When i listen to Benny's piano album the most moving songs are the ones I didn't know from ABBA or Chess.... so it was clear that he is a composer on a journey... my Mum has been diagnosed with dementia 10 years ago. As it became worse and she felt frightened a lot, we discovered that the Piano album is calming her down, gives her comfort and joy. Every since, roughly 4 years ago, that record plays a central part in her life. Sometimes when she had a bad day or ended up in hospital, i played her the record and she would start to cry. So moved emotionally by that music of Benny. Especially Chess touches her deeply and her eyes become teary. But she forgets all evil and pain all angst not knowing exactly what happens to her... if ever she will pass, she's 87 now, we children agreed that songs of that album will be played at her funeral. This man, this record, his oevre was our biggest help over the last years to comfort our mum in times of trouble. Sometimes when she listens to the music, she waves to Benny imagining him sitting at the piano and throws him kissed and thanks him for the beautiful music. Thank you for the music
I love Benny, watching him rock and play the piano, then headbang. After all that he would smile the sweetest smile in the world. Now he comes on stage with his gorgeous son. Wow! What a treat! Benny Andersson has mined the raw ores of crude sound with his ingenious ability to form music into accomplished master pieces. Chess is composed of Neo Romantic movements, laced with chorals and modern arias. Andersson showed no inhibition in choosing voicings of instrumwnts; Benny utilized instruments of new 20th century state-of-art technologies. These instrumentation probed the slumbering decay of Romanic period forms, re-vitalizing the sonada with deepened involvements of modern 2oth century tones and textures. The lingering of 18th century instruments echos vigorously among the many compositions scored by Andersson over the years of Benny's practice of music; And, Benny Andersson continues to orchestrate - some composition being produced before: THE INK HAS DRIED [colliquial].
Actually, that combining of modern instruments (Synths, samples etc) with the classical elements is also reminding me a lot of what Vangelis has done with his music. With the big iconic warm String pads and Brass sounds that come from a similar Iconic Synth, the Yamaha CS-80 which shares a lot of it's architecture and sound with the Yamaha GX1 that Benny had. Chariots of Fire, Bladerunner intro etc. I feel both of them also write very "thematic" music that works very well for films or musicals... They even look similar with the beard-style and all!

I'm not sure that I would describe London or the United Kingdom as a "tax haven" even today. Yes, tax rates for the richest are lower than in Scandinavia (between 40% and 50%) but I would have thought Monaco (referenced in "Money, Money, Money" of course) etc. would be better. In the 1970s we had Scandinavian levels of taxation with the top rate at 83% with a 15% surcharge for income from share investments making a top rate of effectively 98% for some income. OUCH!!! That was done away with of course as did the Norwegians with their effective top rate of 105% (!!!) which obviously is a bad idea. Regarding Benny's comment about an Englishman not appreciating forests I can tell you that this Englishman certainly does and would love the idea of living in Scandinavia certainly for a while to see if it were to work out. People in the Nordic countries seem to be better educated and have a much better attitude towards their surroundings and environment and in Britain we have a large class of people who have a bad attitude towards such things with hooligan behaviour, leaving litter everywhere and a general disregard for things which they are unconcerned with but should be.
