I get the impression that for these interviewees the default foreigner is a Westerner, and the default Westerner is an American. I'd be interested to see a video exploring how aware Japanese are that 19 out of 20 foreigners are not American...

That's true the bulk of the foreign tourists are Chinese, Korean or Taiwanese. Westerners in Japan are so low in comparison that includes tourists, students and workers, but American's are highest in those low numbers.

You are right, they assume so, because Japan, with 53000 American soldiers on its soil, and more than twelve airbases, and maritime bases, is still a real American colony, under occupation.

These answers are pretty romanticized I think. The west could use a dose of Japanese professionalism, conformity, and politeness, even if it isn't genuine. For example, what's the point of openness when people say incredibly ignorant things constantly, and are almost never corrected...

I agree about the 'openness' of foreigners in the way that my impression of Japanese people when I was in Japan is that they are very polite at face value, but that was it, it's not that it felt forced, but lacked some heart. BUT at the same time, with openness comes rudeness, and that is what I do not like about many westerners. I definitely missed home after a month. In New Zealand, we are always told we are very friendly and I missed being able to talk to anyone about anything. I felt constantly aware that I may offend some one in Japan by coming across too frank and emotive. Japanese people have a great poker face!

    • @Roan.bot.
      @Roan.bot. 5 років тому +4

xJennova rudeness doesn’t come with openness. Honesty comes with openness. It takes tact but true openness requires vulnerability with others a few places in the world are actually good at that. Asian countries least of all.

My country(Philippines) used to be very uptight too like Japan(no offense).
U cant just talk to strangers to start random conversations or compliment their outfit etc. or having personal display of affection in public.
U cant be loud and very expressive.
U cant wear clothes that doesnt cover the shoulders, cleavage and waist and legs or else people will see u as vulgar and obscene.
Women once married, are just for the house.
Now my country is becoming more liberated and more westernized, people are expressing themselves and becoming more open, which i like.

I am part of a Japanese moms group and we were just talking about dating in Japan and romance and kissing. The ladies who are married to Americans talked about loving intimate time and the ladies who are married to japanese guys blushed and giggled and said they hardly ever kiss their husbands or have time together. Their husbands, even here in America, don’t come home until 11-2. They feel isolated and alone, especially once their kids are back in school. The husbands who have permanent jobs here are totally different. They are more relaxed and come home when Work is done and spend a lot of time with their families. I feel really bad for the ladies who are here temporarily. Talking about husbands is a sad subject and not a happy one.

We are even trying to have beautiful skin like them and dress like them too! (I am also speaking for myself). The openness when it comes to conversation and expressing feelings in public though...I had no idea that they were so limited to displaying that sort of thing! And I never knew that they envied the way we dress here! Showing more skin and all. I honestly thought that was something they wouldn't like about us. out of all the 3 times I was in the US so far (fiance is an US citizen) I have to say that I had the best experience with the amount of help I was getting from the people, they would even let me use their own smartphones just to call my fiance because I didn't have data, no money and no money on my phone either to make a phone call. I'm from Germany and I never experienced anything like that in my entire life here.
But yes I can only speak for German people don't like for help here because we feel like we would bother someone or we don't want someone to know about our problems. We feel embarrassed to ask for help. only if they are very close friend or family members but even then we kinda feel bad for asking for help because we kinda get raised with the mentality that we have to be able to deal with our problems alone at a certain age for example in Germany a parent would say "you are already 18 why are you still living at your parents house? and you are already 20 the clock is ticking, you still didn't bring me grand children" and in the US I noticed that it's totally fine to life at your parents place when you are in your 20's and I catch my fiances mom saying "you are only 25 you don't know much about life yet or one day you will have children but not right now" XD.
Me personally if someone offers me help or tried to give me a nice advice when I don't really want it, I get annoyed over that very quick because in my brain I am thinking "do they think that I'm stupid" or "do they think that I didn't know that"? XDD so that's why I only ask for help if I really need it.

