  • This video provides information on a clicking noise I had coming from the RHS top of the engine (Cam enclosure area). The problem was resolved by
using a can of hydraulic valve lifter fluid. (to my surprise :)
Hope this will be useful for other people, not necessarily XJR owners.
I am not a professional bike mechanic and not suggesting you do this, merely letting you know what I did and it worked.

sounds pretty normal. My makes just the same noises as your. Air cooled engine rattles way louder than liquid cooled.

    Hi,
Normally Silkolene 10W/40 ( semi-synthetic ) as used since almost new. The can is 350cc which treats upto 6L. I used 220cc.

Hi, Wynn's Hydraulic Valve Lifter Treatment. It's a small CAN, just did a search on EBay and it's £10.

Hi , just curious as to what grade & brand of oil do you use? Also how much of the Wynn's do you add to the oil?
For sure your XJR engine is quieter after the treatment ,my engine is quiet when warming up but sounds quite noisy when hot.....

Hi, did you put the Wynns product in and leave the bike running on tick over, or did you take it for a ride, is it necessary to change the oil immediately after adding the Wynns or can you leave it in?, cheers Mark

Hi, two very valid questions. I left in running in the garage only. Afterwards I changed the oil.

@@CLLUK Thanks CLLUK, I remember years ago using it on my Calibra 16v, yes it was that long ago!, and it worked brilliantly, 3 minutes on tick over and the ticking tappet fell silent, in that case I did as you say above and then changed the oil, my XJR has just developed a tick, it seems to have come on suddenly so I doubt it’s in need of adjustment more likely a sticking lifter, so Wynns is on order, thanks for your video 👍

Excellent! I agree, I went through the same thought process. I'm not a car person so googled the Cailbra 16v. Nice.

@@CLLUK ha, it had the same effect as a space ship suddenly appearing when I got it in the early 90’s, crowds gathered around it!, 10 years later nobody gave them a glance , they are probably getting collectible now though, along with all the other old rubbish 😄

Just a footnote to this, my XJR started rattling as in the video, I got a can of Wynns, got the bike out, fired it up to warm the oil, no rattle!, so whatever was causing the lifter to stick cleared itself, therefore it may be worth waiting a couple of rides before using the Wynns, I’ve been on a couple of rides since and the rattle hasn’t returned 👍
