  • Making your own acrylic paint may sound daunting, but it's surprisingly easy. You really only need two things: a base, and a pigment. These can both be bought fairly cheaply, and will make more paint than you could purchase for the same amount of money. Using an acrylic medium and mica powder, I'll show you how to mix a gorgeous satin acrylic paint.

    One of the things you can do is add a small nut to act like a ball in a paint can. this will lesson the time you use shaking the bottle as it will halp in the mixing of the material..

    Thank you for your advice on wearing a mask. You are one of the few mica powder artists who recommend doing so. Sure don't want to inhale this stuff.

    Gosh, I had assumed that one would need a very small amount of powder to colour the base. I now know why what I was doing wasn't working. I was dissolving the pigment in a little water and then adding it to a white base but it was hardly making a dent in the white. That's because I was obviously not using enough powder there. That's a bit disappointing because I thought the small packs of pigment I bought were going to last me some time. It seems they won't!

    I was warned to wear a good mask when using mica powder. I noticed you cleared your throat a few times. You don’t want to breathe mica powder because it stays indefinitely in your lungs. Just a suggestion. To anyone that uses these powders . They are dangerous without a mask

    I bought mica powder one time in error not pay attention thinking it was embossing powder. Now I have had it for awhile and found can mix in paint and such. Glad I found this video. I mainly make journals, but love all crafts. New subbie here, would love to be crafty UA-cam friends! Tfs

    Excellent demonstration. Just in time for me as I am just starting on a little project incorporating the use of mica. Question that I hope you’ll be able to answer; how stable is acrylic paint on top of mica? Thanks so much for sharing your experience and skills.

    I've been mixing cosmetic grade mica powder with white pearlescent (sp? sorry, not a native speaker) acrylic paint, but the texture gets very grainy with the powder to paint ratio needed to achieve the color; it tends to go on uneven, with tiny chunks, no matter how well I mix. I don't think we have acrylic gel in my country, at least not that I've seen. Any advice?

    • @starlapercle9575

      Just ask for it at a paint ir hardware store. Even the dollar stores carries it ,some Walmart as well.

      @@starlapercle9575 I'm not from the States, but regardless I ended up finding acrylic gel where I live. The graininess (sp) is still an issue for me, but the finer powders work well enough. Apparently particle size is way more important than I realized. Thanks

    Im confused. I'm looking for a cheaper way to replace small bottles of acrylic paint. This mixture seems to use quite a bit of powder for a very small amount of paint. The number one color I will need is white. Can one make white acrylic??? And how much a does the mica colors cost and what is the largest amount one can buy in each color?

    • @MadXStitcher
      @MadXStitcher  3 роки тому +2

      This is for acrylic paint. It wouldn't work in dye very well, because the mica powder itself won't stick to the fabric. The medium I used is an acrylic paint medium, which contains a type of glue that keeps the powder on the paper.
