This sounds amazing ! And I mean you make it all sound amazing. I've rarely heard so much quality in productions with samples. Bravo !

Totally buying Ostinato Strings. This is one of those libraries that feels cheaty but can be used just as an inspiration, or a tool to take something you've done and make it sound more realistic. I tend to be a purist, but I try not to be too closed to using stuff like this.

You won't regret it. Very cost effective little tool, and suspect they'll build the series out even further down the road.

Outstanding video. I love Sonokenetic and can't wait to try this. Your awesome cues and videos are not awesome on my wallet -- within a day of hearing this, I've purchased Una Chorda and Bohemian Violin. Well worth it. Thanks!!

Aw thanks dude! I love comments like these that keep me going. I hope you saved some cash on Corda, it was just half off. VirHarmonic unfortunately didn't have a sale, but maybe next year. Thanks again!!

breathing is important in playing a string instrument, bt you would never guess that from some libraries. Fascinating video, please do more using Sonokinetic libaries, interesting philosophy of composing behind this.

One more point; I just realized that with the price of three of these libraries yo could buy the full version of Cubase; so really these libraries are kind of like on the DAW level; with respect to Sonokinetic, this is not emphasized in their promo vids. So could I come up with a film score using only these libraries? An original one now, not some cliched bit of writing.

What are the downsides to ostinato strings? No one ever criticizes anything anymore. All these videos today are "X sent me their software so I won't say anything negative about it".

    • @ManchesterMusic
      @ManchesterMusic 7 років тому

+IsItModern I'm not reviewing this product. I'm showing you how I used it in a cue, and its functionality. I'm sure there'll be oodles of reviews of Ostinato Strings soon.

But you're not from Sonokinetic, so you basically ARE doing a review by playing with the tool and showing how you used it. -And you know full well that anyone searching for information on Ostinato Strings will arrive at your video. You're a trusted channel, and therefore people will invariably treat this video as a review of the product, and probably buy it based on it. Why else would Sonokinetic send you the product in the first place if this isn't a review to some degree? Because they know you're a trusted channel, you won't say anything bad about the product and you'll play with the product and use it in a song that is good enough to sell the product. This isn't just a video to show cues, it's a biased ad in disguise. If you believe I'm wrong, tell us something you didn't like about Ostinato Strings. Give us its faults or what didn't work when you were building cues. I'm not trying to attack you, I'm just saying that you can't sit there and say this video with giant letters spelling "OSTINATO STRINGS" on the clickbait thumbnail isn't any kind of review.

    • @ManchesterMusic

There are people who do nothing but review sample libraries on UA-cam. Loads of them. I'm not going to mention their names here because I think they do a really bad job and don't deserve credit. Many of them enjoy spamming my channel in the comments. What joy. I have my own channel because I get to make the kind of videos I want, whether it's mic'ing a drum kit or getting drunk and answering audio questions. Were I to start reviewing everything under the sun I'd have no time to compose or find other audio work. Or eat cheese. Or get drunk and answer audio questions.
Having spent ages in Native Instruments static world of Action Strings where you can't choose the chord structure of your phrases (you can't even try to change the key without pitching down or something insane), you can't construct your own rhythms, can't choose your own voicing, etc..Ostinato is a breath of fresh air. but because a stranger from the internet thinks I'm doing a review, I'm supposed to dig deep into this new toy and criticize it? Until you've spent loads of time with other phrase libraries I don't think you can begin to appreciate Ostinato.
However: If you think criticizing the product will help, I guess I'm here to please. Hmm, I think the colour scheme is inelegant (green, brown and orange just don't mix IMHO) and I don't really care for the angular power circles either. The GUI looks a little 2008. Fun fact: I mentioned this to the team and they were like "k thanks".
If you've watched any of the other 'let's play' or 'let's plug' videos I did you'll see a consistent tone: I'm excited about new toys and I seldom have anything nasty to say about those products. If I didn't like the products or had a lot of negative stuff to say, I wouldn't spend half the day making a clip about it or using it in a cue.

