen, I am a Firefighter and would lie to know what you could recommend in folding nife that would be a good rescue knife for cutting airbags, seat belts etc. I am looking for something under 75.00 ? Thanks, Gunny
Hi David, Yellow is not my color. Is it possible to dye the scales on the S18 Victoriox? What would happen, if I wiped some pink dye on those yellow scales? My wife likes pink.
I’m a “lefty”, but growing up in a righty world I’m quite ambidextrous. I naturally carry my knives “right handed” . I’ve no issue either way; though carrying a knife on my right side does free up my gun hand😎…
I am a new recruit in the army and have Ranger selection in a couple months since I signed with a ranger candidate contract. I’ve been looking for a fixed blade, preferably full tang, that I can use in the field and not worry about it breaking or going dull. The problem is I just turned 18 and don’t have a crazy amount of money at my disposal and a lot of fixed blades tend to be expensive. Any recommendations?
Question for Knife FAQ: currently I have very few fixed blades in my collection. I have some decent compact fixed blades like the CRKT folts minimalist, outdoor edge le duck and some other more hunting style fixed blades. I’m in the market for a fixed blade that is great for camping/hiking that can handle most tasks in the outdoors. Fix blades are not my area of expertise and I was wondering what you recommend would be a good mid range priced fix blade for me?!
I always have a snap off knife as an EDC. Guaranteed to have a razor-sharp edge for packages, box break down, and other tasks. I have a whole box of them that cost about $0.75 a piece so no worries about losing them. That said... I can't seem to stop buying knives. I need a 12-step program. 😂
There's several ways to deal with a coconut. If you're already intending to toast the meat, just bake the things. The shell becomes brittle and usually splits during the roast.

Best tool to open a coconut is a rock. Don't risk hurting your blade with a task that a rock can handle much better.
I used a big vise and crushed them open.
But grocery store staffs do open coconuts with a knife or a machete, for that provides a clean opening .Probably we shouldn’t open it by prying with a delicate tip, but others would handled it just fine, additionally rocks can be dirty.

Maybe you guys should go Google how to open a coconut with a rock before responding...
Are you high? You just tap the coconut over and over again with the back of the blade until the nut is separated from the husk.
My go to “church” or dressing up knife has been a special run Delica that my wife bought me for our 5th anniversary…it has Damascus steel and Pakkawood…by far one of the nicest gifts I could’ve ever received and I cherish that knife.

I use my BK-7 for coconuts. Hack off a chunk of the husk, and then use the protruding part of the tang to crack a hole in the core.
Thomas, always a great job in editing. It's mostly a thankless task, yet makes all the difference.
Hi Knife Center. If I’m using a fixed blade knife to open a coconut I’m using a DCA design Canteen knife. See you guys. Have a great weekend.
Another great inexpensive lefty friendly is the ka-bar space force tanto. It has double thumbstuds out of the box and a reversible clip. It has Aus8 and it stayed relatively clean in my extremely sweaty and corrosive pockets.
For leftys on a budget: SRM.
I got the 9202, crossbar lock, thumb hole, 3.5" D2, G10, reversible clip, 30$.

What are some good deals? The least expensive items, seem expensive. That S18 Victoriox is $69.00.

