- With 2023 in our rearview mirror and 2024 looming large, it’s that time of year again where we look back at the year that’s been- and what a year it’s been. It’s hard to think of many years that have been as packed full of incredible new games as this one has been.
Over the course of the last twelve months, we’ve had the good fortune of enjoying a steady stream of veritable instant classics, games ranging across all genres, coming from developers big and small, and strengthening the libraries of all platforms on the market.
Here, our objective is to look back and pick out the ones that we feel stood out above all the others, so join us as we talk about our favorite games of 2023, including the one we felt was the brightest start among them all- our game of the year. - Ігри

Deserved IMO. People love to be hyperbolic with that game but they really tried some new shit (for better or worse) and I think if you can get into it, it's far more impressive than either of those games IMO

I played both Starfield, Baldur's Gate 3 and Cyberpunk (I have a PC, so no Tears of the Kingdom for me), and I had (and still have) about equally fun with them. Of course there are games not here on the list I had a blast with too. To name a few - The legend Of Heroes - Trails Into Reverie, Atelier Ryza 3, Atelier Marie and The Legend Of Nayuta and a few more. I can only say I had a good year in gaming, and Starfield was certainly a part of that...😁

I had more fun with Starfield than BG3. And it's maybe because I think the combat, classes, and upgrading systems in Divinity Original Sin 2, Larian's last game, are better than BG3. But I started BG3 on PS5 & Starfield on Series X both on the early release weekend. Played 12 hours of each, but then kept playing Starfield because I was having way more fun. And I played nothing but Starfield for 3 weeks. (I will admit by the time I finished Starfield I was ready for it to be over, maybe because I'd played so much of it, but I loved my time with it.) And after that, I still wasn't interested in going back to BG3, I played Phantom Liberty instead. I've since gone back to BG3, & I like it (in Chapter 2) but I had way more fun ship building, having spaceship fights, and doing the faction quest in Starfield.

Yeah, and it's the best game I've ever played so that cancels out. I don't think people realize this, but when you get into starfield, it's may be the greatest game ever made. It's not just me saying this there are plenty others.
unfortunately, not everyone seems to get into it or has the patients to get into it.
Yeah I loved all of bgs' modern games (morrowind/oblivion/fo3/skyrim/fo4), have played them all multiple times, most of them like 7-8 times. I enjoyed starfield overall but did not think it was anywhere close to their previous titles and would probably not play it again if i hadnt purchased the 100 dollar version that comes with the dlc lol. It's fine but having it 2nd ahead of games like bg3 and totk seems insane

In 2023 I played over 100 games. I completed 32 of those. And there were a huge number of amazing games I didn't even have time to get to. Thank you for sharing your opinions and the detailed explanations of why each entry on the list was worth putting there. These lists tend to draw a lot of heat, but I just appreciate hearing everyone's perspective. Thanks for sharing yours, and here's hoping for a great 2024!

That gameplay got old so fast. Walk around...discover something......kill 2-3 enemies...go to the case wall. I played for 2-3 hours and shelved it.

You're saying race swapped on a character that wasn't even named when a premise rough draft of the story was in an EASTER EGG in Quantum Break back in 2015. Notice there was no Mr. Door in that Easter egg too. There's a lot of things that weren't in that Easter egg. But they had a rough idea of where they wanted the story to go back then. They still had many more years to tweak it before it'd even get the green light to be made.

I think I must be lucky because other than one crash I didn't experience any issues on PS5 at launch. Sucks many others did though.

That was well laid out, I liked the amount of time you spent with each game. Everyone's going to (rightly) have their own GOTY, and for me, it was Baldur's Gate 3, to the point where I haven't really played anything else since it released. Maybe Allen Wake 2 is really better, but I'm in no hurry to find out. I figure another 500 to 1,000 hours happily spent in BG3 ought to let me get in on AW2 about the time there's a price drop.
I just got it for $26 on Epic game store.
Starfield should not have been on the list. BG3 should have been #1 and TOTK should have been #2. Followed by Alan Wake 2, then Spiderman 2
BG3 is actually better than AW2.. I have it and have fnished it yet...That saids a lot taking my time as I don't have that need to rush it..BG3 ia a game that I keep coming back to and will be playing it for years. Once I fnish AW2 I know that will be it and won't be coming back to it.

