The song was an international hit: top 5 in australia top 2 in austria top 3 in belgium top 1 in europe hot 100 top 1 in finland top 2 in greece top 1 in ireland top 2 in italy top 4 in holland top 4 in new zealand top 4 in norway top 6 in south africa top 5 in sweden top 3 in switzerland top 2 in uk top 7 in germany It also reached the top 10 in Zimbabwe, and many other countries.
I think from November 1978 on, when RTE 2 began broadcasting Top of the Pops live from the BBC, there was probably more of an influence on the British charts. Many people could get Top of the Pops from BBC 1 if they were lucky to have cable television or overspill signals from Northern Ireland or Wales before 1978, but for the majority of Ireland, unless they could receive Radio Luxembourg or they had local pirate radio stations playing British chart music, it was more Irish based music in the Irish charts, especially in the west of Ireland. That’s not to say there wasn’t British chart music in the Irish charts but probably not as prevalent.
Yes, Top of the Pops had a huge influence. From what I remember, daytime radio in the Eighties was a mix of Country & Irish and big name British music. If you wanted to hear new Irish bands, Dave Fanning was sometimes the only option.
There was a notable rural urban split in Ireland until digital satellite came along. The East coast got UK TV with standard roof aerials before RTE even existed. Those who lived in 2-channel land always moaned no end about it!
Belfast Child that one does it for me, so glad that was number one in Ireland 🇮🇪 It deserved to be. Anyone with Irish heritage will surely appreciate that.
Such a variety at number one, when Joe Dolcie popped up I was thinking he even held Vienna off the top spot in Ireland but fortunately Ultravox got their number 1 unlike in the UK.
Ultravox was very unlucky. They had about 10 hits within the top 20 close to the top 10 that didn't reach that. And with 8 top 10 albums none were number 1. But Midge Ure had number 1 with her band Slik in 1976 and as a solo artist in 1985. Vienna was also number 1 in Holland and "Fade To Grey" with visage was number 1 in France, Germany and Switzerland.
Good job as always, Francis! As to the chart itself - more than predictable I'd say with just a hint of suprises: 5:01, 5:55 and 10:55 + 22:30 ( two of the best U2 songs ever IMHO). George Michael won male category by miles, fortunately Shakin' couldn't have kept up with him........
Interesting to compare with the UK charts At times the No 1s were similar, but uU2 not surprisingly far more successful in Ireland,, Biggest surprise was seeing Waterboys 'Bang on the Ear' in there
I might’ve used a clip of the Eurovision performance for What’s Another Year, seeing as it won FOR Ireland. EDIT: Also Hold Me Now. I’d also argue it’s because the live versions of those songs were what made them REALLY legendary, versus the studio recordings which (let’s be honest) kinda just sound like ‘80s cheese.
I miss these generations there was a lot more respect and less attention to social meadia kids can actually go out and be themselves internet runined that
I feel like you should do more general decade-spanning videos like this again at some point. I realize they're a lot of work, but I'd rather wait for a longer video.
@@Agnethatheredhairkid I'm Turkish, it's very interesting that none of his songs came first in Ireland, even though Modern Talking was rocking the charts in Turkey.
@@erdinctopkara8401 Not surprising. oh my god. please do the 70s and 90s as well. Thank you thank you.
Or, at least, 1979 and 1978. Those are my favorite years of the 70's. LOL
Nice to see "Absolute Beginners" topping the charts for 2 weeks.

Man, Shakin' Stevens had quite the run at the beginning of the decade!
And three different Beatles topping the charts too!
Very much enjoyed this video, in time be great to have all chart entries from 1980-89!
Francis you are the man 🤘

Interesting to see that throughout an entire decade there were hardly any songs to peak on top for more than 4 weeks. :o
Be proud Ireland, these are probably the best 80s charts I've seen. Literally everything is included, all styles, not just English sounds. Amazing.
Thank you.
Thanks for letting us know which songs went to number one in Ireland during the 1980s, very interesting video! 😃
Man, Jason Donovan must have been HUGE over there, if he had that many number 1 hits!
He was. Remember this as a kid. As was Kylie Minogue of course!

My friend, greetings!!! where is the access to spotify. Have a nice week. Sergio SP Brazil
Thanks For Sharing!
Absolutely love that Kylie minogue “never too late” near the end
I hope you do another one for Irish #1 hits in the 70s!
Oh, an unusual country! I like that.
Is there one of No. 1 songs 80s in South Africa?

Can you do 80’s number one songs of Australia?
16:13 18:08 and 20:34 Omg I'm so happy they went #1.
Madonna's Borderline went to #1. Awesome.
I find it surprising Springsteen hit #1 in Ireland but not here in the US

It is unfair that the best esc-entry ever Take Him Home never went to no 1 in Ireland

10:08 I had no idea this went #1 anywhere in the 80s. :O
'The Living Years' should have been #1 in Britain.
HELL yes! Hope you do Israel at some point, I have chart data
Wicked!
Great start to 1981 with 3 tracks by John Lennon at #1. Sadly these were all posthumously.

@ Fabb412: It means 'Totally Yours' and is about Pope John Paul II.