Snecx designed the Mini Buster for opening coconuts :-). I used mine from WE for opening a couple, and it worked fine. The 20CV held up nicely.
Thank you!
Hi David,
What tool is most like the Swiss Army Knife Super Tinker, with a locking blade?
You're very good to provide a nice long segment to lefty knives....I fast- forwarded through it, of course. 😅
@@vwr32jeep Like the Mora Robust, he couldn't destroy it, only managed to damage it badly, but it didn't break!
Hi David,
What knives are in your vehicles? Do you keep a knife on your boat at all times?
Hi DCA! Is it true that when gifting a knife We should include a coin along or else it's badluck? And so any other knife superstitions?
Also a lock is probably not important.
Fruit and melon sampler, Victorinox pruner or maybe a mushroom knife . . . might be the knife for the job.
I think you forgot about the Gemini as a classy heavy use folder. A touch small, but the S35vn carbon fiber is my go to for a dress folder and is plenty tough.
I'm kinda surprised you didn't mention the AD 20.5 for lefty friendly. Has the extra clip too just incase
Was probably the "budget" limitation.
@knifecenter in your quick flicks, would it be possible to add a link in the description to the full video that the short clip comes from? That'd be awesome. I see many knifes in quick flicks that aren't discussed and have no way of figuring out what knife it is.
What knife, hawk, machete or hatchet would you recommend for hack and squirt herbicide application in hardwood trees?
What are some good options for deep carry wire clip knives? I love the way wire clips look and need deep carry.
Spyderco Para 3 Lightweight.
As a lefty, I can attest that linerlocks get pressed to the open position pretty frequently. Especially with gloves.
I use that style handhold when chopping or hacking w my ad-10. I beat that thing mercilessly. They are one of the best I’ve used and abused.
THE BEST knife series on the internet! thank u gentlemen
Byrd is massivley underrated. They are awesome knives.
I love my Cogent. Super useful blade shape. Great button lock.
Lighting round question: zytel or GRN for a handle on a folder
Took me a second to go back through the videos but what about the CRKT Razel Nax for a 4" coconut Splitter?
You forgot Victorinox one-hand 111mm knives for lefthand use.
Thanks! Love your content ❤
knives are going up in price due to inflation. which is out of control. 40$ even just 5 years ago was worth a good bit more than it is now.
Hi DCA - Is there a fixed-blade gentleman's knife? Bonus if it had a slim sheath as well.
Hey DCA and KC folks. I have a question for you:
I’m a big fan of the Benchmade 51 Morpho and carried one at work for about 10 years (yes, I live in a state with no knife restrictions) but that specific knife has been retired as the blade has gotten smaller and smaller with subsequent sharpenings.
I'm looking for a good wharncliffe or a reverse tanto in the mid range price point. Would love some recommendations.
You should mention where these knives are made. It makes a difference for some of us.
I’m still shocked you guys haven’t brought up one of the cleanest, best looking folders made.
I live in Chicago so this is NOT a facetious question...thank you
Glad I grabbed the endela hap40 pakkawood it’s a great knife and great steel. Paid $159.99 off Knife Center 👍🏻
Thanks!
Hi, DCA big fan of the content, my question is what is the toughest budget steel? 4116, 420, aus8, sk5, D2 maybe?
420 or 14c28n
5160
Lol thank you. I wanted to see what pocketable knife I can use at any time to cut open coconuts lol
The Zero Tolerance Emerson also looks pretty good and is a harder use knife compared to many prettier knives.
@knifecenter - What is the best flipper knife under $100 that does not run on ball bearings?
Mr. Andersen, I am a Firefighter and would lie to know what you could recommend in folding nife that would be a good rescue knife for cutting airbags, seat belts etc. I am looking for something under 75.00 ? Thanks, Gunny
Hi David,
Yellow is not my color. Is it possible to dye the scales on the S18 Victoriox? What would happen, if I wiped some pink dye on those yellow scales?
My wife likes pink.
DCA is a champion of the left handed. Always looking out for us.
I’m a “lefty”, but growing up in a righty world I’m quite ambidextrous. I naturally carry my knives “right handed” . I’ve no issue either way; though carrying a knife on my right side does free up my gun hand😎…
Lefty that’s quite ambidextrous, but also right eye dominate, can shoot pistols either hand. But definitely most of my knife work is left handed.
Like how close exactly is 14c28n compared to 14c28n?????
Hey what do you all think of the Higonokami knives? Also can we get a crash course on white vs blue paper steels?
I have a question: what pocket knife would Finn from Adventure Time carry?
DCA, what about a video showcasing knife Center HQ?
Question for Knife FAQ: currently I have very few fixed blades in my collection. I have some decent compact fixed blades like the CRKT folts minimalist, outdoor edge le duck and some other more hunting style fixed blades. I’m in the market for a fixed blade that is great for camping/hiking that can handle most tasks in the outdoors. Fix blades are not my area of expertise and I was wondering what you recommend would be a good mid range priced fix blade for me?!
literally anything from mora, esee, or becker by kabar
I always have a snap off knife as an EDC. Guaranteed to have a razor-sharp edge for packages, box break down, and other tasks.
I have a whole box of them that cost about $0.75 a piece so no worries about losing them.
That said... I can't seem to stop buying knives. I need a 12-step program. 😂
Do a current round up of fixed blades available now.