Starfield at number 2?????????? I quit playing playing the game, it´s so dull compared with other games in the list. Baldur´s gate 3 is by far the best game. Alan Wake is by far the second best. Loved Lies of P and Armored Core and I´m curious about Wi-fi rush. I must get back to Starfield at number 2 🤔, Bethesda is giving some hard cash to the reviewer 🤣

It's nice to see Starfield get some legitimate and objective love so soon. Usually, it takes the video game media a few years to circle back, once the internet hate machine's eye has moved its focus to newer cultural disappointments. It's not the game that would change your life but it's a great game that did come out this year.

Well there's a difference between hate and not agreeing, I for example totally disagree with Starfield being higher than Baldur's gate. For me this makes no sense. I am not saying Starfield is a bad game I think the game is fine, but something so special and complex like Baldur's gate placing lower just doesn't make a lot of sense to me. @@whenisdinner2137

It was a meh year..... COMPARED to other years. Every year is a great year for gaming...by itself. But when comparing years (which no one has to do, btw), 2023 wasn't that great.

Every game now just needs to be super hard and compared to freaking dark souls. No thanks I'll be glad when that trend dies. Souls likes are ruining gaming. Every game is becoming a party roll simulator now. It's super tiresome and annoying. I played Elden Ring and I've played enough of this genre and I'm kind of sick of it being copied by everyone.

My top game experience of 2023 has been the Forbidden West DLC “Burning Shores.” Just incredible. I will keep going back. The Horizon series started out strong, and just keeps getting better. I’m also loving Starfield. (Hey, I’m allowed to like what I like. It’s fun.) Got Baldur’s Gate 3 cued up next. So many great games out for every player and every taste.

This list has Starfield and Diablo 4. They cited Starfield as "one of the best games we've played this year". GamingBolt has lost all credibility. I've been subbed for years but this is where I draw the line. Everyone with more than a single brain cell knows this is a paid advertisement.
I could see starfield in some lists near the bottom it is top 30 so you will end up with some good/mediocre games on the list and depending on taste it could get there, but above balders gate and near the top calling BS.

They were either paid for this video or they care more about appealing to starfield fans by mentioning starfield than actually having real integrity. This game is a masterpiece and shows what the gaming industry is capable of so we put it at 4. This game is divisive and we admit it has problems, we'll put it at 2.
So many good games this year. There's no way you could make this list without disappointing someone. I'm just happy 2023 was good for gaming.

@@TevyaSmolka I'm really looking forward to the new Stalker game, Black Myth Wukong, & Pragmata which intrigues me because it was meant to be 2023 but all we have to go on is a short cgi trailer & some pictures which just show an astronaut, a little girl & a holographic cat & it's meant to be truly next gen visuals.
Also The Division Heartland should definitely be out next year some time.
So many games have either gone radio silent such as Stellar Blade, Arc Raiders etc or just delayed until some time in 2024.
My most anticipated game was TLOU Factions so I'm literally feeling gutted but atleast we will still get TLOU part 3.

No 25 hour platinum should be top 5 let alone top 3. Dont get me wrong it was a great play, but spiderman 2 was the quickest blink of a game i completed this year
Having lies of P on the top 30 and not mentioning Remnant 2 is such a crime. If you are a fan of souls like I highly recommend everyone give Remnant 2 a shot. I was hesitant to get it after not liking remnant 1 but the second game has improved a lot over the first game and is probably my favorite souls like game.
To put Startfield in a higher position than Zelda and Baldur's gate is an insult. Starfield is boring as hell.
Starfield is Fallout 3 with 4K texture pack change my mind.

Lies of P was my number 1. It was the start of something great I think. You’d be lying if you thought it would turn out as good as it did.
So true. I was initially hyped after when it first was revealed. Then I saw a few short gameplay demonstrations over the last summer and started to have serious doubts. I played the demo and had my concerns demolished, but even still I didn’t think it would be as good as it was. Glad it turned out awesome.
Don't worry. My personal GOTY, System Shock Remake, didn't make the cut either and that game was tied with Lies of P for me as my GOTY. Both incredibly phenomenal games!