that was very interesting. i hear what all these comments and it all has good and bad. in the u s we say whatever we want. which is good everyone knows where they stand. on the other hand there is a lot of hurt feeling, fights start hell you could even get shot. so there could be problems with it. The Japanese don't say it right out to keep the piece but that would seem to cause a lot of internal stress. may be thats why they don't smile at everyone and keep to there self out in public. It's just different cultures it's what your used to. That's why the old saying when in Rome do as the Romans. Be careful what you wish for you just might get it. Great stuff Cathy and Director

Though I think a lot of people in America don't find our lack of job security and benefits and stuff like rootlessness cause of the working world to be something to be 'envied.' Gone, for the most part, are the days when you could expect to work in your field all your life and retire with a pension, but those are often missed. :)

This one was a bit of a head scratchier. It's not clear to me that in the US we're more open. A lot of what passes for conversation is more like trivial social filler. Nice weather we're having. Yes, it is isn't it. It's also not clear to me that there is more nature. I think Japan is renowned for its beautiful landscapes. It's also not clear to me that we treat our womenfolk all that well. But maybe the grass is always greener. In any case, it's common to read articles about women who have a job and do the housework too. However, I do think that real conversation with people you see frequently does occur, but that takes time and also a little bit of effort.
But the big cup thing is true. I think. I can't recall what we're calling them now. It's like olive sizes but with more sales-talk. Stupendous, Enormous, Too big to finish. And if you don't know the code in the place you're just trying to buy a cup o joe from and you have the temerity to ask for, dare I say it, small, medium or large, they look at you like you're some sort of two headed monster from another galaxy. Next time it happens I'm getting right back into my space ship and leaving.

I think he means in a broad spectrum Japanese have more reserved conversations. While as Americans or other foreign countries don't have a filter.

Id say its A LOT more open than in japan, big thing is language barrier but even if you could speak japanese fluently. In america some people are a lot more talkative, sometimes you kinda do want them to shut up lol. At work I deal with a lot of people in insurance, some people are talkative and others are normal and a few people are a complete pain in the ass.

As someone who has traveled the US quite a bit there is SO MUCH nature and wooded areas, you'll defiantly see them when you go on road trips. Conversation where I'm from aren't social filler either in fact each state we've been to we've had people of all kinds come up to us and spark up wild conversations that always end with us know a bit too much about them, people will come up to my mother and basically give their whole life story and she doesn't know them AT ALL. I agree and disagree with the whole we treat women better because i mean if you look at the facts women in japan aren't treated as well as women in the states but they have some things our women in the US don't have that would benefit our women here too.

Why didn''t you explore the comments about culture and buildings more. That was an opportunity to find out more interesting stuff than anything you find out before.I thought that Japanese you look after the heritage, especially in Kyoto, but that woman was suggesting they don't.Also, she said Japanese are not as interested, in the heritag, as foreigners are, which I'd like to know more, because I find their history. 1 of the most interesting and exotic, in human history

I feel so sad watching these videos. I feel exactly the same about them as they are saying about us. (Except for changing jobs). Japan is 80% forested and mountainous. I do think the tourists often know more about those “out of the way locations” than the Japanese do which is sad. But it’s no different to back in my country. Also, Tokyo itself is 20% green parks. And I love seeing how the Japanese people use them. Back home always empty.

I would have to disagree with all of these :D Plenty of people are not so open. In Poland, we drop children to grandparents or other family members. And when these kids are about 5-6, well... parents are often going out. I am saying this from my own experience. There are babysitters but it's better to ask a family member of course. Showing more skin - subjective opinion - for me is obscene, but remember, it's my opinion. And also there are a lot of people that will work in the same place for 40+ years and they won't change that. So... it seems that Japanese have seen too many movies. :) Various people - various personalities. We could say that all Japanese are quiet and shy, but that's not true. Everyone is different :D
