- In this episode of Sessions, we speak with revered tattoo legend Freddy Negrete about how the Chicano tattoo style was developed in the California prison system while he works on a gorgeous Memento Mori portrait of a woman and skull.
Currently working out of Shamrock Tattoo on the famed Sunset Strip of West Hollywood, Freddy Negrete is a tattoo legend deeply revered for his pioneering efforts behind Chicano tattooing. From gang life and prison to tattoo royalty, he's a frequent VIP guest at tattoo conventions around the globe, has appeared as a judge on the hit TV show Inkmaster, and has even worked as a tattoo advisor on the set of films like Batman Forever, Con Air, and Blade. His dedication to perfecting, preserving, and developing the cultural, as well as artistic, aspects of Chicano tattooing, makes him an integral part of tattoo history. Freddy also described how the Chicano tattoo style was developed in the Los Angeles prison system and includes many important cultural iconographies particularly important to those who forged the aesthetic.
In this Session filmed at Travis Barker's Musink Fest, many aspects of Chicano culture were celebrated including low rider cars and masters of the tattooing craft like Freddy Negrete. While creating this incredible black and grey portrait, Freddy talks about his own experience with loss and how Memento Mori pieces can be very powerful. He also touched on the passing of his son, Boo Boo Negrete, and how Musink Fest presented Freddy with an award for his work within the tattoo industry that included an image of his son, as well as the sweet cursive text, "I love you, dad".