People are allowed opinions but some objectivity to understand the difference between a personally enjoyable game and technical brilliance would be good, I mean I loved Cyberpunk from 1.0 but it didn't take a genius to work out it was not the best game of the year.

Games like Alan Wake and the soul's likes only proves that some people have way too much time on their hands considering the time consuming difficulty and backtracking in most of these games. But don't mind me I'm still upset at the hands of my Sekiro defeat 😢
I feel like you forgot remnant 2, my 3 favorite ganes of this year 1. Baulders gate 3, 2. Robocop rogue city, 3. Remnant 2. Easily the best games at least from a fun aspect i feel like i got my money's worth plus . But you guys have been bought.

Well, I posted a comment that I had to erase. After evaluating the list, I have to agree. It is a different selection from what we have seen, as well as IGNs list, but we all have to agree this years has been packed with outstanding games, games we love and some that we hate. But still, good games overall. Congrats to Alan Wake 2, it deserves a lot more praise than what has gotten. Also, I'm surprised Star Field was runner up. Loved the game and never expected to be runner up due to the hate it got, which I can't judge because, well, stuff happens.

It was a solid 7 in a year full of 9s and 10s. It’s just the way it is, can’t give the game anymore than a nod for a good first effort.
Maybe if they put more effort in console optimization. Look at Lies of P, they managed to pull off stunning visuals while being well optimized, and all that from a small sudio
I have seen some pretty bad top whatever lists in my time, but this one takes the cake purely based on Starfield not only being in the top 20 but at the #2 spot no less. It doesn't get more ridiculous than that.

Usually, it takes the video game media a few years to circle back, once the internet hate machine's eye has moved its focus to newer cultural disappointments. It's not the game that would change your life but it's a pretty cool game.

great list, Diablo 4 making it was a bit of headscratcher to me thou. Maybe it's just not my jam, but it felt very underwhelming vs previous iterations or upcoming competitors like POE 2

Ya know, I actually got Chorus about a year ago. I played it for a bit and really liked it. I like air/space combat games in general. But I ended up putting Chorus back into my Library because I needed the space for another game I wanted to play more at the time (but I can't remember what that game was). I kinda just forgot all about Chorus though, so thanks for reminding me. I think I'll go back to that one because I'm kinda "in between games" right now. Just finished The Callisto Protocol last night (which I didn't think was as bad as so many people made it out to be). Was thinking of doing some kinda quick and simple platformer as a change of pace, but then might go back to Chorus after that.
I also thought Everspace 2 looked cool. Like I said before, I just dig that particular style of game.

Yeah... many question marks tbh. How can a game be on 2 places? Putting lords right before Diablo 4 and pointing out it's bosses when the bosses were one of it's main weaknesses. And then putting Starfield AND Spiderman 2 above BG3 is straight up rediculous
As far as your 1st question: How can a game be on 2 places? (Like Jusant being at 24 AND 23) I was wondering the same thing. I'm thinking it might be because at the beginning of the video it said the rankings were determined by the "entire team" at GamingBolt. So I'm thinking they probably used some kind of points system, and those games that were at 2 spots got the same number of points. As far as the other questions: I'm thinking it's all just a matter of opinion.
Although, if the rankings are based on some kind of points system from an entire "team" of people, then just judging from the comments here, it seems that it's kind of crazy (or suspicious) that Starfield ranked so high. I still think the game looks cool, but I haven't played it yet. But it seems like the general consensus according to everything I've seen, heard, and read (including the comments here) it doesn't seem like a whole "team" of people would agree that Starfield should be ranked so high. In the end though, it doesn't really matter what "other people" think. All the really matters is what each individual person thinks for themselves. For example I actually really liked The Callisto Protocol, even though most "other people" hated it.

I was surprised to see Starfield so high after seeing so many claims that it isn't any good. I haven't finished, so this is good to know. Also haven't finished AW2 either but felt like Remedy was onto something with its design. Definitely is original and unique for a horror genre thats deep with offerings.

Personally saw top 3 being Spider-Man 2, baldurs gate 3 & Alan wake 2. To have such a divisive game as starfield in at 3 makes no sense to me.