Thank you, that was a very thoughtful reply. As I said before, I'm not trying to attack you or your credibility, it's just that a video addressing a product is either a review or an ad. There's no in-between. Demos and tutorials will fall into one of these categories as well. -and criticism isn't being nasty. If a product doesn't do something well and you say so, that is criticizing the product, aka, criticism, which is not synonymous with malice. And if someone like me finds one of your videos through a product name, it's likely we're not going to know your history or previous videos. What we see is some kind of guerrilla marketing tactic at work because there's no criticism. Only an instance of showing off a product and using it in a way that appears enticing to the point it sells the product. That was my only gripe, but again, thank you for your response. It was both courteous and professional.

It's all good dude. Sorry if I was harsh. I probably was. I just think we have fundamental disagreements on just what the responsibilities of a UA-camr is. Serious people can disagree.
At the end of the day I guess I forget that a lot of people use UA-cam to help them decide whether to pull the trigger on a very expensive piece of software, and videos like mine have a big bearing on that decision. Perhaps It's just not in my nature to be the kind of personality/channel you were expecting or that UA-cam users have come to expect, and that's cool, 'cause there's a million other voices on here.
My channel is more focussed on education and having a laugh. I started it because I wanted people to see what was happening BEHIND the cues and I wanted to show people what the library sounds like in the context of the creation of a song. I've only been here a year and it's going well given how niche I am.
You didn't ask, and perhaps don't care, but the bulk of 'reviewers' on UA-cam get the products free, and then proceed to play a couple of keys from every module, and in 5 minutes it's over. To me that's lazy, and a total disservice to the product and the team that worked on it.
Here you have company "x" that's put hundreds of man-hours into a library only to have some puke introduce themselves, say just how "excited they are" to play with 'x' library, and then re-explain everything in the manual for 8 minutes and call it a day? It'd be like reviewing a video game that took a team of 100+ people 2 years to make by saying "when you press the B button, the character jumps, X makes the character roll..Ok? Awesome, thanks for watching and subscribe".
I go a different route and actually use the library to make a friggin song. That's what it's for. You can hear it in action. And if it doesn't impress you, then there's your own review. You can make up your mind that way.

Interesting...! Seems a bit like "Action Strings on steroids" (well, trading in the - by now over-used - more complex phrases for a more powerful chord/voicing system)... would you agree?
And nice channel, BTW - subscribed. :-) (gotta thank Sonokinetic for sending me here)

Yeah, it's funny but I've heard others relate it to Action Strikes aesthetically. I think the choice to go for a 'rich, powerful' sound was maybe to appeal to the most people given that this is a new product?

Hi Geoff, great video and demo (it's not a demo, it's a que) of Sonokinetic Testosterone and the pianos, violins and woods (in the reeds haha) and other Spitfire gems.
Actually I find you communicate very clearly that even helps my dumb brain get it!
Quote of the week: "Also let's not do too much Cold Play today... ok!".
Any chance of the midi file from this video for me to muck around with, to help me get a grasp of Ostinato's non-staticness?
    Cheers,

+wayne gardner hey Wayne! Thanks for the kind words. Happy some people are sticking around for the jokes!
I'm afraid I can't release the midi, because that cue is going to end up in copyrighted media and even though it's just raw data for fair/educational use I wouldn't want any headaches down the road. Sorry!

My dear MM I do applaud your effort running this new library, I am a big fan of SonoKinetic,, I have been fascinated with VIVACE and even though it was the second SonoKinetic library, I still think is very usable. Anyways, my comment is as follows, I would like to have your opinion. Despite how nice OSTINATO may sound, I guess the guys from L.A.S.S. have way better engine to built these patterns in really complex and diverse ways. This OSTINATO only offers 5 patterns and as much as you try to combine them to get different ones, the results are not that convincing.! So..What's you take on that...???? Of course price difference may be a huge issue here...!
